Title: Magilton/McGilton
Post by: teap78 on Thursday 12 January 06 01:13 GMT (UK)
my GGG grand mother was Elizabeth Magilton/McGilton in the 1901 census she stated she was from Belfast and was 68 years old. she married my GGG Grand father John Mullen who stated he was from Tyrone and was 70. At the minute I'm not able to find out any info on Elizabeth at all apart from what was on the 1901 census. I cant even seem to find the origins of the name or the proper Spelling. Anyone know of any McGiltons/Magiltons?

Colette:

Ros Davies has quite a few listings of Magilton/McGilton in her County DOwn site.  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/M/Mag.htm

Caora, in its Down index of heads-of-household census and Griffiths also has some. http://www.caora.net/find.php

If you haven't seen this Ancestry Board, it could be a gold mine for you.

Hope this helps some.

Good luck,

Pat

Thankyou for the prompt reply pat, so it looks like the magiltons originate in county down. Im thinking if i could find her marriage to John Mullen it would help quiet a bit and im just thinking i have some dates of births for their children might get a clue from sponsors too.

all systems go again ;D

I wouldn't limit it to Down. Antrim is also possible. I looked at the Vital Records Index but just found five marriages.

No luck on their marriage.  :(

Thankyou Pat and Anthony. now the mind is working 10 to the dozen here now let me see Anthony you have just gave me an idea by mentioning Ormeau road ive noticed on a few bits and bobs that i have that Elizabeth Magilton married John Mullen and they lived at various addresses not far from the ormeau road before slowly moving up the falls to balaclava street and eventually 4 Forest street.
One address was 5 Stanfield Street, there was also Keegan Street. John Mullen was from Tyrone but he and some if not all his family must have moved to belfast on one of the childrens baptism lines it says
Mary Mullen 22/09/1861 (my GG gran) Baptised St Patricks witness was James Mullen (Fathers Brother?)
Oh My God ive just found  something that i have scribbled out in my note book its Thomas Magilton/Catherine Brennan 14/11/1858 St Malachys and ive also got Elizabeth Magilton wrote beside it hell this must be a marriage and she must have been the witness her brother??? it must be the thomas from 19 ormeau road God how dumb am i? now that means she married John Mullen between 1859 and 1861 when Mary was born.
Ive also found a Mary Lavinia Mullen 9 Stanfield Street 1858-59

Brain Freezeeeeeeeee

colette

John was from Tyrone Dungannon Killyman ward

Hi Colette
Just checked the timelines on Glenravel on-line (see resources).

August 1884.  Mary Mullen of Curtis Street, was summoned for keeping a shebeen after police found one bottle of champagne, four pints of whiskey: beer and porter were found on the premises. She was fined 5 shillings.

There are assorted other Mullens, McMullens and Magiltons but not the names you quote.  Have a look especially in 1890's.

Online references indicate that the McGiltons owned Ballycopeland Windmill from the 1830s to the 1930s, was your grandmother descended from these folk in 1901 and 1911?

The following is from the Belfast News-letter of 11 February 1931, I'm assuming that this notice was placed by Robert and Samuel, the ancient monuments office took over the windmill in 1936:

McGilton - February 10, 1931, at her residence, Ballycopeland, Mary Ann, relict of the late Thomas McGilton, in her 87th year. The remains of our dearly-beloved mother  will be removed for interment in the family burying-ground, Millisle, tomorrow (Thursday), 12th inst., at 2 o'clock.  R. AND S. McGilton.

I can see an entry in the PRONI marriage index for a Belfast registered marriage in 1926 between a John Bell and an Elizabeth McGilton, is this her in 1911?

Elizabeth Mary, the daughter born in 1902 to John Fulton McGilton and Mary Ann McCracken:

Her parent's marriage in 1900:

Her grandparent's marriage in 1870 (Thomas McGilton - Mary Anne Fulton):
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1870/11400/8186064.pdf

Edited to add:

I wondered why Elizabeth Mary was in the household of John Mitchell in the 1911 census, sadly it turns out that while Elizabeth Mary was born in March 1902, her mother Mary Ann (McCracken) McGilton died in November that same year:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1902/05682/4601389.pdf

John Mitchell was one of the executors of her will:  Probate of the Will of Mary Anne M'Gilton late of Ballycopeland County Down Married Woman who died 11 November 1902 granted at Belfast to John Mitchell and Thomas M'Gilton Farmers.

You can find and read her will at the link below, daughter Elizabeth Mary gets a mention (there are other Will Calendar index entries for these Ballycopeland McGiltons, but Mary Anne McGilton's is the only will uploaded to read online):
https://apps.proni.gov.uk/WillsCalendar_IE/WillsSearch.aspx

I'm guessing John Mitchell was related through marriage to Eliza Fulton in 1879 (a sister of the Mary Anne Fulton who married Thomas McGilton?):

There are lots of Irish newspapers covered in Find My Past (a pay site)-
https://www.findmypast.co.uk/search-newspapers (select Irish collection where results come up)

Lots of information found for you already. You've made 3 requests in this one thread and seemed to have neglected to include a 'thank you.'
