Hi Folks
I'm looking for any info around the PR's for St John's in Chelmorton.
My 3 x Great Grandmother Hannah GYTE was born there in 1816...on her marriage to William MOTTERAM in 1845 her father is named as Peter GYTE.
I'm aware that these PR's are stored at the DRO ....but I was just keen to learn if anyone had already transcribed the full PR's or partialy.
My belief is that Peter was married to Esther OLLERENSHAW .... if I could confirm this ...it would be great.
Cheers
Alan

The IGI has several more children for Peter and Esther, all baptised at Chelmorton.
The most recent, Samuel, was baptised on 24 Sept 1837.
Unfortunately, Samuel's birth doesn't appear to have been registered.
(Otherwise you could get Esther's maiden name from the b cert.)

Hi
Thanks for all the comments... I'm awaiting a copy of what I believe will be my Esther's death certificate from Bakewell in 1837 ....hopefully it may contain some further clues ... hopefully Peter will have been the informant ...there is a Peter GYTE shown in the Death register for 1840 ...if he was still alive in 37 I'll get that next .
I've never been able to find them anywhere after extensive searches on the 41 in Derbyshire ... perhaps I now know why ..Doh!!
If there is anyone out there who is related to this family I would like to mention that a family descendant of Peter's eldest son George GYTE is holidaying in the Buxton area during June and has offered an open invite to meet up whilst here ...I can supply further details if required.
Alice lives in Madison Wisconsin and is coming with her husband Steve

Hi Again
Eventually received my death certificate for Esther GYTE .. ....she was the wife of Peter GYTE and died in september 1837 ...aged 45 which means she was born in Chelmorton in 1792 .... does anyone have any knowledge of an Esther *** ? born 1792 in Chelmorton?
The links to OLLERENSHAW are now a bit tenuous ...one in 1770 and one in 1798 ..albeit the one in 1770 cannot have married DAWSON ..that must have been the Esther from 1798 in line with the 51, 61 and 71 census records.
I have Peters death in 1840 on order it may help a bit depending on who registered the death
... any other help would be gratefully accepted ...
Just to remind any GYTE family members out there that Steve & Alice DRAKE of Wisconsin USA (descendents of Peter and Esther GYTE of Chelmorton) are visiting Buxton England in July and have an open invite on the 16th July to any family descendents members to join them
for lunch.
enquiries by e-mail for further details
cheers

Hi Al
IGI batch number C061282 covers Chelmorton baptisms from 1663 to 1812. There were several girls called Esther, but the most recent was in 1744. Is it possible that she was born elsewhere?

Hi
I received the death certificate for Peter GYTE today ...he was 53 on his death in 1840 ....which means he was born abt 1787 and therefore wasn't the Peter GYTE i had been led to believe.
I now need to check the PR's for Chelmorton by sight ...the IGI and every other source i can find offers up no leads.
On the 41 census Hannah GYTE b1816 (she was the informant) was living with her younger brother William b1833 and also John GYTE b1840 in Chelmorton.
Both William and Hannah are shown as born Chelmorton on later census ... John was born in Tideswell.
In 1845 Hannah married William MOTTRAM and John was raised as a MOTTRAM.
He remained a MOTTRAM (51 Census) until he left home for Oldham ...and was then reverted back to GYTE on the 61 census.
On his wedding to Nanny BUCKLEY in 64 he gives his fathers name as John Montague BROWN .... i suspect this was Hannahs son to Mr Brown
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DBY/Pigot1835/dbytides.html
... has him residing in Tideswell in 1835
It is of course possible that both Peter and Esther were not from Chelmorton ...but I believe they settled there from at least 1812 onwards ..

