I've just googles hornbeam tree.
American Hornbeam
Common names, Musclewood, Ironwood, Bluebeech and Waterbeech. Horn for toughness and beam an old English word for "tree" and refers to this tree's very hard, tough wood.
Leaves similar to beech, thin and beautifully translucent. However there are many leaves giving a dense appearance and providing much cool shade in summer. The leaves are finely and sharply double-toothed. They are thin but firm in texture, dark green above a paler beneath, smooth with long pointed tips and rounded base. In late Autumn they turn deep scarlet and orange.
I like my tree.

According to my book 'Searching for Hornbeam' Chris Howkins - 'it belongs to the birch family, also Hazel and Alder. In early spring has bright green catkins and normally found in coppice woodland as gnarled little trees. (My fiance says they are his favourite tree - full of character) The wood was traditionally coppiced for a range of things from windmills sails to clogs. Sounds like it was very hard wearing strong wood and was often used for charcoal as it burns hottest and longest.
Kerry
-
Sounds lovely Kerry.
I love catkins.
I shall adopt a tree now ... a Hornbeam of course.
Su :D
-
Before I saw what tree I was, i picked one at random and found that much matched me.
So I think there is something for everyone in every tree.
Bit like a cold reading from a medium ;)
-

I fell from the Chestnut Tree and I do posess a very unusual beauty - the reflection in my mirror looks very, very unusual - not quite human looking most of the time.
-
Modest as well, then ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I'm a Hazelnut :o, which is funny as it is about the only nut I can eat :-\, provided it is covered in chocolate of course ;D
-
I'm a lime tree - now is that the nice one that goes in my G & Ts or the one that drips on people's cars??
;D ;D
LIME TREE (Doubt) - accepts what life dishes out in a composed way, hates fighting, stress, and labor, dislikes laziness and idleness, soft and relenting, makes sacrifices for friends, many talents but not tenacious enough to make them blossom, often wailing and complaining, very jealous but loyal.

tricia
-
Aw Tricia - you say the nicest things - what do you want?? LOL ;D ;D
My children will tell you I am a confirmed tree-hugger (any variety) and son thinks I do nothing all day (whatever gave him that idea?) so maybe there is something in it!?!

WALNUT TREE (Passion) - unrelenting, strange and full of contrasts, often egotistic, aggressive, noble, broad horizon, unexpected reactions, spontaneous, unlimited ambition, no flexibility, difficult and uncommon partner, not always liked but often admired, ingenious strategist, very jealous and passionate, no compromise.

Sharon
-
re-checked it and my husband is also a Walnut and the one thing that stick out is no compromise, that sounds about right for both of us.
Sharon
-
Rowan Tree (Sensitivity) Full of charm, cheerful, gifted without egoism, likes to draw attention, loves life, motion, unrest and even complications, is both dependent and independent, good taste, artistic, passionate, emotional, good company, does not forgive - oh eck, I agree with that one, my workmates once gave me a cup with ' To err is human, to forgive is not my policy'
My Celtic birth sign has me as an Alder Tree:
The Alder people are born leaders, intelligent, competitive, intuitive and strong, they march to the beat of their own drum. They court success, are natural entertainers and exude charm. When challenged they can become short tempered and need to practice seeking peacful outcomes through listening and negotiation.
