??? Does anyone out there have any idea how to find a relative that joined in the Klondike Gold Rush? I just found out that my g-g-g grandfather came over to Canada twice to join the gold rush. I've searched the Yukon Genealogy website but it is mostly bmd. He was born in England and died in Wales.
Is there a website that lists passengers to the gold rush? I know the NWMP had a customs stop at the top of the Chilkoot Pass - is there a list of those entering Canada?
Any ideas on how to proceed would be great!
Thanks!

Don't know about Canada but here in Oz several systems of licences and permits have been tried untill the present system of a miners right came about. If it was so over there, then the dept of mines or someone should have records----------------just a thought.

Hi there,
Here's a link to the Klondike National Park, perhaps they have some sort of records.

What was his name and do you know what years?

Did you try this part of the site, the
Yukon Gold Rush Pan for gold database?
http://www.yukongenealogy.com/content/database_search.htm
Just use the surname only, as the whole name may not be listed...

There is so much about this subject on the net that you may be busy for a long time.
What is our miners right here, is called a free miners certificate in Canada and is controled I believe by the mining titles office, but in the early days would probably come under the juristiction of the gold commissioner and government agent
Probably the most interesting site with plenty of info, (possibly in your ancesters case he/she would have been what was called an overlander) is the following

Thanks for all the help so far. I've been on the Yukon Genealogy website and found a few listings for an H. Herbert in the "Placer Mining Certificates". Now all I need to do is track down the years he was there and narrow the search down.
I do know he married in 1887 and the rush did not really start until 1897. He is on the 1901 Wales census, so I have narrowed it down to those years in between as the most likely time for at least one of the trips to the Klondike.

Re: Yukon Genealogy
HERBERT, H. JUL 26, 1902 Northwest Hotel. Seattle, WA
HERBERT, H.G. OCT 09, 1908 Edmonton, AB
Did you see these on the list of men leaving the Yukon ? It would give their present address. When using the database, don't forget to scroll down as it
gives you other instances for that surname...
There are a few H. Herbert listings on this shiplists site but you didn't give a first name or age...so check it out for yourself!

J.J. after your last post I went back though everything else I had posted and realized that you are absolutely correct, I never did say who I was looking for.
My g-g-g grandfather is Henry Herbert, b. 1863 in Bristol, England.
After looking at the Yukon Genealogy I have a suspicion that he is the H. Herbert who left in 1902. What I need to do now is find when he arrived in N. Anmerica. The Nanaimo FHS only has lists for 1908 & 1909. I believe I need to find lists for before then, around 1900. Any suggestions?

scroll up...and under Emigrants to canada....you'll see a sub board "Canada Resources"
Ships list resources are listed under Research in Canada....check each reply as there's more than one on the thread... ( we are going to organize that one of these days...) Those are the available online resources that we know of.... J.J.

Sorry, also as per above:
Quebec & N.S.Canada Ports and other ships lists has more listings, some are duplicated...

Here is the census of 1901 for the Yukon, but lists names only, no ages or
other information...

Thanks for the link J.J. but I have found my Henry Herbert in the 1901 Wales census. This is what is making finding him so difficult. I can find him on the 1891 and 1901 UK census, so I'm trying other avenues to find him. I've tried passenger lists on the link you sent previously and through Yukon Genealogy.
I have found a couple of H. Herbert's through Yukon Genealogy so now I'm trying to confirm those listings through placer mining certificates etc. I've also sent out "feeler" letters to some Herberts in Wales that I believe are related. Hopefully they are and will have more info for me.

One might fit the bill on the Ellice island site
