Title: The SAINT family of Dudley - is this familiar to anyone out there?
Post by: HistorySeeker on Tuesday 17 January 06 15:28 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I have a Sarah SAINT in my family, born in the Dudley area around 1805 or so.  She marries John Price and they live in Oldbury.

Does anyone know the names of Sarah's relatives or is anyone themselves researching the name SAINT? I'd love to hear from you, if so.

Regards
Helen

Hi Helen

I don't think we have any connection. My surname is Saint and our family come from the Kent region and go back to the French Hugeonots

Hi,
I have just been browsing through the Family trees on another site. Found Sarah Saint, b.1812, in Ripley, Yorks, d. 31.8.1889 in Pontypool workhouse. Cause of death - Senile Decay. She married John Price, b. 1803 Dudley, d. 31.8.1859 at Llanhilleth, Wales. They were married 18.5.1834 at Walsall, Staffs.
Parents of Sarah were James Saint,b. 25.7.1777 at Penrich, Ripley, d. March 1857 at Ashbourne.
James's parents were William Saint, b. 1741, married to Mary Riley, b. 1745
Hope these match your research. Let me know if I can be of help.

HI RobPhill,

Since I posted here I've found out a lot about Sarah Saint, including that her possible parents were James Saint and Mary Shaw, but I was unable to confirm this.

I have siblings called James (1804), William (1802), Sylvia (1809) and Hannah (1806).

Thanks so much for confirming this for me, it has made my day!  :)

I also find interesting that Sarah's grandmother was called Mary Riley, as Riley is my own married name.  :)

If I have the right 1851 Census John is born c 1803, Dudley and Sarah c 1809 Dudley.
Children;
Joseph Price, 13
Samuel Price, 10
Thomas Price, 7
Ebenezer Price, 4
Edward Price, 1

1841 in Dudley we have;
John PRICE, 30, Coal Miner
Sarah, 28, Nailor
Joseph, 3
Samuel, 1

I agree that they are in Wales in 1861 and Sarah is Widowed but she says she is born c 1816 Dudley, Staffs. Son Ebenezer is with her and Samuel and Family is living nearby.

1871 she is born c 1815 Wednesbury, Staffordshire and is still living in Llanhilleth (under Prigg)
A James Saint born c 1848 Staffs is a Boarder.

If I have the right Family no time does Sarah say she is born Yorks/Derby ???

Trish :)

Hi, Helen,
Only pleased to be able to help. I also found the Price children from their union. If you are interested, I will try to find them again.
One thing I omitted was that the Price family were from Dudley.
Rob.

Thanks Rob and Trish,

I have all of Sarah and John's family from the various census, thanks. The earliest date I had was John and Sarah's marriage - every time I pass Walsall on the M6 I think of them! But finally I have dates for Sarah's family.

There are a lot of Prices in Dudley and I've not got a confirmed family for John yet, although there are plenty of possibilties.

Yes it is the right family, Trish - by 1881 census Sarah has decided she is from Ripley in Derbyshire, which was good news as there were NO Saints in Dudley in the 1800's and plenty in Derbyshire  :)

Hi Helen,
Yes she does say Ripley, Derby in 1881 but it depends who gave the enumerator the info.

That's a good point, Trish.

However, I've never found any Sarah Saints of the right age in Dudley (or nearby places). Also I feel there should be some connection to the James Saint on the 1871 census.

My initial thought was that Sarah's brother (say) moved to Dudley for work, got married and had a family. In the meantime, Sarah (and maybe other siblings) followed him too....who knows?

I'm going to look into this, now that I have a few Saint names of the family of Sarah Saint born 1812. I'm pretty convinced it is "my" Sarah, but there is no confirmation, and not sure what would confirm it.

Helen  :)
