i am looking for joseph fokinther born around 1809 in scarborough by 1851 he was living in brackenfild derbyshire with his wife jane and his family he may have had a son joseph also.i dont seem able to find his marriage to jane. on the 1851 census he was down as james but i'm fairly sure he was joseph i will be grateful for any information anyone has thankyou

In later census records he is always Joseph. Perhaps you could get a birth certificate for one of the children then that would give you Jane's maiden name which might be an easier one to search on. Fokinther could be written in so many ways and if they could not read then they may not have checked it.

In 1851 census James & Jane had children James Matilda Jane and Ann all born 1841-1848 in Scarborough, Elithia born 1850 Derbyshire, so they should be in Scarborough somewhere in 1841, will have a look through the cd later this evening and get back to you.

Hi Josie,
Found them, yet another spelling for your collection! I suppose the enumerator wrote what he heard and if Joseph was an Ag.Lab perhaps he couldn't read or write -
1841 HO107/1266/9 fol.25 p.3 Sepulchre St, Scarborough
Josh. Faulengther 32 Ag. Lab
Jane " 27
Betsey Smith 14
Looks as if their son James was born either later that year or 1842
I found Dixon Fokinther marriage at Scarboro 4th Quarter 1838 24 531 (GRO ref)
and Elizabeth Ann Falkingham born Scarboro 3rd Quarter 1839 XXIV 439 also the IGI site has a baptism for Elizabeth Ann Falkington 30 Aug 1839 parents Joseph Falkington & Jane. Too much of a coincidence not to be your Fokinthers, what do you think??
Looks like a birth cert would help a lot.........good hunting, Barbara

Hi there,
I am looking for Falkingtons in ERY and NRY also!! Thanks to your posting I now have another handfull of spellings!! If you ever come across the birth of a Sarah Falkington (or whatever) I would love to know about it. Sarah had three illigitimate daughters Hannah, Charlotte and Sophia (my gg-grandmother) Sophie named her first child (also illig.) Joseph. Sarah's girls were born at Skipsea and Bridlington areas.
Cheers from down under - fingers crossed for the socceroos tonight.

Hi Josie,
Thanks for answering my posting - I think it is highly possible that all the various spellings are connected. I know it is so frustrating and Flamborough is in my Falkingtons 'patch' as well I am viewing everything that sounds remotely similar as highly 'suspicious' but still no Sarahs though.

hi leoni, nice to here from you again,i visited my dads cousin in wales but i'm afraid he's like me and didn't ask questions when growing up and now there's no one left to ask so we are still at a dead end please keep in touch if you find anything else out best wishes josie

Hi again,
It is Leonie from Aust. and I have found my Sarah Faulkinton born 1781 in Bridlington with mother Mary alas still no dads. I have been finding the batch numbers from the IGI and scouring all the names beginning with F and I have trawled quite a few suspect spellings. I have just moved and so things are topsy turvey so when I get hold of my Falkington file I will put things together and get back to you. Hope your research is going in a forward direction.
Leonie White.
