I have in my family a Quartan Lamplough any ideas what is is or where it originates from?

LAMPLOUGH is the name of a famous index in Victoria, Australia. See:

Hi Jap,
sorry it was the Quartan I thought unusual but perhaps not,
the Lamploughs (my father) are from Yorkshire & Cumbria not the town in Australia.
I thought quartan probably meant four but I was just wondering if there were any other explanation,

Jakky - it looks like Quarton was a family name handed down following a marriage between Matthew Lamplugh and Mary Quarton on 7 Jun 1756 in Millington, Yorks. The first Quarton Lamplough JAP mentions is a son of Matthew Lamplough and Mary.

that is great news, I have not got that far yet, as I was saving my dad's very interesting family untill I had done my mums.
On New Years day I could wait no longer. I am so looking forwards to it.

That's interesting Rambler! There's a Quarton APPLETON with a similar origin - son of William and Ann; her surname (from what I presume is the relevant marriage entry) is QUARTON. Similarly Quarton ALVIN; mother (from marriage entry) is Hannah QUATON (sic). There are very few individuals with forename Quarton (however spelled) in the IGI or on FreeBMD; and only about six hundred entries in the IGI for the name as a surname. There are more with the surname LAMPLOUGH (however spelled) but it's still not a common name - especially when one takes into account that there are often multiple entries in the IGI for the one individual (birth/christening and marriage; marriage banns in two parishes; and LDS submissions).
The spelling Quarton as a forename seems preferable to the spelling Quartan as occurs in the first and fifth Quarton/Quartan LAMPLOUGH/LAMPLUGHs to bear the name. The dictionary gives the meaning of 'quartan' as occurring every fourth day, normally applied to a recurring fever or ague as in quartan malaria.

Hello Jakky,
A late reply to your 2006 post ,which I have just found. My husband is a descendant of Elizabeth LAMPLOUGH c. 1757 ,who was the oldest sibling of Quarton LAMPLOUGH C. 1771. Their parents were indeed Matthew LAMPLOUGH and Mary QUARTON. Elizabeth married John DALTON in 1786 and our branch came to Australia circa 1870.

I've come across a Quarton Lamplough Leedom born in 1852. Not one of 'my' Leedoms sadly, but a memorable enough name for me not to forget it - at least now I know where the name must have come from.
