Title: Coleorton Hall 1901 census look up
Post by: Kiwi Dave on Monday 02 January 06 05:11 GMT (UK)
Could someone please tell me who was at Coleorton Hall for the 1901 census, the main family and the servants.
FYI, in the 1881 census, the main family of Beaumonts were living in the Rectory and the servants were in the Hall Lodge. There was also the Hall Stables and Hall farm buildings.

Best Regards

Dave

Do you want the sort of information you gave? or fuller details to enable you to find the scan .......

In Corleorton Hall there was the main family of Davisthorpe, with daughters, granddaughter, visitor and servants and servants in the Laundry, the Gardeners Cottage, The Gardens, The Bottom Lodge and The Keeper's House.

Hello Mary, Love the Mona Lisa...

I was really after some background more than anything and the names of the inhabitants can help. The sort of information such as the number of servants, their names, ages and what their job was.  I could compare it to the 1881 (and 1891 censuses - why did I just think of that!) and get an idea of who was there for life, who was not, did they move up "the ladder", if they married one another, etc.  If you want to let me have them (with all due regard to the fact there may be a largish number of names), I would appreciate it.

My grandad worked at Coleorton Hall around 1910 before going off to WW1. (He ironed the newspapers and looked after the dog) I have a series of photos from his album of this era and I was asked to write an article which is why I wanted more info around this time period. The original "Lords of the Manor" the Beaumonts still owned the place in 1881 as I was able to access the mormons index and there was William Beaumont. However, by the time Grandad landed his job the family that featured in his album was the Abel Smith's. (At least Mrs Frances Abel Smith, no mention of a Mr AS in a wedding announcement of the daughter) As you have pointed out, there seems to have been an intervening family also.

1911 isnt avaliable for a few more years. Its a shame as I may have been able to identify a few of the unidentified people in his album if 1911 was available. There's one shot of a a man who looks like the butler but no name unfortunately as well as various others.

I have searched the internet but the main information is about the conversion of Coleorton Hall into apartments, not much history although what there is was interesting - Wordsworth et al. I thought I would try Rootschat as there didnt seem a Local History board where I could post a general enquiry about the Hall. If you would like to suggest another avenue for me please do so and thanks for your reply.

Regards

Dave

Unfortunately I'm not local and don't know Leicestershire at all, I was only assisting with a look up since I did manage to find it - not as easily as with names but still, I could have sent you off to the Government site and made you pay to download the two pages necessary  ;) but I was being nice.

So send me a pm with your email address for further information about the inhabitants.

My other suggestion is to post a query on the main Leicestershire board rather than a look up request and see if anybody comes up with any information for you, especially if you give a little bit of background information to say why you are looking.

It seems to have been turned into some very expensive 2 and 3 bedroom flats nowadays, if you have a spare half a million you could go and live there.  There is a picture of the main building if you click on one of the apartment links.

Also the kitchen garden has been "overgrown"

If you google you'll find a couple of sites, including The Cenotaph to Reynolds' Memory, Coleorton erected in the grounds of Coleorton Hall  Leicestershire, by the late Sir George Beaumont, Bt.

Dave,

I hope you are still getting emails from Rootschat.

I know this post is really old but I thought I might give it a shot.

My 3 x great grandfather was bailiff of Coleorton hall in 1911.

I wonder if he knew your Grandad?

Cheers Ted

Hello Ted

Yes, it was a surprise after so long but worth a shot alright. I expect they would have known one another as the dates seem spot on.
Now I have census info for 1911, I know he had left by that date  and although its a bit of guesswork, I reckon he was probably there between 1906 and 1910. I tried to attach a photo but couldnt see how to do it. If you know the ropes with Roots Chat and can send me a private email somehow, I'll email you a copy of the photos I have from grandad's album.

Best regards

Dave
