Hello! My Great Uncle-William Matthew Cloonan was born in Ireland in 1870 along with 2 sisters but on the 1881 census they were living in Scotland. Edinburgh. Other sblings were born to the family in Scotland and then the only other information I have on William Matthew Cloonan is that he married in 1899 in Scotland and his first son was born that same year and died aged 2. At his wifes death in 1937 his recorded occupation is Governor of Queensberry House-Cannongate/Edinburgh. He seems to have disappeared off the planet and so did his Father a William Cloonan-who was recoded alive in 1879 registering a childs birth but was recorded deceased by the 1881 Scottish census on which his wife Helen was a widow. Is there any info/records I can find more info on him being governor/resident etc. Any help would be greatfully recieved.
-
Hi
I can't help directly on the whereabouts of the records for Queensberry House but in 1891 it was a House of Retreat which is a rather pleasant way of describing an old folks home.
My gt-gt-grandmother was listed as resident there along with many other elderly ladies. (Jane Morton, age 78, widow of a coachman; born in Edinburgh)
Since Edinburgh was the seat of all things administrative there is a good chance that all the records survive for Queensberry House. I believe it went through several incarnations in terms of function over the years. They may be in the National Archive.
Hope this helps

A potted history of Queensberry House is given on the Scottish Parliament website.

Hi - I just found this post - and I'm pretty sure we're related. My great-grandmother was a sister of the William Cloonan of Queensbury House - although we were told it was Queensbury Lodge, the Masonic Lodge in Edinburgh.
Happy to discuss if you want to email me direct.
cheers
-
Queensberry Lodge may well have been the lodge house of Queensberry House, with the lodge being the home of the governor and his family.
The 1890s OS map shows Queensberry House and its lodge house.

Thanks Monica,
I did see that but was hoping they had it set up to get a message when someone posted. I thought it was so cool to see a post from someone I'm related to.
Appreciate your help.

Hi All,
Found the following article on Queensberry Lodge,
LAYING OF THE FOUNDATION-STONE OF QUEENSBERRY LODGE
The Scotsman (1860-1920); Jul 18, 1865; ProQuest Historical Newspapers The Scotsman (1817-1950)
The foundation stone of this institution which is for the "safe accomodation and reformation of females in a respectable position in society addicted to habits of drunkenness" was yesterday laid by the Lord Provost.
LORD HIGH COMMISSIONER
The Scotsman (1921-1950); Jun 1, 1933; ProQuest Historical Newspapers The Scotsman (1817-1950)
pg. 8
Hovever in 1933 it was already "a supplementary nursing home for aged and infirm gentlemen."
So it has had many uses.

Hi Aussie Girl,
Just got home and checked my inbox and had notification about your message. I'm thrilled. I've been trying for the last 30 mins to send a reply. It's been 5 yrs at least since I've used a forum etc so I do hope you get this message. So if your line comes through William Cloonans sister then would that be through Mary Ann or Catherine and did more relatives go to Australia with Norah and Jonny marr as well as William. I've got Mary Ann Cloonan on 1901 census. Oh I won't go on. Can't wait to see how we are related.
Happy.
-
Hi joyous-57 - great to have you back ;D
Aussigirl will be thrilled I am sure!
Monica
-
Hi Aussigirl,
My connection is through William Matthew Cloonans sister, Janet Ellen Cloonan who married Thomas Hall
Kind Regards
-
OMIGOODNESS!!! I can't believe this. How exciting. My grandfather was Thomas Hall - Norah's brother. So I'm guessing that our connection is pretty close as from the sounds of it Janet and Thomas Hall were my grandfather's parents. Oh WOW!!!
Thomas (my grandfather) died several years ago and unfortunately none of his children are still alive - only his adopted son, who was from his marriage to Edith Mary Margaret Watson. He adopted Bob (Robert William) who was the child of Edith and her first husband who was a bigamist and had two sons of his own, Kenneth Duncan and Thomas Cloonan. I'm the illegitimate daughter of Tom's only daughter, his youngest child, Nancy Cloonan Hall who never married. He called his youngest son, Thomas Cloonan and Nancy was Nancy Cloonan, so I guess he wanted to keep that connection. I believe he came out here when he was 16, which would have been around 1918. From what I can gather their father was in the Queen's Guards or one of the army units, that was in India and that's why they were living with Uncle Willie.
I'd love to talk more about this. My email is (*). My second son is actually in Edinburgh at the moment. He's been there for two years now. Went on holidays for four months, then came back and got his youth visa. He's managing some bars for the University.
I'm SO glad you had that email alert set up. That's why I posted. I was hoping you would get the alert.
Please email me. I'd love to make contact.
cheers

Hello Aussigirl,
You are my Mother Dorothy Halls cousin so we are second cousins. Thomas's younger brother Robert Cloonan Hall is my Grandfather. A couple of years ago I got in touch with some of your relations in Australia but I have lost contact-my fault-been very very busy. Had letters from Bob and Jesse and Merlene and the Dimonds. I did not realize there were so many in Australia. My Aunty Catherine rang me last week to say that there had been a death-I think she said Bob. Merlene sent me all the family tree and I have you down in my private file-daughter of Nancy. I hear she died a year or two back. I'm sorry! I will e-mail you soon. Can't wait to get back from work and I'm sure between us we can talk the hind leg off a donkey
Later

Didn't know about Uncle Bob. I'll have to ring Auntie Jessie - I thought they might have rung me. Oh well. We haven't really been close cos Nancy (*) She died four years ago.
Look forward to catching up with you soon. Email me.

Just remembered. Some time ago - not long after Nancy died - I remember Merlene told me she'd been in contact with a Linda that was related. I remember I tried to find you on Facebook and google after she told me.

Sorry to the moderators - I didn't realise I'd put stuff in I should have.

Hi
Does anyone know in what year Queensberry House changed from being a "House of Refuge" to being a Geriatric Hospital? It was before 1949, but I'm not sure by how many years.

Hi Hibee,

Thanks, ADP. My grandfather died there in 1946, so that date comes as a relief.

Hello!
Message for Joyous57 and Aussiegirl. I live in Edinburgh and have came across some slides that contain images of your relatives William Matthew Cloonan and his sisters. There are some of his travels in Canada and America with his wife and on board the SS Sythia. I would guess they are around 1929-mid 1930s.
I did some research and then also came across this post.
Just thought you would be interested :)
Thanks
-
Hoping Joyous57 and Aussiegirl can read my post from before.
I have some slides that contain images of William Matthew Cloonan and his sisters- sitting on a sunny porch (in Canada maybe?) My husband bought a box of slides in a charity shop and my research brought me to your posts. Would love to share them with you.

Does anyone know if there are any records available .I am trying to confirm the death of my great aunt there in 1939. I see it was a house of refuge then. Thanks

The death certificate (from Scotlandspeople) should tell you whether she died there.
-
Thanks for reply, I have a death certificate, but it is not clear that it is her. She belonged to Caithness. But the certificate shows no family information. I can't find any other certificate with same name .
-
Did the person who died in 1939 leave a will? That might give clues.

Hi, I have an elderly friend here in Australia.
She was born in Edinburgh 1926 , She dearly wants to find her relatives , Ian & Patrick McLaren ( also from Edinbrugh)
William Matthew Cloonan was her Grandfather. She fondly remember him & tells me stories of the royal mile & Holyrood house/ Palace. She had 1 sibling, a brother billy i think.
She joined the navy young, was injured in malta during the war, leaving her profoundly deaf.
She married a scotsman(1949 Service Returns) & had 2 children.
She, her hubby & her parents all came to Australia many yrs ago..& her grandfather too...i think
Aussiegirl may be interested as well as Joyous57.
Any help would be appreciated as time is of the essence.
I would dearly love to give her some news.
Edited , living person.

