I am looking for others interested in the Clelland and Gardner family in Paisley. Ann Gardner Andrews was bapt 1845, daughter of John Andrews and Janet Clelland. Janet Clelland bapt 1823 was the daughter of James Clelland and Ann Gardner. Ann Gardner bapt 1799 was the daughter of John Gardner and Ann Walker.
Have a found a few items on the family but at a brick wall on the Clelland's and since it seems to not be a very common name , wondered if there were others out there.

It is quite sparse ... there are only 14 Clellands and 21 Cleland's in the 1851 census index for Renfrewshire.

Two main families ... you probably already have the details ..
In Paisley ..
Agnes Clelland aged 51 has with her
James aged 25, Archibald aged 23, Agnes 20, William 17, John 15 and Elizabeth 12
Also in Paisley
John Clelland 38 with Mary Clelland 38 and Janet aged 15, Susan aged 10 and William aged 8.
There is a 47 yr old William who appears to be on his own in Paisley and a 7 yr old George Clelland in Greenock .... no family with him as far as I can see from this index.

Thank you. It seems I am related to the Agnes Clelland (really was Ann Gardner Clelland- She seems to use both names in Census) in the census. So I am probably related to the whole bunch is Paisley.

That is very intersting. I am not sure of a connection but must be more than coincidence.

Nutkin - Both the Leitches and the Hamiltons came from Abbey Paisley, but I have been unable to find any of the children on the IGI.

Hi!
I seem to have some information regarding the Clelland's in Paisley. They are not direct ancestors to us, just through marriage.
I have a William Fleming Clelland b. c 1833 married Margaret Christie 27th July 1866 in Paisley. They had 3 daughters - Ann Gardiner Clelland b.1867, Jane Christie Clelland b.1869, Nelly b. 1871 and 1 son William b. 1872.
William Fleming Clelland's parents were James Clelland and Diana/Ann Gardiner.
We are related through Margaret Christie (she was widowed before marrying William Clelland).

Nutkin: Thanks for your latest submissions. I have much to
give to you, in regards to Cleland that I have researched, that I don't want to print, so if you contact the Webmaster, he has my permission to give you my latest e-mail address. I await your reply, once you have time.

Hi Kristin!
I think we may have an extremely distant link. Going on familysearch, https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bfather_givenname%3Ajames~%20%2Bfather_surname%3Aclelland~%20%2Bmother_surname%3Agardiner~%20%2Brecord_country%3AScotland
James Clelland/Cleland and Ann Gardiner/Gardner had the following children:
William Fleming b. 16th March 1833 ch. 4th April 1833
John & Archibald (I presume twins) b. 19th Oct 1827 ch. 3rd October 1827
James b. 10th April 1825 ch. 24th April 1825
Janet b. 2nd March 1823 ch. 16th March 1823
Elisabeth b. 16th May 1837 ch. 11th June 1837
Ann b. 10th September 1820 ch. 14th September 1820
Agnes b. 9th November 1829 ch. 29th November 1829
There is another Elizabeth b. 28th March 1839
2 other William's are listed also
b. 19th Dec 1831 ch. 25th Dec 1831
b. 11th March 1835 ch. 29th March 1835
So is your Janet Clelland the same as above? If so we have a link through her brother William Fleming Clelland.
It's so very distant though - my husbands 3rd great uncle widow Margaret Christie, remarried to him!

Yes, that is my Janet! You are good! :)

Hi, not sure how old this post is but I've been constructing my own family tree for a couple months and have come across a William Gardner, married to Mary Clelland, with one (known) child, John Gardner.
I have had very little success finding any information on William and Mary but came across this forum after searching their names together. The only information I have of these people is that William Gardner and Mary Clelland lived in Scotland, likely Glasgow, and John Gardner likely came to Australia (which is where I live). John Gardner was born in 1808 but I am unsure when Mary and William were born, but most likely around 1780-ish.
A side note, we also have a Thomas Gardner (father of Edmund Horatio Gardner) which is from a separate branch of the tree but we suspect could be a brother or cousin of John!
Could these people be related to your people or are these names just a coincendence? Would love to hear your input if this post is still active! :)
