has anyone any idea where i could look for records concerning children who were shipped from liverpool to australia in the 1920s and 1930s?

Hi Alison
If you start from the Australian Archives (they probably won't have the detail you want) - at this site
http://www.naa.gov.au/publications/fact_sheets/fs124.html
they have links to data held by the Australian States, which is where your information is probably available.

I have been trying to trace 3 x boys came to Oz 1938 on Orama. Parents sent them to 'training school' in NSW - could not support them in Manchester as father was injured. Family name Millward. All I can get so far is ship arrival date - is there a 'privacy embargo' on this?

Hi ken
Where did you find the shipping information? If it was state records NSW you would have to follow up there to find the details.
Doubtful that there is a privacy embargo for that date - but the records are no doubt "buried" in one of the Oz archives.

Have a look at http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/aibs/091
This is Archives in Brief 91, 20th Century Child and Youth Migrants. This contains details of the organisations which brought children to NSW e.g. Barrnardos, Big Brother, Christian Brothers, etc. It does contain lists of names. Good luck!

Hi Ken,
There is no privacy embargo on records of that age. The NAA has produced an online index of passengers who passed through Fremantle between 1926 and 1947 and this also contains many people who did not disembark in Fremantle but carried on to more easterly ports.
I have found your three boys on the Orama: Arthur, John, and Leslie D. They arrived, I suppose in Fremantle, on 19 March 1938. The item details are as follows:
Title
Inward passenger list "Orama" arrived Fremantle 19 March 1938
Item barcode 12077433
Series number K269
Series accession number K269/4
Control symbol
ORAMA 19 MARCH 1938
Location Perth
There may also be a digital image of this but we are having problems with the image viewing system just recently and alot of images aren't showing :(
If you go to Recordsearch on the NAA webpage (www.naa.gov.au) and put in the barcode, you will get a screen that will allow you to purchase a copy of the item.
Hope this helps

I should add that the ship passenger list won't have much information, but it will give ages and places of embarkation, as well as being able to see what other people were on the ship.
For details of where they went after they arrived, you'll need to follow Diana's excellent advice :)
