William Walton had farm called Glebe farm at Trimdon until at least mid 1800's by 1881 he was farm labourer and the family legend is it was gambled away.Want to find out about farm was it his or inherited through wife Elizabeth Brown from her father Miles Brown?Anything at all would be useful.
Any ideas where I can start? I live on the south coast so can't visit record offices etc.
Appreciate any help. x :-\

Ps just found out a Miles Brown (1785)also Elizabeths brother and a land propietor at least up to 1851 census so could be 2 farms I'm looking for! xx

Angie,
There are Waltons still farming in the area.
I know an Alf Walton who has a farm at Low Hardwick (at the back of Hardwick Park) just outside of Sedgefield. He stopped farming a few years ago, and now runs an outdoor quad bike track on the land.
Have you seen this site, http://www.fishburn.org.uk ?
It lists residents in the area over a number of years, I see by 1914 the farm was in the hands of a John Todd.
I know most of the farms in the Trimdon area and can't place Glebe Farm, have you located it on any maps?
I wonder if it was actually in Fishburn on the site where Glebe House Old Folks Home was built?

Thanks for that info
The 1851 census lists his address as just trimdon
'farmer of glebe farm' I think the land was substantial.Apparently they also owned a lot of property in Trimdon . even in my g grandas day 1875 - 1950 he collected rents on property he still owned in the area but my mum thought it was Staindrop area. ?
by 1861 he has only 6 acres and is retired .His son took over but by 1881 he too is listed as farm labourer - how the mighty fall! the talk in the family is of gambling etc?
His wife Elizabeth Brown also came from farming families in the area. Her father and brother both Miles Brown are listed as land propietors and farmer in all census info.Address in 1841 Monk Hesleden,Slaitley(?)They had monogramed stuff my mum tells me MBM she thought Miles Brown Walton? There were very old photos (men dressed up on horses etc)unfortunately all this dissappeared when my nan died.
The farms definately go back into the 1700's but I'm still looking into that.Doesn't help I live on the south coast !

Angie,
I've sent you a PM on Glebe Farm.
I've scoured the Ordnance Survey large scale maps around Trimdon and there is no sign of a Glebe Farm now.
I'll keep trying.
-
As promised I've checked with a few 'older' contacts in Trimdon Village and none have heard of Glebe Farm.
The only other suggestion I have for you is to try to make contact with the local history group in Trimdon.
They are called 'Trimdon Past and Present' and I believe you can contact them via the Local Library at Church Road, Trimdon Village.
Regards
Gerry

Have you thought of looking for wills? If they had land they almost certainly left wills. Many wills prior to 1858 are online on the A2A site or http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
and those after 1858 are held at the Principal Probate Registry in London but I am sure local places will have the index. I know it is on fiche at the Family Record Centre in London so it may well be at your nearest archive office or library too.
Worth a try

Angie,
I had a call today from an old lady in Trimdon.
She remembers that Glebe House Farm was on the land to the east side of what is now Trimdon Labour Club (where Tony Blair goes on election night), in Front Street Trimdon Village.
The farm was knocked down she believes late 1930's or early 1940's.
A couple of bungalows now stand on the land.

Hi Gerry
Thanks very much for that info.Have found out that in 1871 william Walton was living with his brother John on the land listed just as Trimdon village farming around 230 acres between them.Goodness knows what thay did with it by 1881 ??!! But I'm one step closer. His uncle Miles Brown was a 'land propieter'in Monk Hesleden so between them they did alright.I might have more luck with that one as a James Brown(Miles son) still had a farm in the late 1800's.
Once again your help is much appreciated. :-*

Hi
I have the local book 'From Fissebourne to Fishburn' and there was a farm called Glebe Farm on the site of the old residential home 'Glebe House'
It was farmed by John Todd and his two sisters.
hope this is of some help ???
-
Hi many thanks for that.must have 'lost' the farm and all the land between 1871 and 1881. Is there any other info about it at all ? any snippets help with the puzzle.
kind regards
Angie :)

Hi
I am new to the site and have just found your enquiry.
You may have allready recieved answers on this subject, but if not I hope ther following helps
Glebe Farm was at fishburn where the old folks home was . I used to play on the farm wall when at school at fishburn from 1953 to58,
I have lived in Trmdon since 1953 and have no recollection of a farm where it is suggested to have been ,(near the club)But I will enquire further,.
On the subect of Miles Brown.
There is a grave stone in the village churchyard with the name of Miles Brown died around 1857? I can take a photo and send it if you are still interested,I pass it twice

Hi Joe, many thanks for your response. I drew a blank on this so any information is gratefully received and may be a vital piece of the jigsaw. Glebe it seems is a fairly common name for a farm which complicates matters but an elderly lady from Trimdon remembered a Glebe farm being knocked down before the war on the front street area. The census information over many years consistently states Trimdon every time so I'm not sure about Fishburn. A photo of the grave would be fantastic as the dates could well fit and very kind of you to offer.I would love to make a trip up some time to see if there are any Waltons or Brown Waltons in that grave yard! :) I would be happy to send you my personal email or mobile. very many thanks for your help.

Hi
My brother in law used knock around with the young lad David refern, who lived at the farm/smallholding in question in the late 40s early 5os, It was then owned by redferns or relations, who I believe have the the milk business in the village
He can remember the place before it was demolished and the present bungalow was built,
he also worked for Edgar Tinkler who had the farm almost opposite the bungalow,.and had most of the land around trimdon.
Most of the land around trimdon was and still is I believe owned by Captain Beckworth,( Beckworth Estates)and let out to farmers. If you let me have your email address, I will have a browse round the churchyard to check on the names mention, also to send you a picture.
Another thing that may be of interest to you is ,a lot of folks from the trimdon area were buried Kelloe I belive
Carters farm opposite the church was demolished in the late 60s to make way for the presenent old folks home,This was a great pity and would never have been allowed today as it was a lovely old medievil type building.

Hi
As I promised I have been making more inquires about the farm.
After talking to the church warden today.who was born and bred here. mid 1930s.He has definitly confirmed that the farm in question was called GLEBE FARM, which was at the time run by the REDFERN family
joe
ps hope this helps

brilliant!! thank you very much you're a star :) At least I now know I'm not barking up the wrong tree! :P and this is almost certainly the right farm. Looking at the census info the Waltons had the farm from the early 19th century and possibly before up to 1871-1881. Not sure what happened but they stayed in Trimdon for many years after. The Browns continued to farm in the area. I will message you my email. all the best Angela

Hi
just another thought, there is some old photos of the village on the trimdon sitem I will check them to see if the farm is shown
