My father was born in Stockton on Tees in 1918, the address on his birth certificate is Headlam Street, in the Parish of St. James Municipal Ward of Tilery.
He would of been baptised in the local Roman Catholic Church. My question is could anyone let me know where exactly Headlam Street is or indeed if it still exists? and the name of the nearest Catholic Church and school .
Thanks for any help.

Until anyone more local catches up with this post, I can telll you that there is a Headlam Rd and a Headlam Court in the Tilery district of Stockton, but this area has been redeveloped in recent years.
It looks as though the nearest RC church now, is St Mary's, Major Street (details from the RC diocese of Hexham and Newcastle) though whether it was in 1918 is another matter.
Hope this helps in the meantime,

Thank you Ruthie for your reply to my post, I shall certainly check out the church you mentioned to see if I have any luck. I wonder if it was a misprint on his certificate in regards to Headlam Street? anyway I shall keep looking. I am trying to find out when exactly my father and his family left Stockton and arrived in Jarrow, Co Durham.
I am having no luck in tracing the beginning of my family in Ireland so I though I would try a different track and start tracing my fathers childhood in Stockton and Jarrow.

Happy New Year

I would think Headlam Street is right and that perhaps Headlam Court was a new development on or near the original.
Perhaps someone from Stockton could let us know? Myself, I'm looking for an Albert Place where apparently my gggrandfather had a newsagents. Lon gone I suspect

St James Church was in Portrack Lane and it was demolished around the 1960s. The cross that was hanging from the roof is now in Wolsingham Catholic Church. The church now used for that area is St Mary's RC in Stockton.Headlam st was just north of St James church in Tiler.

Re Stockton. Of course should have read Tilery.

Adam,
Welcome to Rootschat!! I hope you find it an enriching experience!! Are you local to Stockton?

Hello Ruthie. I was born in Thornaby in 1937(sometimes called South Stockton) but lived in Norton for twenty five years before moving away.
Adam

I'm related to the Russells of John Russell and Sons grocers who had a cash and carry warehouse on Portrack Lane (sadly no more)but their business started in Thornaby - Caledonia Street. I think that's long gone too. I'm in Wales now and trying to do research 'long distance'
Best wishes,

Thanks so much for your reply about Headlam Street, and St. James Church, you have given me some of the information I was searching for so I can carry on with my research, on my Larkin family.
Kind regards

Hi Malshie, I live in Norton which is not far from Tilery, Headlam Street was in Tilery but has been demolished,
The nearest catholic church was St mary's RC on Major Street, which is still there, the catholic school was next door and it was also called St Mary's(I went there myself) Middlesbrough Archives hold the christening records for St Mary's church, if you can give them a ring they will do you a look-up, if you can't let me know and I will book a microfilm machine and do you a look-up

Hi All
I dont know if this is good or bad news

I think you may find the St Mary records at the Cleveland archives or is that Teeside
Archives. Adamand
-
Thank you to Slaw, The Vicars Wife and Admand in reply to my post. Slaw that is very kind of you to offer a `look-up` for a baptism for me. Although, it seems to be I have to search Cleveland Archives or Teeside Archives, am I able to do this on line would anyone know?
Pity about Headlam Street, no wonder I could not find it on any maps!
With regard to St. Mary`s School would any record of pupils names be kept, going back to 1920`s?
Kind regards
Malshie

Hello Malshie. If you go to the stockton picture site. http://picture.stockton.gov.uk/ and type in Tilery you will see an aerial view for Tilery.
As you will know Headlam street was just off Tilery rd. It is on the top left of the picture. It is not the best of pictures for identifying the street but it at least gives you an idea what the area was like. Adamand

Hi Adamand
Thanks for your reply, I shall enjoy looking at this site.

Hi everyone, new to all of this, I'm trying to find descendent's of George Scott and charlottee(no last name) George was born in 1795, they had 6 childrenIam really wanting to know how many Scott's are still living in stockton -on-tees. thanks sharpy :D
-
Hello Malshie
I realise your posts regarding St Mary's Church and Headlam Street Stockton are quite old but I have only just come across them. In case you are still searching:
St Mary's Church was founded in 1842 and according to the priest last weekend (Feb 2011) the parish registers are now held in Exchange House Middlesbrough. (My grandparents were married there in 1919).
I have an 1899 and 1970 maps of the area and Headlam Street is in an area called St Anne's Hill running between Tilery Road and Talbot Street, parallel (to the east) of Norton Road. as the previous posts have mentioned this area was demolished in the late 1970s during the Portrack Lane clearance and is now in an area close to Routledge Road off the A139.
Hope this helps.
Amanda :)

