Hi there, new to this site but thought I'd try and see if I have any luck finding more information. My connection is with the Kiely family who I think were from Waterford though I don't know which part. My relative Catherine Kiely  was born in 1839 I think and was married to John Baker born 1849 also from Waterford. They had 7 children in total including my G Grandfather Michael and eventually moved to Wales and lived in the Swansea area. Any information or clues would be great as I can't seem to find out anything else about the families during their times in Ireland.

Hi VAL IN NEWPORT

Welcome to Rootschat

Not sure I can be of much help, as I know very little about the McCarthy - Kiely  connection, all I really have is the two names in a letter written by a relative from Ireland, who has since passed on,  judging the time frame the marriage would have taken place between 1830-1860 and definitely  in County Waterford. If at any time in the future I find out more I will be in touch. Thanks for your interest, good luck.

Thanks for your reply. it was good to hear from you again. Do you know which part of Waterford the Kiely family came from? There are so many areas of Waterford that I don't really know where to start looking.
Thanks, Val

Hi irish

Don't remember getting a notification about this post, was interested to hear that you have a Fitzgerald connection as well, is it  possible that you have a Bridget Fitzgerald in your tree, born about 1830, probably in Waterford, parents unknown she married a Owen McCarthy and lived in Ballymacart.

I have Fitzgerald Ancestors that I am also trying to trace.

Mary Ann Fitzgerald b.1835 Ireland, m. Thomas Hooley Cardiff Wales,1856.
Her fathers name was Timothy Fitzgerald b.1784-86 Ireland.
His fathers name was Redmond Fitzgerald but I have no other information before 1835.
any connection to your Fitzgerald Family?

Kind regards,

Mary

Hi Mary

Welcome to Rootschat, my Fitzgerald family came from County Waterford, Bridget Fitzgerald was born abt 1831, parents unknown,  married Owen McCarthy in 1852.
Irish research beyond this is sketchy, as very little records remain due to a fire in the Four Courts building in Dublin, which destroyed many of the official records in 1922. The only way that I have gained any information is through Parish records. At this stage I have not researched the Fitzgerald's beyond Bridget. Good luck with your search.

My Grandmother, Bridget Power, was first married to William Kiely who died around 1924.  She then married a McCarthy, but I don't know his first name. My Grandmother and her Kiely family lived on Browns Lane in Waterford, and I believe her 2nd husband Mr. McCarthy did too.  They did not have any children together, according to my mother, who was one of the youngest in the kiely family.

A Patrick Kiely and a Mrs Margaret Kiely both of 3 Brownes Lane are mentioned in the Waterford News of 18th August 1922 in a list of people who made claims to the town clerk for compensation due to the siege of Waterford.

My Great Grandmother was Johanna(Anna)(Joanna) Anatasia McCarthy.  born 11/11/1864 County of Waterford, Kill, Ireland.  She traveled with her mother, grandmother, and two brothers to New York around 1871 or 1872, to meet up with her father.  Her mother died on the ship enroute to New York, and is buried on Staten Island.  We don't have names of any of her family.  Joanna married William Green in Marquette, Michigan 1882, who had moved there from Scotland.  She lived to be 88, died April 1952.  They had 7 children, 5 sons, 2 daughters.  Son, William J. Green, is my grandfather.

Anyone with information about Joanna's siblings, parents, grandparents,
I would appreciate it.

Bridget Power married William Keily in 1911. William Keily was born in 1880 and had 2 brothers... James and John and a sister..Ellen. The family lived in browns lane Waterford.Their parents were Thomas Keily (b c.1856) and Mary Davis and they appear to have been from Tramore Co. Waterford They were married in Tramore in 1880 and had addresses there at the time.
James Keily married a Bridget Donovan in 1902. Ellen died in 1884 aged 2 years.
William Keily died in 1926 from heart failure. he was aged 39 and died at no.1 browns lane.
His widow Bridget Keily (nee Power)went on to re-marry in june 1930 to John ( Jack ) Mccarthy.
He was a widower, His occupation was a Stonemason, and he lived in High st at time of marriage.
Bridget was listed as still living in Browns lane  time of marriage. It is known that Mccarthys lived at no.6 browns lane in the 1950s. Pehaps the same family ?

Above Patrick Kiely and Margaret Kiely of 3 browns lane would be my Grandfather / Grandmother.
The claim referred to was in connection to the shooting of their son Patrick ( my father ) in 1922
He was fired upon by state troops and shot in back of neck for being out after curfew. ( 9pm )
This injury resulted in his permanent loss of hearing.
