Hi

There is a record in the 1851 census for a John and Lavinia Read.  John is 24 and born in Woodlands, Dorset with occupation listed as Lawyer/Sawyer??

His wife Lavinia is 22 born in what looks to be  Gupage, Strickland.

They have two children, a son Richard John aged 4 born in Woodlands and a daughter Elizabeth age 2 also born in Woodlands.

Hi

Here's some more on the Read family:

1861 Census:

same details except the following children are listed, all of them born in Woodlands:

Elizabeth age 12
Ann R age 10
Stephen age 8
Emma age 4
Martin age 1

Reference RG 9/1336

Ancestry has lavinia mistranscribed as "Tonia Read"
John's occupation looks more like Sawyer

1871 census

address is 53 Woodlands.

The following children are listed, again all born in Woodlands:

Emma 13
Martin 11
Silas 9
Edith L.  7
Job 4
George 3
Ellen 6 months

Reference:  RG 10/1982

1881 Census

John 53; Lavinia 52

Children at home:
Edith L 19 Servant unemployed
Job 14 agricultural labourer
George 12 Scholar
Ellen 10 Scholar
Julia 8 Scholar born Woodlands

address  is 33 Whitmore

Next door is also a Read family as follows:

address 34 Whitmore
John Read 34 born Horton;  occupation is given as Sawyer
Elizabeth 36 born Cranborne, Dorset
James 9 born Haythorne, Dorset
William 6 Haythorne, Dorset
Robert 3 Woodlands
Thurza 1 Woodlands

Reference RG 11/2091

1891 census

Lavinia is living alone at 33 Whitmore and is listed as widow with a monthly income.

Reference RG 12/1635

Had a quick look, seems George married Fanny  born 1868 in Bridgport, they have children;
Martin married an Elizabeth from Poole, they also have children

If you would like lookups for John and Lavinias children, let me know.

This could possibly be John's death record:

John Read
Age 60 died December Quarter 1887; District of Wimborne; County Dorset Hampshire; Volume 5a; Page 161

1901 Census

There is a Lavinia Read living at 6 St Osmunds Cottages, Parkstone; listed as widow age 73 living on own means..has birth listed as Sutton, Dorset.

She is living with her single daughter Julia Read age 28 born Woodlands, Dorset.  Julia's occupation is listed as washer woman.  Note in margin states ''own account"

Reference RG 13/1981

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  Im after more info about John and Lavinias daughter Elizabeth if you can help, she's my g-g-g-grandmother and settled in Timaru NZ with her first (horrible) husband.  She had a rough life in NZ with that man but went on to marry again.
Thanks again

Hi Cazza59,
just found this site. Are you related in any way to the Read family or are you a very helpful researcher ? I think that I have been in contact with "Choc" via another site. Just wondering in case there is another connection.

Hi Choc,
it wasn't so much that I helped you , if you are the lady from NZ, then you gave me some very good info on the Read family from Dorset. I am related through George Read and Fanny Moore who are my great grandparents on my grandmother Olive ( Winifred ) Read's side. The site was Genes Reunited and private e-mails. Have I assumed your ID correctly  or have I stumbled on yet another link ?

Hi Dave
Yep, that must have been me. Im related to the Reads through my gggreat grandmother that came out to NZ late 1880s.  Found out some more info but must look through my records and will let you know if Ive got more on the Reads, I found a relly in Christchurch (round the corner from me) that has traced the BEST side back to the 1600's and I think shes given me more on the READS.  Will let you know.

Hello, I am also researching the Reads from Dorset and have just read all the messages contained on this board. John Read appears to be the main Read discussed. I was wondering if you/anyone knows if he came from a large family. At the head of my Read research is George Read born 1780c married to Jane Bailey at Cranborne Parish Church 1805. They had nine children seven of them boys. Their birthplace is Verwood which I know is not far from Cranborne and Woodlands where the other Read families seem to be. I only have one sibling - William - no parents, for George Read 1780 but have had conflicting information from other Read researchers on Genes and Ancestry, One lady has the wrong branch completely. My information comes from the Parish records and Census records. Perhaps someone can tell me whether my George Read 1780 is linked to any other Read families and whether he has any more siblings. It doesn't help matters when they all use the same christian name. Grateful thanks to anyone that can help. LadyTodd

Hi Ladytodd,
I have an interest in a Mahala Beart who married a David Read on 20 December 1833 in Long Bredy. Would this be included in your research?
There still are Reads in that area for a maker of homemade jams & marmelade who sells them at the Wednesday Dorchester market is a Read. Unfortunately no relation to mine.
Cheers, Toby.

Hi Toby. Thanks for reply. I do not have any David Read's in my line - not that I can find anyway. Its very frustrating when I can see people discussing another line and they have loads of info and I am struggling - yet they all come from the same area, they must be linked somehow!  ??? Dorchester market is a long way from me so there is no prospect of me popping along to see if this person is related to me. Thanks for your interest Ladytodd

Hi, new to the site, seeking some help with George and Elizabeth (Coward)  Read, the Reads came from Gillingham Dorset, sailed to Swan River colony in Australia Jan 1830. on the "Rockingham"
From there, I have a lot of info, but am now seeking info on George Reads parents, John and Elizabeth Read.
I will be visiting Gillingham next year and would love to meet some of the Reads.
Cheers, the ferret

Hi Ferret, I don't think we have the same Read family though I'm sure there is some connection somewhere. My George Read married Jane Bailey and his parents were John & Elizabeth Read who married in Cranborne. I don't have any information that will be of use to you. Your best bet is to go to the site that nanny jan has mentioned which I'm sure will be quite helpful to you. Good luck in your research. Ladyt  :)

Thank you for your quick replies, I have been to the OPCdorset site, but to not much avail lol
Yes, there is bound to be a connection somewhere, the Reads were a big family, probably why it's so hard to pin them down.
From their landing here in Australia, I have just about everything I need, now it's time to go back and being the GGG Grandson who is getting on a bit, would like to finish the tree.
Cheers again for taking the time to reply.
Regards, the ferret.
