Hi Frances

The information on the marriage and Ruth Bussell is terrific. Thank you very much.
Would like to know the siblings of Ruth Bussell (I have the siblings of the Joseph born 1818 that you mention).
Kind regards

Hi,
I have further info on the Bussells. William Bussell was the son of William and Ruth Bussell who married in 1746 in East Stoke, Dorset. Their other son, James, christened in 1751 (also in Higher Melcombe) was my husband's ancestor. He married Hannah Locke in 1775, then Susannah Major in 1788. The family later moved to Stourton Caundle. Would anyone like further details? I appreciate the marriage of Ruth to Joseph Christopher!
Kindest regards - Jean

Oh dear...I have James Bussell born 1751 married to a Sarah Dennis 11 February 1776 in Wykes Regis. Also have daughter Mary Bussell born before 1 April 1781 in Wykes Regis.
Also have William Bussell father to James born about 1723 in Melcome Horsey.
Possible parents to William Bussell (1723) were John Bussell (died 1743 in Wyke Regis), married to Maria anna (died 18 December 1741).
Other possible siblings to William Snr Ann; John; Edith; Mary and Nappon?? Bussell.
I believe William Bussell (Abt 1749), Jame's brother married a Sarah Legg (Abt 1754 in Loders, Dorset) on 8 July 1775 in Dewlish and had the following children:
Ruth Bussell (Bef 23 November 1776); Fanny Bussell (Bef 18 November 17972); Sarah Bussell (Bet 14 December 1786); William Richard (Bef 12 November 1781); Dailey (Bef 10 October 1777); Richard (Bef 29 September 1786); Charles (Bef 1 May 1789 Died June 1873 Dorchester).
As you know Ruth Bussell married Joseph Christopher.
We have discovered that DonnaM (the lady that has also responded to this post - refer post dated 30 January 2006) and I are 3rd cousins through the Christopher line.
Am I wrong in presuming that your husband could also be a cousin?
I would appreciate any info you have on the above.
Kind regards
Cazza

Hi Cazza,
here we go then! This is what I have, with sources:
William Bussell m Ruth Baker East Stoke 10th Sept 1746 (BVRI 2) William was buried in wool in Cheselbourne 22nd Mar 1780
Children - William christened 4th Jun 1750 in Higher Melcombe Chapel
James christened 14th Jan 1751 Higher Melcombe Chapel. (PR's) There is another christening on the BVRI 2, called James, in Cheselbourne 16th Mar 1747.
Higher Melcombe was once a thriving rural village in the heart of the Blackmore Vale - real Hardy country, now only a farm survives.
On our side James married first Hannah Locke on 19th Sept 1775 in Cheselbourne, witnesses were Mary Lock and John White. James signed his name and it is recognisable on his later will. (PR's)
Children were:
James christened 9th Dec 1776
John christened 25th Feb 1779
Mary christened 20th Jun 1780, all in Cheselbourne (PR's)
Both John and Mary married in Stourton Caundle. James (1776) died in SC and left a will.
Hannah was buried on 25th Feb 1784
James now married Susannah Major on 29th Oct 1788 in Cheselbourne, witnesses were JOhn Dominey and John White.
Children were:
Joseph born c 1790
Maria born c 1792
Job and Isaac. A note in the Stourton Caundle register reads 'These children were each several years old and were christened when their elder brother Joseph was buried'. Date was 6th Sept 1799.
Maria survived and married in SC, Job was buried 29th Sept 1799, Isaac 12th Sept 1799. Sad little tale.
Think that might be enough for now! There are Bussells in the Stourton Caundle register in the early 1700's, including a Richard and Jean Bussell who were having children there in the 1750's, I rather suspect they were related to our Cheselbourne lot.
The Wyke Regis Bussells were shipbuilders and chandlers, while ours were plasterers and tilers so I believed them to be a separate line. I did some research on that line for someone in Canada and I coudln't find a connection, doesn't mean there isn't one!
more to come yet...Jean

Hi Cazza,
back again after a lovely day walking around Weymouth, some mad folk even in swimming - didn't think it was quite warm enough for that yet!
I have the same children as you listed for William and Sarah Bussell, the PR's spell Dailey as Doyly (strange name isn't it?) that is exactly how it is spelt on the Militia Records later. I suspect it sounded that way - not sure if he could read or write. I do have an additional child, another Ruth christened 27/08/1775 in Dewlish but she must have died young.
The Cheselbourne records also show a marriage of a William Bussell to an Elizabeth Weeks 11th July 1759, a possible child is Sarah, christened 04/07/1766. A second marriage perhaps for the older William.
On searching last night the IGI lists a possible source for this William, In Stourton Caundle there are 4 children listed for a James and Mary Bussell,
James christened 30/1/1703
Mar christened 14/04/1707
William christened 12/03/1708
Richard christened 17/02/1719
James himself shows as being christened 8/4/1682 - his father was William.
RIchard stayed in SC and caused me much confusion with this line as all the names are so similar! He had a son James who also left a will.
This would make you related to my husband - not sure on the degree of separation though!
Kindest regards- Jean
-
Thanks for all the information Jeannie.
With William Bussell (father to James)....wouldn't the christening of William in 1708 be too early?
As mentioned, I have him listed as born c 1723 to a John and Maria
What relation is James Bussell to your husband?
Happy Easter
Regards

Hi Cazza,
Just spent a couple of hours going through my early Bussell notes It did seem to me that William born in SC in 1708 made him a liitle older for his marriage to Ruth (38!), but according to the marriage register of East Stoke William is 'of Stourton Caundle' and Ruth 'of Cheselbourne'. Why they married in East Stoke is a mystery, it may also be a possibility that it was not his first marriage. James' will is interesting,he obviously had a soft spot for daughter Maria, she later married James Cook in 1817. They are my husbands direct ancestors. The will didn't go through probate until 1821 although he died in 1813.
According to my family tree program, James was my husbands 4th gt grandfather...
I have a transcript of his will but it is in Word so I can't attach it - any ideas? I also found some of your Christopher's when I Googled 'Bussell + Dewlish', a different line to yours I think!
Happy Easter to you - the weather here is cold again, no sun today. fingers crossed for tomorrow....
Kindest regards - Jean

Hi Jean
I have sent you a pm containing my email address.
The Christophers that you found are most probably mine as the two main branches of Christophers in my tree are linked through cousins marrying (thoroughly confusing as you can imagine as many of them have the same names, thank goodness for dates of birth lol). My Great Grandmother was born in Dewlish.
There are also many, many Christophers that are linked througout Dorset through more than one set of cousins marrying. Of course, many of the Christophers are also cousins to your husband.
Don't you just love genealogy!
Cheers

Hi Jean,
Saw your post about Mary Bussel christened 20 Jun 1780 in Cheselbourne. Do you know if this is the Mary Bussell who married Samuel Stokes? They lived in Stourton Caundle and Mary died in 1846. They are my gggg grandparents and I'm researching the family. One of their sons emigrated to the US in 1855 and died shortly after - I am his descendant. I live in the NW U.S. in Oregon. It would be wonderful to find out more about the Bussells.
I hope you see this. Thanks. Oregonrose

I have a Rebecca Bussell baptised 1790 parents William and Elizabeth. I think this William was married to Elizabeth Weeks. Rebecca married John Holland. I would appreciate any more info you have on Rebecca.
Thanks
Nicola
