Title: 1841/1851 Census lookup - Jeffrey family Twizel(l)
Post by: ozchook on Saturday 31 December 05 04:31 GMT (UK)
I would appreciate any help in finding Nicholas JEFFREY b.1792, Twizel, who maried Martha RAE b.1804, Twizel, and family in the 1841/51 censuses. I obtained the names of children from familysearch.com (the 1st two births are questionable) as follows:
Margaret b.1815 Durham
Isabella b.1815 Twizel
Alexander b.1821 Twizel
Martha b.1822 Durham
James b.1826 Durham
Elizabeth J. b.1828 Durham
Nicholas b.1828 Twizel
William b.1830 Twizel
Robert b.1833 Twizel

I'm interested especially in place(s) of residence and occupations. Thanking you in anticipation. Regards, Irene

Hello Ozchook

This is a start anyway.... On the 1851:

James JEFFREY, Head, M, 25, Carpenter?, Northumberland Twizel
Rachel, Wife, M, 24, [no oc], Northumberland Norham
Agness, 2, Northumberland Twizel Cartte?
Nilader, 6months, Northumberland Harpenidge?

Sorry it is very hard to read, but place looks like Newharprning? Perhaps someone else could try to read it for us?

Hi Irene and Angelfish

I agree - not one of the better pages to read !

I think the placename is New Harper Ridge about 5 miles South West of Norham.

I read the birthplace of Agnes as Twisel Castle and the name of the 6 month old son as Nicholas.

Hello AngelFish and Helen K, Thank you again for all you have done to help me compile this branch, and I am now beginning to piece together this very confusing jigsaw puzzle. To complete this topic, a little story for anyone interested. Nicholas Jeffrey b.1828 and his brother Robert b.1833 in Twizel both came to  Eaglehawk in the goldfields, Victoria, Australia and made their fortunes. Nicholas who was a builder invested well with gold mine shares and built a swish house he called 'Twizel', now called 'Mervalen' and Heritage listed. Brother Robert remained a builder and married Emma Louisa Mansfield, daughter of William, a convict. Her grandparents, Elizabeth Cole and James Tucker were 1st and 2nd Fleet convicts. In the words of my mother in law, 20 years ago, 'she was a lady of leisure - servants and all'. Sincere thanks, Irene

Hi Irene

A nice success story - and from fairly humble beginnings.

I often wonder how many of these emigrants who make their fortune use their wealth to visit their roots.

Do you know if Nicholas or Robert came back home for a visit ?

Hi Irene,

I know your head must be buzzing, and you will be busy sorting all the information, but you might like to look at http://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/Cornhill-on-Tweed.htm where Alexander Jeffrey and a later Nicholas Jeffrey are both mentioned in Directories.

Hi Helen and Myra, Helen, we know almost nothing about Nicholas and Robert, apart from whom they married and (most of) their children, and where the Jeffreys are buried. My next move will be to contact Bendigo genie groups. Eaglehawk, where they lived,  is now a suburb of Bendigo. It's 100 miles from where I live in Melbourne, so a trip up there would be worthwhile. I don't know if the brothers returned to Northumberland, but I hope they shared their wealth with their family, especially their widowed mother.
Myra, I have just been on to that wonderful website, and had such fun. I saw not only the directory entries but a couple of Jeffrey entries in the school records, and I had a long look at the lovely old photographs. Thank you both again. Regards, Irene

Hi Irene,
Our family are direct decendants of Nicholas Jeffrey, We have information given to the family by Aunt Martha,Nicholas Jeffrey's
sister to Nellie Bold , William Jeffrey's sister.
Nicholas Jeffrey came to Australia as a young man in the 1850's made his fortune and retired at the age of 36. He went for a trip to Scotland to see his mother and settled her comfortably for the rest of her life two nieces were left in charge and they were to get the house when she died. He then returned to
Eaglehawk Bendigo building shops and owning a good part of the main street, He was director on a number of mines New Moon & South New Moon and died in his 71st year about 1899 of pneumonia.

