I believe there was a band at Moor Row founded in the mid 1800's. Does anyone have any information which would confirm this.
A photograph of the Penrith Band in a recent post showed the bandsmen wearing a military style uniform, was this usual?

Many thanks for the link, which I have searched but have been unable to find anything connecting with Moor Row.
I have been helping a friend with her Gill family. Her Grandfather Robert Gill, who emigrated to NZ in 1879, had connections with a band in or near Moor Row. It is possible the band wore uniforms like the Grenadiers.

I was a teacher at Moor Row(now retired) and I know that I have a photo of moor row band in my local history archives. The players are all named. They had no uniforms as such. Will go and find it in the next week or two if you are still interested.

What a surprise to receive your reply after all this time and yes, I am sure my friend Betty Gill, will be thrilled to see the photograph. Her grandfather was Robert Gill born in 1854 in Cumberland and believed to be a founder member of the Moor Road Band. Brass bands remained a life long interest for him.

I will get the photo, probably next week. My grandfather James Crosthwaite, a butcher and farmer, was a friend of a Robert Gill who was a farmer at Arlecdon. I knew an Ann Gill who was married to my first boss- joe Gate, a headteacher. Perhaps another link. will be in touch

Hi Alison.Just wondered if you would know if the Joe Gate you mention was the same one who taught at St James junior school Whitehaven in the late 1950s.I remember him as a smashing teacher, a tall man (with a moustache I think) Would love to know what happened to him.Coincidentally, there was a J Gill in my class, we were friends and I think she lived on Inkerman Terrace.

I started off as a new teacher with him at Jericho Primary in the early 70's. He was quite a character - loved drama etc. He was an excellent head.
I was at his retirement 'do'. He moved to be near his daughter Susan. I think Stockport but is still hale and hearty and does come back to Whitehaven on visits. Still has the moustache!

Hi again ,good to hear that.I've just seen on another of your posts that you are researching the Gunns of Distington.I grew up at Commonend Distington and there was a family of Gunns (2 or 3 sisters as far as I can remember) who ran a little sweet shop from their house .We used to spend our pocketmoney there.One of the sisters was called Abbey.Wonder if they'd be any relation.

My partner is Bill Gunn, son of William and nephew of Abbie , Maggie etc. A relation still lives in the same house. Bill went to Distington School. He lived on Main St and then Harrington.

Isn't it a small world! I don't remember your Bill or his dad unfortunately.We moved from Distington(Hinnings rd) to Whitehaven in 1955 then back again to Swallow hill Commonend in 1959.I went to infant school in Distington, then to St James juniors.My friend lived on Commonend and Swallow hill until she married and would know Bill's family better than I did.