Hello Amanda
Thank you so much for your recent reply on Stockton on Tees.
Yes I am still doing my research into my father's family. That was kind of you to have a look on the old map for me. I did look on the internet myself to see if I could find Headlam Street, but drew a blank. So your finding is much appreciated.
I had been in touch with Middlesbrough Archives in search of School records but drew a blank once again. Very difficult at times searching for information but wonderful when you add a few "branches" to the tree.
Thanks once again

Hi again Malshie
I have no knowledge of the school based around St Mary' s Church but if you do find out any info please let me know. My maternal grandmother was born at 1 Joseph Street (on the northern side of Portrack Lane, now demolished) in the late 1890s and may have attended the Roman Catholic school before she was sent off to live with her grandparents in Tyrone Ireland. She returned to Joseph Street when she was in her teens and was married at St Mary's in 1919.
I am fascinated with this area and visit it whenever I have the chance to travel north (I am now based in Surrey). The area was a mixture of Welsh and Irish who migrated to the area to work in the steel mills that existed between Portrack Lane and the current site of the Tees Barrage.
Have you tried tracing any of your Irish family in the on line 1901 and 1911 Irish census?
Amanda :)
-
I attended St Mary's School Major Strteet Stockton, The school was infants(boys and girls)Juniors(boys and girls) Senior school was all girls, I left in 1958/59. The christinings for St Mary's church are held at Teesside Archives, I have viewed them myself on several occassions.
Sheila

Hello Amanda
I am afraid I really have no information on the area in question other than the name of the road were my grandparents lived between 1913 and 1939,
i.e. 68 Headlam Street. The family name was Larkin and my Grandfather Patrick worked in the Iron Industry.
I would of liked to have found out where my father went to school.
I had been in touch with Teesside Archives as they hold school attendance records. I was interested in St. Mary's RC School as I thought this would of been the nearest school to where they lived.
They found no record of my father or his two sisters who were born in 1918, 1916 and 1914. So I really have no idea where they attended school or infact any information of their life in Stockton on Tees. The only thing is my Grandmother was a school board teacher so maybe they were home schooled, but I don't remember my dad having mentioned this when he was alive.
The family then moved to South Shields where the rest is history so to speak!
My Larkin family had came over from Ireland in the 1870's so although I have looked at the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census thanks, I have made no connections at this present time.
If I do across come across anything on Stockton I will certainly let you know.
Best of luck with your own research.

Their was a infant and Junior school in Tilery, the school is now amalgamated with what was Portrack primary school, also at Portrack was the catholic primary school called Carlisle Memorial, I attended it before going to St.Mary's, the Archives has some attendance books for this school, I have had a look through them myself,I'm sure the archives would do you a look up or at least tell you what years they cover.
Sheila
-
Hi Slaw
Were these schools Roman Catholic, C of E or Welsh Baptists? The area would have been quite mixed when Malshie's father and my grandmother were at school. I would be looking for an RC primary school between 1900 and 1910.
Amanda :)
-
Carlisle Memorial was a catholic school, it was very small, you left when you where 7 to go to St Mary's, Tilery and Portrack school were C.of E. My mother was born 1914 and went to Carlisle memorial school. There was a catholic church next to the school called Sacred Heart, it it still there but is now a community centre.
Sheila
-
Malshie, have yopu asked the Archives to have a look for the christenings of your family? if they where catholic the would certainly have been christened at St.Marys.
Sheila
-
Morning Sheila thank you for your reply. I didn't know about Carlisle Memorial School. I wonder if that is where my dad Joseph who was born in 1918 attended.
Certainly looks like a possibility.
Dad's sister Theresa was born in 1914 maybe she and your mum new each other as little girls.
I have been in touch with someone at the archives on two occasions but they couldn't find any school record. I am sure the person I emailed had looked at another school in the area but drew a blank. The archivist did mention they didn't have records for all the local schools.
I think the only way is too spend time looking for myself. maybe I will visit Stockton in the summer.
I did know all of their dates of birth, so I didn't think of looking at Baptism records. Maybe I should as it would be good to know who were the sponsers at their Baptisms.
Thanks again

Hello Malshie, If you send me all the details of your family I will go to the Archives and have a look, if your family where not catholic, they most certainly would have been christened at St.James.
My daughter is going into hospital tomorrow to have her second baby, so all being well I should get to the archives next week.
Sheila
-
Hi Sheila
Thank you that is a very kind offer to visit the archives for me. I live down South so have only visited Stockton once on my travels to Newcastle.
The details are
Joseph R larkin born 22nd February 1918
Theresa larkin born 16 December 1915
Margaret Larkin born 7 October 1913
The family are roman catholic.
Sadly all deceased.
The only address I have is 68 Headlam Street
Weather this was their only address I really have no idea.
How lovely that you are about to become a Grandma hope it all goes well.
Thank you again but please there is no rush I expect you shall be rather busy very shortly.

