Are you looking for Jane Proud who married a John Brownless?
I found two Jane Prouds on the Durham records site, one born 1835 and the other born 1837 both around Frosterley. The one born 1837, her parents were Abraham and Elizabeth (Simpson as it turned out)
I wasn't sure about which Jane it was but I hit lucky and found a birth and death of a child called Abraham Brownless 1866 whose mother was Jane Brownless nee Proud so this convinced me I had the right Jane and she had named her son after her father.

Hello there
Thanks for this information, it has been a while since I touched on this
Yes she did indeed marry John Brownless
I can add now add her details it into my family tree
thanks Jenn

I found a birth on March 8th 1861 of Isabella Brownless (she sadly died in 1862) who's parents were Jane Proud and John Brownless. The birth certificate gives her mothers residence as Holme House Piercebridge but Isabella's birthplace as Picksley Hill, Newton Cap.
On the 1841 and 1851 census there is a Jane Proud living at Newton Cap with John Greenwell and family, she is described as a 'niece' - perhaps she was visiting someone when she went into labour? I thought this was a big coincidence, however I haven't found any connection to the Greenwells yet.
By the way Jane and John were my GG Grandparents.
-
My connection is
my ggmother was Sythe Brownless born 1854 Stainton
her father was Robert born 1812 he married Margaret Cummins
amongst his siblings was Matthew born 1810 who married Hannah Brown amongst their children was John Brownless born 1837 who married Jane Proud
Robert and Matthew's parents were Matthew born 1770 and Janet Wilson born 1779
So by my reckoning Sythe my ggm was a first cousin to John your gggf

Yes I know of Sythe, the lady who sailed to Australia in 1878.
Have we been in contact before?
Regards Brenda
-
I don't honestly know
a cousin of mine who lives in Sydney by the name of Janelle G did a lot of information on the Brownless side of the family though

Yes it was Janelle who I was chatting to, lovely lady, sent me newspaper clippings on William Brownless.
I think I have found a connection to the Greenwells, if i am right, Jane's mother Elizabeth Simpson's mother was called Jane Elliot and she had a sister Ann who married John Greenwell and is the lady who Jane Proud is staying with at Newton Cap, also there is a John H Grenwell, a nephew staying with Abraham in 1851 so I am pretty sure it's the right family.

That is good news then, Janelle is a lovely lady that is true
So Brenda we are cousins of some degree.
Intersting find on the Grenwell's
Kind thoughts Jenn
