I have been trying without success to find a marriage for Jabez Ernest Webb and Rosanna Smith. I found them on the 1891 Census living at 23 Victoria Street Greets Green West Bromwich, he aged 30, she was 21. Can anyone please give me a clue where to find a marriage. I know Rosanna's maiden name was smith because of their daughters' birth certificates. Any help much appreciated.

WELCOME TO ROOTSCHAT
What was the birth year of their first child?
Tricia
-
Florence Edith Webb was born 1894. West Bromwich.
-
Oh, dear - not a lot of help. They were already married (presumably) by 1891.
Were have you checked for this marriage?
Tricia :(
-
I have checked the civil reg.lists from 1886 - 1895 for the marriage of a Jabez Webb anywhere in England and Wales without success.
Problems -
Jabez may not be his birth name
They may not have married
They may not have registered the marriage
Roseanna Smith is too common a name to search under without finding a matching Jabez.
They may have married years after the children were born.
Do you have a birth cert confirming his 1st name
I will leave it there until I hear from you

Do you have a birth cert confirming his 1st name

Thank you for your efforts. I have looked on freeBMD and Ancestry. I have sent for two birth certificates because there were 2 children born 1869/70 in west brom area called Jabez Webb, but I was hoping that the marriage certificate would identify which one is mine via his father's name. His daughters' birth certificates and Florence's marriage certificate all have him as Jabez Ernest Webb.
I suppose I may have to accept that they might not have got married afterall. They were down as married on the 1981 census tho' and the girls' birth certificates give mothers name as Rosanna Webb, formerly Smith.
-
They may have married but not registered it. Maybe Jabez was entered incorrectly. I had an acestor called Edward Charlesworth. No sign of his marriage. Eventually found it - he had been recorded as Charles Worth.
So, who knows.
Sorry I haven't been able to help,

Jabez and Rosanna Webb were my husbands great grandparents.jabez Ernest Webb is his correct name. I have been looking up the family tree and saw your post. His father was Titus Webb born in 1823 and his Father was Eli Webb born in 1806. Rosanna was born in Oakengate Shropshire and although the census gives them as married in 1894. I too cannot find a marriage certificate. His sister Florence Edith was born in 1895, Gertrude in 1897, Ethel 1903, John Ernest, my Husbands grandfather in 1906, and Arthur in 1910. I presume your connection is with Florence. I should be delighted if you can let me know any more information from your side. Thanks outlaws
-
Hello. You are right in your supposition outlaws, my connection is with Florence Edith, who was my grandmother. She married my grandfather William Thornborough in 1919. She died, sadly, about 6months after the birth of her second child, my aunt Florence Jean, known as Jean. Her first child was my father Charles William. I heard from another family member, actually one of G ertrude's daughters, that there was a brother who she remembered visiting them in a guardsman'is uniform. As a child, she remembered particularly his bearskin helmet 😊. Would this be your husband's grandfather?
-
Thanks for replying. John Ernest was Jebez 1st son & he is my husbands grandfather. We thought he was in the guards but can find no record of his service. He married twice. His 2nd wife being Anne Hoskins. My husbands grandmother. We cannot trace him from leaving Aston to marrying his first wife in the Guildford area. He later lived in Croydon & worked as a doorman at Olympia. It would be lovely to hear any more information you have of any members of the family. Thanks.

Hello Trish
It was lovely and unexpected to hear from you via Rootchat
My name is Heather Wright, Jabez is my Husband Stephen Wright 's great grandfather. We live in Sussex, but at present our down in our place in Spain.
I am trying to trace
John Ernest Webb. Born 1906 (West Brom) (my Mother in laws Father)
Parents Jabez Ernest Webb and Rosanna Webb ( nee Smith). I cannot find a marriage certificate for them, but have found that Rosanna was born in Oakengates Shropshire in 1871 and died in 1929
Siblings
Florence Edith. 1895
Gertrude 1899
Ethel. 1903
Arthur Henry 1910
1911 Census
Living at 3 Back, 13Union Road, Aston. Aged 5 with his parents.
As there are no further census available I cannot trace him from then until he married when he was 22 in 1928 to his first wife Amelia Bertha Corbett. Born 1892 (Marylebone)
He had a son John Webb born 1929/ died 1929 at 2 months
Daughter Muriel Daisy Webb born 1931. Both at Guildford Surrey
John Ernest Webb had another Daughter in 1931 also, June Mary (my Mother in law) born to Anne Hoskins, also in Guildford and a son Robert John 1934 ( now deceased)
He must have divorced Amelia as I have a marriage certificate for August 1939 for him marrying Anne Hoskins in Croydon (Surrey)
In the 1939 war census he was listed as being a doorman at Olympia and him and Anne were living at 2 Enmore Ave, Croydon, in a house owned by Adam Packham. At this time he was listed only as Ernest Webb, but was known as Bob?
Both June & Robert were registered as Webb, and June who is now 84 has memories of her Father telling her he was in the Guards & injured in Turkey ( but I can find no military records for him). She tells me he was always very secretive of his young life and she new nothing of his siblings or her grandparents, only their names Jabez & Rosanna.
I have told her everything I have found regarding Jabez's background, but I would love to be able to tell her more regarding her Father. She has always felt there must be a Jewish connection to the family with so many Hebrew names, however the census all records C of E.
The family name of Jabez is being continued as one of Roberts son's is called Nathan Jabez.
Thank you so much for the information, how strange that just by googling the name Jabez Ernest Webb that I found you. I have also been contacted by Jean Charles who we think is my Husband's 2nd Cousin, she also had some great information. What relation are you I wonder, and what side of the family is your link?
Many thanks, Heather Wright
