Title: William COOPER - Langham
Post by: cavvy on Wednesday 04 January 06 23:00 GMT (UK)
i am looking for William Cooper b c1803 Langham Suffolk.

He married Harriet Canham 1833 at South Cove. I have found him on the 1861-1881 census in South Cove but i am unable to find his birth.

i have checked the LDS but im not sure what district Langham would come under in 1803.

any help would be appreciated. :o

Hi Cavvy

not able to help with the birth record  :( - but thought you would like the 1851 Census entry, viz:

HO107/1803 folio 872 p10
Parish of South Cove
No. on schedule 27

William Cooper / head/ Mar / 51 / Ag Lab / Unknown
Harriet Cooper /wife / Mar / 44/ / Suffolk Ipswich
Mary Cooper /dau / / 11 / / Suffolk South Cove

William's place of birth is clearly written as unknown in this census.

I looked him up in the 1861, 71 & 81 censuses and note that in these he is listed as born in Langham (in 61 & 71) and Glenham in 81!!!
I have also noted some variation in his age (51, 55, 68 & 79 years in the censuses 1851 to 1881).
Not quite sure what I'm trying to say - other than need to check the parish records across quite a few years and at Glenham as well as Langham....

sorry I couldn't be more help
Rosemary :o

my other thought is - after experiencing this myself - are you sure that it is the same William Cooper in all the censuses?

I suppose I am most suspicious of the 1871 (which most clearly gives his place of birth as Langham), where his wife is now Hannah rather than Harriet. Have you shown he was widowed & remarried? I guess it could also be a transcription error by the enumerator!

Also - do you know how far apart Langham (bp 1861 & 1871) & Glenham (bp 1881) are - are they close enough that its reasonable for someone to give these as alternatives for place of birth?

what do you think?

i believe the Hannah on the census is a transcription error as Hannah 1856 who is living with them is Harriets dau Hannah b1836 who is my gggrandmother.

i have located Langham but im not sure where Glenham is.

Ill check to see where it is.

Many thanks for your help.