We are not allowed to post in the RootsChat forum anything about anyone who is, or may be, still living, so I need to be a bit careful trying to answer this.
I see that William Matthew Cloonan's wife was Elizabeth McLaren, and that as someone said upthread they were married in 1899 and she died in 1937, aged 62. So she would have been born in 1874/1875. What were the names of her parents?
I cannot find the marriage of a Mr Marr to a Miss Cloonan, however. To find that you would need to see your friend's own birth certificate, which will tell you the date and place of her parents' marriage. As it's less than 100 years ago, you cannot view that certificate online.
the 1911 census lists William Cloonan, 40, and Elizabeth Cloonan, 35, in Canongate, but it lists no children with them. In 1901 there are William Cloonan, 30; Elizabeth Cloonan, 25; Mary A Cloonan, 24; and William Cloonan, 2. This is presumably the William Matthew Cloonan who was born in Newington in 1899 and died in Canongate in 1901 aged 3. There are no other Cloonan births in Edinburgh, so I am at a loss to know who your friend's mother was.
-
Thank you
I will see my friend tomorrow and i will as for more detail.
I really appreciate your reply & I had best familiarize myself with the rules 😕😮

Reverse timeline. Births, marriage and deaths are from the index at Scotland's People.
1911 Census index: William Cloonan, 40 and Elizabeth Cloonan, 35, in Edinburgh Canongate.
1909: Alexander Bowden McLaren marries Margaret Meikle McIntyre in Edinburgh St Giles.
1901: William Matthew Cloonan, 3, dies in Edinburgh Canongate.
1901 Census transcription: William Cloonan, 30, railway porter, born Ireland; Elizabeth Cloonan, 35, born Canongate; William Cloonan, 2, born Newington; Mary A Cloonan, 24, born Canongate, at 14 Canongate, Edinburgh.
1899: William Matthew Cloonan marries Elizabeth McLaren in Edinburgh Canongate; William Matthew Cloonan born in Edinburgh Newington.
1891 Census transcription: Alexander Bowden, baker, aged 72; grandchildren Elizabeth McLaren, 16; Margaret McLaren, 11; Alexander McLaren, 9; William McLaren, 6; all born in Edinburgh, living at Calton Hill, South Leith.
1887: Elizabeth Bowden or MacLaren dies in Edinburgh St Andrew aged 43.
1884: William McLaren born in South Leith.
1881: Alexander Bowden McLaren born in Edinburgh St Andrew.
1879: Margaret Bowden McLaren born in Edinburgh St Andrew.
1875: Elizabeth McLaren born in Edinburgh Canongate.
1874: William McLaren and Elizabeth Bowden married in Edinburgh Canongate.
1871 Census transcription: Alexander Bowden, baker, 52; Elizabeth Bowden, wife, 52; Elizabeth Bowden, daughter, 24; Margaret Boyd Bowden, daughter, 20, at Fleshmarket Close, Edinburgh St Giles.
27 August 1870: William Mathew Cloonan, son of William Cloonan and Helen Docherty, born at Macroom, County Cork, Ireland.
1861 Census: Alexander Bowden, 42, born South Leith; Elizabeth Christina Bowden, wife, 42, born South Leith; Elizabeth Bowden, daughter, 15; Margaret Bowden, daughter, 11; William Alexander Bowden, son, 8; at High School Yards, Edinburgh Canongate.
See what you make of this. Without looking at the original certificates I don't guarantee that every listing is relevant, but it does all hang together and suggests that either Alexander or William McLaren must have been the father of Ian and Patrick McLaren.
-
Wow 😮 im impressed. You are very knowledgeable in thelis field. Its hard piecing together the bits that an elderly lady can remember.
This is my friend's grandfather as i remember she said thats where he was born...
27 August 1870: William Mathew Cloonan, son of William Cloonan and Helen Docherty, born at Macroom, County Cork, Ireland.
Im excited to talk to her tomorrow 😀
Thank you so much
-
A few more bits for the timeline (This time in normal order)
1864: William Cloonan and Helen Dorchty or Doucherty married in Edinburgh St George.
10 January 1867: Catherine Jane Cloonan born in Down Street, Macroom. (Her father William Cloonan is described as Trumpeter, West Cork Artillery Militia so it might be worth looking for army service records.)
1873: Rachel Margaret Cloonan born in Dalkeith.
1877: Mary Ann Cloonan born in Edinburgh Canongate.
1878: Robert Cloonan born in Edinburgh Canongate.
1881 Census transcription: Helen Cloonan, widow, 35, born Elphinstone, East Lothian; daughters Janet E, 11, born Ireland; Rachel C, 7, born Dalkeith; Mary Anne, 4, born Edinburgh; son Robert 2, born Edinburgh, at High Street East, Dalkeith.
1881 Census: Wm Matthew Cloonan, 10, scholar, born Ireland, is in the Royal Military Asylum, Chelsea, London. (Again, this points to a military connection.)
1884: Margaret Meikle McIntyre born in Edinburgh Newington.
1900: Helen Docherty or Cloonan dies in Edinburgh Newington aged 54.
1913: James Henry and Margaret B McLaren married in Edinburgh St Andrew.
1935: Margaret Meikle McIntyre or McLaren dies in Edinburgh Canongate aged 51.
26 May 1939: William Cloonan, Canongate, Edinburgh, governor, aged 68, departs aboard 'Caledonia' bound for New York, but intending to return to Scotland.
26 September 1940: William Matthew Clooman, 70, retired governor of institution, born Ireland, residence Scotland, arrived at Vancouver from Auckland aboad the SS 'Awata' en route to the USA via Vermont (I think - it's not always clear what is going on!).
4 April 1948: William Matthew Cloonan dies aged 77 at Woodville, South Australia and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery, Cheltenham, Adelaide, South Australia.
5 April 1948: On April 4, at Adelaide, William Matthew Cloonan, of 97 David Terrace, Woodville Park, late of Edinburgh, Scotland, dearly loved uncle of Nora (Mrs Marr), Thomas Hall and Katherine (Mrs Dimond, of Perth). Aged 77 years. [Notice in Adelaide Advertiser] NB this sheds new light on the connection because if William Matthew Cloonan was the uncle of Norah Marr, he must be your friend's great-uncle, not her grandfather.
1959: Alexander Bowden McLaren dies in Edinburgh Canongate and Portobello aged 77.
1960: Margaret Bowden McLaren or Henry dies in Lasswade aged 80.
I wish they'd given William McLaren b 1884 a middle name!
-
1926: John Marr and Norah Ellen Hall married in Edinburgh Canongate.
No wonder I couldn't find a marriage of Mr Marr and Miss Cloonan - she was Miss Hall!

"EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS" dated Saturday, 25th Nov. 1939, (Page 3), has a lengthy article about William M, Cloonan, when he retired as Governor of Roseberry House. (Good photograph on same page.) Referred to as a "Cameraman and Philatelist" article says William was born 1870 in Ireland. Travelled to Dalkeith (Midlothian, Scotland) age 11 days. Joined Army age 14yrs. Served about 13 years in the Army, including in India where he was "Lord Robert's bugler at the great Durbar at Delhi in 1885". Time in India fostered a love of travel and he later visited Europe, Canada and America. Combined with a keen interest in photography and cine film, he gave travel lectures for "charitable purposes". Another hobby was stamp collecting and he was the first President of the Edinburgh Philatelist Society. William was a Clerk and Cashier at Roseberry House for 19 years before he was appointed Governor, a position he held for 14 years until his retirement age 69. William hoped to travel to Australia, where his nephew was an M.P., "as soon as the international situation will permit". (Start of WW2). A widower of 2yrs. his regret was that his wife, who always accompanied him on on holiday travels, would not be with him.

Couldn't find Cloonan family on 1871 Scotland Census although William (Snr) and his wife Helen Docherty had a son Charles John Cloonan born 13th Oct. 1871, died 1871 at Dalkeith, Midlothian.
Couldn't find William Cloonan (Snr) or William (Jnr) on 1881 Scotland Census but this looks like the rest of the family at High Street, Dalkeith.

Janet Ellen Cloonan, age 18, married Thomas Hall, age 24, on 9th April 1888 at Aldgate, London. Janet's father is William Cloonan (deceased). Band Sergeant?, 74th Highlanders.
This Notice in the "Edinburgh Evening News" dated Thursday, 29th June 1905, looks like the above Robert. "Cloonan.- In Memory of my dear brother, R.K. CLOONAN, 2nd H.L.I., who died at St Peter's, Jersey, 29th June 1904. Inserted by his youngest sister, M. Cloonan."

1920: Janet E Hall, 49, died in Basford.

I found William Cloonan's and William Matthew Cloonan's army service records.
William Cloonan served with the 94th from 23 July 1846 to 26 June 1848 'under age'. So it looks as if he turned 18 in 1848, therefore he was born in 1830. He was transferred to the 74th, and discharged to the West Cork Militia at Macroom on 27 August 1869. It also says that he was born at Sheerness in Kent and attested at Aden on 23 July 1846 aged 16 years and 26 days.
William Matthew Cloonan joined the Highland Light Infantry at 14 years of age, and the interesting detail is that he gave as his next of kin Lillian Simpson, Wardhams Close, Dalkeith.
-
I thought Helen may be widowed, especially since she was working. According to daughter Janet's Marriage Entry, William (Snr) served with the 74th Highlanders, so maybe he died abroad.
Helen Docherty / Cloonan married Robert Simpson, 1882 at Canongate, Edinburgh. Don't know what happened to Robert but on 1891 Scotland Census, Helen Simpson (transcribed as Smipon on A**try) is in South Leith, age 45, with daughters Rachel M Cloonan, age 18 and Mary A Cloonan, age 15.
Helen Docherty / Cloonan / Simpson died 1900 at Newington, Edinburgh aged 54yrs.
Regards, Dod.
Sorry, this is going to cross with another post.
-
I thought Helen may be widowed
Which transcription did you use that didn't tell you that rather important detail that was in the original?
According to daughter Janet's Marriage Entry, William (Snr) served with the 74th Highlanders, so maybe he died abroad.
I didn't see his death date and place in his army service papers. I'll have another look.
1895 Rachel Margaret Cloonan and Daniel Graham married in Edinburgh Canongate.
1914 Rachel Cloonan or Graham died in Scotstoun and Yoker.
-
A***try doesn't say whether married, single or widowed. Wish they would, but maybe just as well, really. Transcriptions are not the best!
Regards, Dod.
-
A***try doesn't say whether married, single or widowed. Wish they would, but maybe just as well, really. Transcriptions are not the best!
No, indeed. Ancestry misses out these important details, and it adds a supposed year of birth which isn't in the original document. FindMyPast also adds the supposed YoB and often leaves out the birthplace, but at least it includes the relationship to the head of the family. FreeCEN puts the surname first, which the originals don't, but at least it includes relationships and birthplaces. The LDS 1881 transcription omits all the information on the headers of the page so places like Airdrie, Coatbridge, Motherwell and Wishaw are not included in the transcriptions. There's no substitute for viewing the originals.
-

I've checked it again and it definitely says Lillian, so I suppose 'Lillian' must be a clerical error for 'Helen'.
-
Got it! (I think). Death of William Coonan, aged 49, in Edinburgh St Giles in 1879.
-
That sounds a likely death. Did a bit more fishing around too.
1901 Scotland Census. This appears to be William Mathew Cloonan and family at Canongate,
Edinburgh. (Surname transcribed as Cloman on An***try.)
William Cloonan 30 Head b Ireland.

"Cloonan. At Leven, suddenly, on 6th August, Elizabeth (Bessie) McLaren, beloved wife of
W.M. Cloonan, governor, Queensberry House. Funeral Tuesday to Piershill Cemetery."
A short report in the "Dundee Evening Telegraph" dated Tuesday, 10th Aug. 1937, says

I assume from the address on the Memoriam inserted by by William, that he lived in
Queensberry Lodge while governor of Queensberry House.

Just for the record, and to save anyone delving further, I have found the people Scottyaussie63 was looking for and put them in touch.
I have also put together a tree based on the contents of this thread which I am happy to share with any descendants.
