Title: JOHN NIGHTINGALE 1841 TENDRING
Post by: dorbrin on Sunday 22 January 06 21:48 GMT (UK)
Hi

I wonder if someone can help me with a look up please. I have a JOHN NIGHTINGALE who is on the 1841 Essex Census HO107/338/29. Can anyone tell me the address of where he was living at that time, would it be West Street? I am trying to connect him to my Nightingale/Oxley family who lived in West Street Harwich on later censuses.

Many thanks

Dorothy

No, Weeley is village, roughly central to Tendring district.

and enter Weeley in the "find" box,  top left.

I have found Harwich.

It is under Dovercourt and also St Nicholas.

Found West Street  -  but it will take a while to search.

The ref is HO107 344_19

Thx CP

So do you think West Street Harwich and West Street Weeley are one and the same on the 1841?

Much appreciated

No.

I searched Borough of Harwich, Parish of St Nicholas

HO107 344_19  and  344_20 (except military)

This includes West Street and surrounding area.

No Nightingale or Oxley found.

What do you know, and what would you like to know?

Hi CP

Many thanks again.

It is a longstanding mystery.  My Esther Storry Nightingale married Robert Oxley in Harwich in 1846. They were both born in Whitby. It is Esther's father John Nightingale I am trying to find??  Have been for many, many years. He married in Whitby in 1807 and he was a sailor that is all I know about him. He wasn't born in Whitby.  Esther was in Whitby on the 1841 census then she and Robert moved to Harwich and married, Robert Oxley was also a sailor, so maybe they moved to Harwich to be with his ship I don't know. I know what happened to the Oxley's and I have found all their children.
When I saw John Nightingale living on West Street I thought it was too much of a coincidence, as I know Esther and her family lived for a long time at 21 West Street, Harwich, that is why I wondered if the West Street John was living on was the same. I know he was a schoolteacher on the census, but he could have become that in later life after he finished at sea. I think he was Royal Navy, but that is it.

Many thanks for your time

Dorothy

Just some quick thoughts:

IGI Extracted Record   Baptism   Batch C007742

Esther Storry Nightingale
26 Nov 1822, Whitby, Yorkshire
Parents: John & Mary Nightingale

Same batch, same parents:

Mary Ann Nightingale
7 Feb 1822, Whitby, Yorkshire

Other children, same batch:

Parents: John & Elizabeth Nightingale

John, 1836
Benjamin, 1838
Maria Carling Nightingale, 1841
Adam, 1844
William, 1844

I wondered if it was the same John Nightingale;
Mary died and he married Elizabeth?
Possible for both marriages are on IGI.

Benjamin, Maria and William are with grandparents in 1851.

Assume you know all this, but I have to mention it.

Hi CP

Many thanks for this.  I have all those. Unfortunately I think the John Nightingale who married Maria Carling was born 1809 the son of William Nightingale of Whitby. It is a possibility that William was John's brother as he wasn't born in Whitby, there is also an Anne and a Thomas, all,  including my John married in Whitby within a few years of each other.

Many thanks for trying

Hi, not an answer to your question as the info i am about to share goes up in time (after 1885), but perhaps the files deliver some new addresses/locations, i've read the address you mentioned but if i'm remembering correct there were others too.

In Antwerp exist old alienfiles of a few Oxley's from Harwich:

File N° 481#43099
OXLEY Thomas °21 feb 1858 Harwich
Clerk

His parents:
Robert °in 1822 Whitby
Esther Storry NIGHTINGALE °in 1822 Whitby

Previous address abroad: Harwich, West Street N°21

Arrivaldate in Antwerp,Belgium 3 Jan 1880. He carried as proof of his ID a birthcertificate, delivered in Harwich 6 march 1880.
Filedate 24 mar 1880
____________
His wife:
Sarah-Anne LAWRENCE
°15 apr 1858 London
Housewife

Her parents:
Francis Adolph  °in 1822 London
Mary-Anne LEWIS °Harwich (died before arrival/filedate (Feb 1883))

Previous address abroad: Harwich, Macdonough Terace, Maritime House

Arrivaldate in Antwerp,Belgium 2 Nov 1882. She carried as proof of her ID a marriagerecord, delivered in Harwich.
Filedate 27 Feb 1883

Sadly no more info than this.
But there are others mentioned in the database, like a child from above mentioned people:

File: 481#119637: Oxley Thomas Victor 27/04/1885 Harwich (parents Thomas& Sarah Lawrence -both stayed in Gent,Belgium)

and a few more:
