Title: Strathclyde football team?
Post by: Floss on Sunday 08 January 06 14:57 GMT (UK)
Hi All

I've posted this in the 'occupation' section as well.  One of my ancestors William Mowet McIntosh (various spellings) was listed on his marriage certificate in 1923 as a professional football player and also the same on another certificate dated 1927.  I want to know how I can find out which team he might have played for.  My dad seems to recall (from family talk)  Strathclyde or the 'Strathies' but I'm unsure if this is/was an actual team.  Can anybody help?

I'm not aware of any 'real' football team/club that played in or was a member of the Scottish Football Association, but they might be worth a call if they could throw any light on it.

A number of books and plays refer to 'Strathclyde Football Club' but only as a ficticious entity (and it saves on court costs than if the writer chose Rangers FC or another 'live' club!). They also featured in an episode of Taggart. There still is a Strathclyde Evangelical Churches Football League, and Strathclyde University have a football club, but none of these are professional.

Good luck!

Having been a follower of Scottish Junior football all my life, i'm pretty sure Strathclyde were a Junior team who i think won the junior cup in 1925. I'll dig a little deeper for you.

Strathclyde played in Scottish Junior Football. If you check www.answers.com/topic/scottish-junior-cup you will see that they won the Scottish Junior Cup in seasons 1896/97 - 1906/07- 1925-26

They might have been based in Motherwell area.

Searching on Google brings up a few entries for them but generally referring to the cup records .... one odd one mentioned them in passing as one of the "big" clubs of Junior Football that folded in the early 1960s

I am  former office-bearer of Strathclyde F.C. ( instituted in 1886, closed 1965 following fire damage).
It is possible that Fionas ancester may have played for the club but all records were unfortunately
destroyed in the fire.
There is a photograph of Strathclyde F.C. (1896) on view at the Scottish Football Museum, Hampden Park

New Springfield Park, Dalmarnock: The 5th and penultimate home of Strathclyde Juniors F.C. until their move to East Kilbride in 1964 . Now the site of the 2014 Commonwealth Games Athlete's Village and legacy housing.

As per the suggestion from dixons Strathclyde were three times Scottish Junior Cup Winners
also losing finalists to Kilwinning Rangers in 1907/8.
The club ground was Springfield Park which housed an estimated 19,000 crowd to a 5th round
Scottish Cup replay with Irvine Meadow in 1947/48. Turnstile entrance was at Silverdale Street
(adjacent to Belvidere Hospital and not far from Celtic Park). They had earlier had a ground by
the name of Beechwood from which they moved to Springfield Park in the 1920's.
All accomodation at Springfield was destroyed in a huge fire in 1965 from which the club was
unable to recover.