Hi Folks
Breakthrough .... I had another look back through my BVRI disks and found a Peter GUITE b1787 to Samuel GUITE b1758 and Lydia in Chelmorton.
Samuel and Lydia l had other children Hannah, Ruth and Samuel.
I now believe that this Samuel GYTE was most likely the the son of Peter GYTE and Anne
So i've found a missing generation ...which explains away the huge age difference between my Esther and the Peter GYTE which is published on Gencircles.
I'm sure the PR's for St John Chemorton will give me Esthers surname when I get to it.
Thanks for all the hints and information.

Hi
Sorry to be late joining this thread, but I've only just joined rootschat.
I have an ancestor Mary Gyte, baptised in Chelmorton 8/12/1724, the daughter of Thomas Gyte and Elizabeth Ollerenshaw.
Thomas & Elizabeth were married in Chelmorton 27/4/1700.
IGI claims a Thomas Gyte was bapt in Chelmorton 20/10/1678, however my transcription of the PR (which is hard to read and has the edge of the page missing) is
"Robert Gyte the son of Thomas Gyte of Mon... baptised the 20 day of October 1678"
which would imply the IGI is wrong there. "Mon..." where the edge of the page is missing, is probably Monyash by the way.
Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark ...welcome to the forum....
Your Mary b1724 was I believe the younger sister to my 6xGG Peter GYTE by 1714 .... There are quite a few trees on Gencircles which list this family ...and mine now for some reason, which are incorrect in my opinion ... so you need to be careful ...I always pick up the data but never qualify it till I have good source support.
I think I have my GYTE line back to the same Thomas and Elizabeth OLLERENSHAW...
What I am confident of is the following
Alan WATERHOUSE m Alison WHITEOAK Oldham
Eric WATERHOUSE m Audrey BUCKLEY Oldham
Joe WATERHOUSE m Emily ASHTON Oldham
Fred WATERHOUSE m Florrie BRIGGS Oldham
Elijah WATERHOUSE m Esther MOTTRAM 1865 Glossop
William MOTTRAM m Hannah GYTE 1845 Bakewell
Peter GYTE m Esther ??? pre 1812
from here on its conjecture in line with the BVRI and IGI records
Samuel GYTE m Lydia ?? pre 1783
Peter GYTE m Anne BIRCHENOUGH pre 1744
Thomas GYTE m Elizabeth OLLERENSHAW pre 1703
I was in Chelmorton last year and took some digital images of GYTE gravestones ...but I just can't make out all the detail ... we would have spent more time but it was snowing unfortunately ...
Where did you get your transcript of the PR's from? ... I would love to get hold of a copy ...
Cheers Alan

Hi Alan
I wasn't aware of your Peter b c1714, but then I know that I have a large gap in Mary's siblings, as I only have Anne 1703, Thomas 1708 and Mary 1724.
I'll look for his baptism in the PR next time I go to the record office (which may be a while!). Incidentally thats where I got the info on Robert, son of Thomas' baptism from, when I said transcript, I meant an entry I'd transcribed myself. I have a large number of ancestors from in and around Chelmorton parish and would love to find a transcript too!

Just for the record 'The Diaries of Maria Gyte of Sheldon, Derbyshire' Edited by Gerald Phizackerly were published by Scarthin Books, Cromford, Derbyshire in 1999. ISBN 0-907758-96-7
Diaries kept by Maria Gyte wife of Anthony Gyte and mother of 'Tony' Gyte Killed WW1 Nov 1917. Other children were - Mary, Tom, Ethel & Emily.
Before her marriage Maria was the village schoolmistress.
The diary mentions lots of local residents and some other local servicemen.
Sheldon is 4 miles from Chelmorton.
An Evelyn Gyte is also mentioned.
I don't mind doing look ups to see if a surname crops up in the book as there is a detailed index. But due to copyright you will need to get a copy of the book to check it out the full details yourself. Fascinating read!

The following may help, from the book 'Dear Sister' - http://library.mstn.govt.nz/history/DearSister.html

Farmed 150 acres at Sheldon in 1861, and 180 acres at the time of the 1871 census. Attended her mother’s funeral Autumn 1861. Died 11 DEC 1883.
