Can anyone please look on the above census returns for Thomas Helme (with or without the 'e') born in Lancaster 1831 or 1832. He was my gg grandfather and subsequently married Emma Broscombe in Huddersfield around 1850.

Is this the Thomas Helmes who is living in Leeds in the 1861 census?

Yes - he was living at 95 Wheeler Row, East Leeds (Parish of All Saints) with his wife Emma and children Harry, Mary Ellen, Joseph E and Willey.

I checked the 1861 as I was having difficulty finding the correct Thomas Helme on the 1851. :) I saw that on the 1861 census his birthplace was Lancashire not the town Lancaster.
On 1851 there are 3 Thomas Helmes born Preston, Kirkham and Bulk in the right age range. Plus one Thomas Helm born Thurnham.
I have no way of knowing which is the correct one unless you have some more information about his parents or birthplace :(

Emma is still unmarried in 1851 and living with her mother.

Thanks very much. I was going by the returns I had checked and he stated he was born in Lancaster. Will check further.

I finally have information about Thomas's father. His name was Edward Helme. I have no knowledge yet of his mothers name or where either of them may have been born. Any help would be appreciated.

Emma Broscombe was my g g grandmother and she married my g g grandfather at Almondbury Parish Church on 31March 1851. I would be interested in your information. What relation is Emma's family to you?
In 1912 two of Emmas relatives, E L Broscombe and Annie B Broscombe together with a Tom Rockett were witnesses at my grandfather Leonard Helm's wedding to Emily Brooke. We seem to have lost the final 'e' on the surname sometime in the late 1800's,

Emma's great grandfather was my 5xGreat grandfather James Broscomb born @ 1708.
There is a record (that I can't find again) of a James Broxham baptised somewhere on Oct 26 1712 who could be the one but there are records of lots of Broxoms etc in Batley & Birstall from 1640. Before that it appears they were Broxups from Blackburn(?) Lancashire.
Your Broscombes were quite a puzzle since many took the name Mcguire. Your 2 witnesses were i'm sure christened Earnest Leonard Broscomb Mcguire and Anna Beatrice Mcguire.
The Mcguires appear to have changed back to using Broscombe in the 1900s