Hi Malshie, will let you know if I find anything.

Hi Malshie, managed to get an hour at Teesside Archives today, found the following; St.Marys R.C.Church Stockton on Tees;
Baptism; Joseph Redmond Larkin born 22/2/1918 baptised 10/4/1918 father Patrick Larkin mother Frances Larkin(nee Browne) Address 68 Headlam Street,
Godmother Maria Betts
Next to the baptism it says 17th Jan 1926 Ipse confirmatus in ecclest St.Bedow apud Jarrow. I could'nt find out what this meant, I wonder if it was his Holy Communion? Maybe someone on Rootschat can translate it.
I will be going back next week, so will have a look for the girls
Sheila
(I now have a granddaughtert)
-
Hello Sheila
Congratulations on the birth of your Granddaughter how lovely you must be so pleased hope your daughter is well.
Thank you so very much it is really kind of you to take the trouble to look up information. (I know from experience it is not always as easy as it sounds to do look ups).
Yes that is my dad and his parents. 17th January yes could be his communion date that would be about right as normally around the age of seven/eight when you make it.
Looks like they could of returned to Jarrow St Bedes Church to do it, wonder why?
That is a good idea to ask on rootschat for a translation.
It is good to know he was baptised at St Mary's, as I took a lovely picture of the church when we visited Stockton early last year.
Again that would be so kind if you could find out about his sisters. just to see if they were back in Jarrow and note the name of their sponsor.
Thanks again
Kindest regards
malshie

Hello Sheila and Malshie
I think the Latin can be translated as "He himself has been confirmed in the church of Jarrow with St.Bedow". Does this make any sense?
Sheila, if you are doing another trip to the archives and it is not too much to ask, would you kindly look up a marriage which took place in St Mary's Church between Margaret Nicholas and James McGill between 1891 and 1895?
These are my great grandparents. I cannot find any GRO indexes, they must have been mislaid in the transcriptions but I am sure they were married at St Mary's. They were single in the 1891 census and my grandmother was born in 1895; I suspect the marriage took place in 1891-1894.
It would be really helpful as I have been trying to locate this marriage for ten years and I have almost given up.almost.
Thank you.
Amanda :)
-
Hello Amanda, sorry i missed your message, have been to the Archives today, but may go again tomorrow, so will note details of the marriage and take it with me.
-
Hi Malshie, have been to the archives today, found a christening for Teresa Larkin born 16/12/1915 christened 26th Dec 1915, Godmother Margaret Brown, it states next to her name sames as Josephs, 17th Jan 1926 Ipse confitmatas est ecclest St. Bedow apud Jarrow, did not find a christening for Margaret Larkin. Just as a matter of interest I noted a christening for Maria Betts born 21/6/1915 christened 11/7/1915 of 66 headlam Street mother Maria Betts(godmother of Joseph) Godparents were James Larkin and Julia Larkin(just thought they may be related to you.
Also looked at some documents for the school I mentioned ,Carlisle Memorial,
It opened 1900 and closed 1958. They do have books with names of children, when they started the school and when they left, they went on to St.Mary's when they were 7 or 8. Will go back tomorrow and have a browse through them, I may find your family.
Sheila
-
Thank you Sheila, this is very kind of you. I do hope you are successful it will be the final jigsaw piece in my puzzle of my family who lived in the Portrack area. Fingers crossed!
Amanda :)
-
Hello Amanda, Would you like your grandmothers christening? The marriages and christenings are on the same reel. is your grandmother Mary Ann McGill born Dec. qtr 1896 Stockton?
-
Wow that would be wonderful Sheila. ;D ;D ;D
I have two dates for her, the GRO index you have referred to and 27th August 1895. I am unsure which year she was born, there are two references but only one Mary Ann McGill, the Christening would sort that issue out too!
There were two other children born to that marriage: James McGill born Dec quarter 1894 who died three months later and buried in the children's public grave in Oxbridge Lane Cemetery and Catherine Josephine McGill born June 1899. It would be fantastic to know who were the godparents. James McGill the father died a few months later in October 1899....such tragedy in a few years.
Thank you so much.
Amanda :)

