If anyone knows anything about the Davies family of Bryn Crug, I'd be more that grateful for anything that you might be able to pass on.
Edward Davies was born around 1792, in or near Bryn Crug. In 1813 he went into the Army and fought with the Coldstream Guards at Waterloo, being discharged from the Army in 1826,. He married twice and the second marriage produced (probably amongst others) my great grandfather Hugh Davies. Hugh married my great grandmother - Jane - in or close to the October quarter 1873. From that came my grandmother Ann Davies, who married my grandfather William Williams (who was a railway guard at the time) in October 1900. Hugh died in 1902 at the age of 50 and is buried in the same grave as my great grandmother in Towyn cemetery. Also in the same grave is Edward himself and also his mother who died around 1843 at the age of 91. William Williams later became a driver on the Cambrian Railway, and died in 1958, my grandmother having passed away of cancer in April 1940. Both are buried in the church of St John the Evangelist at Pool Quay Powys (known before as Montgomeryshire.
Hugh Davies is listed on the 1901 census at a public carrier, though before this he was an agricultural worker.
The family does seem to have stayed around the Towyn area for some generations, so it is likely that I have some living relatives in the area. So, if anyone does have any information of the family please contact me via the site. In turn, I'll pass on any details I have in my possession - which aren't too extensive at the moment.
Thanks to anyone who might be able to help re siblings of gt grandfather Hugh, and any of the famiy who might still be in the area.

I know it's some time since you posted this message, but on the offchance...
Do you know Towyn cemetery at all? Are you able to visit it? Towyn is the last known place I have for my gr-gr-grandfather (he was the local bobby in 1901). I'm having great difficulty tracing his birth, let alone his death! I was wondering if there were any ARTHUR burials in Towyn cemetery? I'm particularly interested in SEPHORAH JANE ARTHUR - she was born in 1873 and lived at home until at least 1901, but after that the trail has gone cold.
It's a long shot, I know, but just in case...any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I can't visit Towyn cemetery myself, but I know someone who has the MIs for there. Would you like me to ask him if he can help with your Arthurs?

I am thrilled!!!
George Henry Arthur was one of my great grandfather's older brothers. Their father, George, was the local bobby in 1901 - I don't know when he died.
I'm not sure where George W Arthur fits in, but as his birthplace is given as Glynceiriog, I think he is related to the same family as that's where they originated from. He could be a cousin to my great grandfather, who was incidentally also a housepainter! (Please tell your friend to keep hold of that piece of wood while I do some more investigations!)
I'll PM you with my address.
Many thanks

This is bonkers but...
The Arthur family are my grandfather's side- I have many pictures of George Arthur and his children, Hilda, Cledwyn and Enid. I hope I can get in touch with you, bel_jon, to give you all the info. I can also get a photo of George and his wife's grave on here if you like? ( I live in the area)

Amazed to get an email from RootsChat after all this time telling me about your post!
I'd be delighted to receive any info you have on the Arthurs. My family history research has been on the back-burner for some time now, due to lack of time, but it would be great to have more info.
Incidentally, I've recently found the house where my great great grandfather (George Arthur senior) farmed before he became a policeman. It's no longer a farm, the outbuildings having been converted for holiday lets - but it's in a fantastic spot above the Ceiriog valley.
Look forward to hearing from you and many thanks for your post!

Well, I wasn't sure if you'd reply seeing as it's so long since you last wrote. Wonderful!
George Arthur was the Pennal village bobby, and I'm pretty sure that this is where George Henry Arthur was born. George then married Betty and they moved to Tywyn, where they had three children: George Cledwyn (known as Cledwyn), Hilda and Enid. (all three now sadly deceased.) Betty was from a large family, and this is where my lot come in- she was an aunt of my grandfather's. Sounds a distant relative, I know, but the families were very close.
Enid married and moved to the Bala area.
Hilda had a full and wonderful life- I can remember her as an old lady when I was a child. She was a nurse at Gobowen hospital, and travelled widely in a time when single women didn't travel. She was a socialist and travelled to Russia and China, keeping detailed diaries. (they were left to my grandparents- I have read them.)She was a wonderful woman with a free spirit.
Cledwyn became a policeman and moved to Anglesey. He married Lydia. However, three months later there was a tragic accident and he died on the 28th of August 1941, aged 30. He drowned, along with ten other would-be rescuers, while making several attempts to rescue the three crew of an RAF bomber aircraft, which had crashed during a gale into the sea off Rhosneigr; he was in the second of four boats to put out, all of which capsized in the stormy seas. He was posthumously awarded the King's Commendation for Brave Conduct and the RNLI Bronze Medal
About five years ago, I became aware that Lydia, Cled's widow, was still alive and well and living near me. I popped over to say hello, and since then we've become the best of friends. She chats about Cled and his family no end, and decribes George as a quiet, thoughtful man. He was a great thinker, and it was he who influenced Hilda's politics- He was a communist. As a result of my chats with Lydia, and her memories of Cled as a funny, loving, mischevous character, I wrote a novel for children using him as the principal character. It's written in Welsh and has sold quite well! 8)
I didn't know any of this family history until I moved house eighteen months ago... To Pennal, where it all started.
Well! I hope that's enlightened you! As neither Cled, Hilda or Enid produced any children, I have taken to putting flowers on the graves etc as there is no-one else to do it... I'll try to post some pics when I get a chance.

Wow, that really is interesting stuff! Thank you so much for sharing it with me. :)
So, I think that means that my 'great-great-uncle' married your 'great-great-aunt' - which makes us very distant relatives ...
How nice to have met Lydia and find out more about the family. I wonder if Lydia remembers any of Cledwyn's uncles and aunts? There were a lot of them! I'd love to hear about Ellis (my great grandfather) and his/George Henry's sister, Sephorah - all I could find out about her was she was a dressmaker and was still living at home in 1901. I cannot find any record of her later marrying, or of her death, so am puzzled as to what happened to her.
Congratulations on the book! I'd love to read it, so do send me details (my Welsh is a little rusty, but I have friends whose first language is Welsh).
No rush for the photos but it would be good to get them sometime.
Many thanks

I'm only seeing your post now *Precipice*. We have a lot of photos of the Arthurs too, but if you happen to have some, I'd love it if you could email me with them... My grandfather loved that family so much and I'm sure he's love to see any photos.
We have a wonderful photo of George Henry Arthur on the wall... He's so distinguished and earnest. My twenty-month son points to it and says "George!" ;D

Oh my! Thank you so much! I know that face so well- It is Cledwyn, standing behind the row of houses he was brought up in with his sisters- Idris Villas, Tywyn.
I've just tried to post a photo of George on here, but it said that the file was too large... Not sure what I can do about that...
