Title: Worcestershire County Cricket
Post by: jean Sandra on Wednesday 15 September 04 09:59 BST (UK)
Hi,
an ancestor of mine, Major Lionel Mills, played for the Worcestershire 2nd eleven sometime AROUND 1890 - 1900.
He went on to be a cricket coach at Cadbury's in Bournville.
Does anyone know how I can find records which could relate to him?
Many thanks,
Jean Sandra

Hi Jean

Geoff of Devon gave me this to look at for one of my relations:

All county and international cricket players and umpires are catalogued in:
http://www.cricketarchive.com/
and
http://usa.cricinfo.com/db/PLAYERS/
It gives DOB, DOD and places!

Hope he made the 1st eleven just once!!   ;D ;D

Cheers

Keith

Hi Jean,
I have  Donald Mclean abt 1883[died abt 1918] and Suannah Potter [nz] [parents..samuel potter-mary hadley] who married in Westbromwich 1903  and on the cert Donald's father is listed as deceased and a proffessional cricket player,i have not been able to find anything certin on this, some family members think he played for Worcestershire also abt 1880 - to at least 1900? I cant find a match for him in 1881 either,so have no idea where he was brn.
However i did find a Donald Mclean brn in Kidderminster 1883  to a Donald Mclean and a Emma Cox in Kidderminster married  in 1882 and they also had a Edward mclean brn 1884..he died 1893 Westbromwich age 9 ..now a Donald Mclean died in 1884 Kidderminster aged 42 and Emma remarried a William Mills 1895 in Westbromwich and they are in the 1901 census...is this my Mclean's ?...If you find a Donald Mclean on your travels i would be glad of your help.

Thanks Anne-Maree

Hi Anne Marie,

its interesting that both cricketers lived in Kidderminster. They probably knew each other!

You're not researching the Hellon family are you?

My husband has an ancestor Margaret Hellon from Whitehaven in Cumberland.

will let you know if I come across McLeans from Kidderminster etc.

Regards

Jean Sandra

Hi There,

If both cricketers lived in Kiderminster then it may be worth your while getting someone to look through the old copies of "Kidderminster Times &  Kidderminster Shuttle" as the names would more than probably be in them both & I know that Kidderminster Library have them on film just as do Worcester History Centre as Ive looked at them in both places many times when on holiday in Worcestershire.

Good Luck

All the very best