Morning Sheila
You are a star, thank you very much for your help you have filled in a couple of gaps in my "family tree".
My dad lived at number 66 Headlam Street, so looks like the Betts family were their neighbours. So thanks for that piece of information.
God parents to Maria Betts that is interesting James and Julia Larkin, I will have to do a little bit of digging there.
Didn't know my aunt Teresa's exact date of birth, so thanks for that.
Strange that my other aunt Madge (Margaret) Larkin wasn't recorded.
I really look forward to hearing about Carlisle Memorial School, fingers crossed you are able to find my dad on their school records.
Interesting that dad and his sister were back in Jarrow in 1926. I understood that you made your Communion in the place where you attended school.
Thanks again Sheila hope you have a good day.
regards
malshie

Hello Malshie, Sorry I could'nt find anything for your father at Carlisle memorial school, also had a second look for Margaret Larkins christening nothing at all, It seems funny not to have christened the eldest daughter. The records for St.Mary's school did'nt start un till 1946, so no help at all. They had records for Tilery School from right dates for your family, do you think they may have gone to this school? it would have been just around the corner from where they lived, if you think their is any possibilty they might have attended Tilery School, I will have a look next time i go to the Archives. If there is anything else I can help you with please let me know.
Sheila
-
Hello Amanda, Sorry I could not find anything on your family in the St.Mary's records, no marriage or christenings for the children, I looked for the death of James Mcgill in the St.Mary's records, but he appears not to have had a catholic burial. if you would like me to search further do send me some details of this family, 1901 census and info from any ceritiicates you may have.
Sheila
-
Thank you for your help Sheila. I will send you a message with further details as we seem to have taken over this thread! (Give me some time to put the details together). Thanks so much for your efforts so far.
Amanda :)

Amanda, I got your personal message and tried to reply but it says your e.mail address is wrong.

Hello Sheila
Thank you so much for looking at the Carlisle Memorial school records for me. Well that is a mystery, no sign of him being at that school. I really thought I had, well you had, solved the puzzle for me.
If it's alright with you Sheila could I take you up on your kind offer to look at Tillery School records for me.
No record of my aunts Baptism record either. I suppose she could of been baptised back in Jarrow, St. Bedes.
The school seems more of a mystery to me, they must of been schooled, somewhere, but where!
Have a good weekend
Thanks again for your help
Best Wishes

Hi Sheila

if you are still wondering where exactly headlam street is, i have found it on old-maps.co.uk the 1895 map shows healam street as being what we know now as tilery way on google maps, i have counted the houses from the old map and can tell you that number 66 was opposite a school, now i have no idea what denomination of school it was, hope that helps a little
-
It would be Tilery primary School, that was the only school at Tilery.
-
Thank you DawnKaren, I do appreciate any help or direction I can get with regard to my Dads family. I will have a look at the map to see Headlam Street, pity there are no photos about. Thank you for your input, I really enjoy receiving information on the area as it all adds to my family history.

i wouldnt be to sure about the lack of photos have you tried contacting stockton library? i know that they have a section that deals with family history, and they are very helpful. perhaps they could offer you something?

Hi Mandy!!!!!!!!!!
Just settled down to yet another stint on 'Ancestry dot co dot etc', Googled: 1,Joseph Street, Stockton, 1919 & :o ........ up you popped!
I've only been looking since February this year but have managed to get back to 1720 on Erica's partner's side, 1695 on Tony's side, and 1682 on my mam's side. The Wilkinsons proved a bit harder and am only back to John b.1792 with Mary b.1806 and Edward Nixon b.1826 with Jane b.1843. I've been looking through your postings on this site (for about an hour until I plucked up the courage to sign on) and am slightly reassured you're having as much difficulty as I am with Grandma Wilkinson 'cos I thought I was going mad with it all! I have photos of us being bridesmaids at Ray&Mary's wedding, in fact I have photos of everyone I need except your mam & dad. If you see this, could you let me know if we can hook up? (Sorry but I lost your e-mail address after Peta's 50th)
-
Wow!!!! Welcome to RootsChat and I am so glad you have found me. I have sent you a message containing my contact details.
Can't wait to hear from you.