Hi westaussies and welcome to rootschat. Thank you for that very interesting piece of information about Nicholas. Would you please confirm that this information is relative to your Nicholas: Nicholas b.1828 married Isabel Raggett Rawle in Eaglehawk on 17 Oct 1865; died 12 June 1898 in Eaglehawk; their son Nicholas was born at Nerring in 1877?
We have another Nerring birth (not for the Jeffreys) and I am wondering if you know the significance of that town; it's near Beaufort between Ballarat and Ararat in Victoria. I am presuming it was a goldmining town. Do you know what Nicholas was doing there?
Thank you in anticipation; regards Irene.

HI Irene,
The information is exactly as we have it,the only difference is he died 12th July 1898 instead of June. We also have his son Nicholas as being born 15th Dec 1875 in Eaglehawk. His brother william rawle was born on the 6th of Sept 1877 he married Daisy Ethel Webb in Claremont Western Australia which is my father in laws parents. I do not have any information on Nerring.

Hi Ozchook

I came across the Jeffrey family when looking for Russels in Twizel - may be related to me but haven't sorted that out.  However,  Lots of Jeffrey's can be found by going into the Genuki site, England, Northumberland, Towns & Parishes, Norham, Cemeteries - Mike Simpson's Norham St Cuthberts Monumental Inscriptions - lots of entries which will certainly keep you busy for awhile.

Forgive me for throwing in a couple of georgraphic snippets into this Chat.

I noticed those Jeffrey births/baptisms from "familysearch" showing places Twizel and Durham.

The quirk is that Durham was over 60 miles distant to the south. This area, including Twizel,  lay within the ancient parish of Norham, And although it lay within the bounds of the county of Northumberland, it belonged to the Bishops of Durham and was regarded as part of County Durham.

The "enclaves" of Norhamshire, Islandshire and Bedlingtonshire, were collectively referred to as "North Durham".

Folk born in these areas were recorded as Durham-born, not Northumberland-born. For the 1801-1841 census, these areas are enumerated as County Durham, not as part as Northumberland.

Conveniently these enclaves reverted to the county of Northumberland in 1844. And from1851, censuses were enumerated as Northumberland.

_____________________________________________

In Old English,  "twisla" was name for land that lay within a river fork. Twizel (once Twysill) lies in the junction where the River Till joins the River Tweed. (Haltwhistle in south-west Northumberland is similar example.

Michael - Thank you for those enlightening snippets; I wasn't aware of such facts and have taken notes.

Sue - My husband is related to Robert b.1833
Robert Jeffrey married Emma Louisa Mansfield, daughter and 16th child of William Mansfield, a convict who ended up doing very well for himself at Granton, Tasmania.
Emma did well too, as her husband Robert was monied, and they lived in Eaglehawk, Victoria, Oz.
Their son James Mansfield Jeffrey  was my mother in law's father.
Good luck with your research.

Irene

Thanks Irene, Robert was the brother of my great great grandfather James Jeffrey b.1826 he married Rachel Briggs ( whose family appear on the same census sheet  in 1841. James and Rachels daughter Martha married my great grandfather John Brown. They had three living sons one of whom Nicholas was my mothers father. Incidently his oldest brother James married Margaret Ann Jeffrey who was the grand daughter og Alexander Robert and James oldest brother.
I am going up to Northumberland in a couple of weeks to do some more research. Regards Sue

Hi Sue, Do you know that there are Jeffrey graves in Norham, including Alex d. 1787, and Nicholas and Martha?
I am very grateful to Myra (Chatter) who traipsed over wet fields, dodging bulls, to get this information for me.

Hi Sue, At my library I looked up Robert and Nicholas in the Eaglehawk and District Pioneer Indexes. There are many entries for them concerning properties they owned, (and they had many, especially Nicholas, who retired at 36 - a millionaire), committees they were on, court appearances, and mentioned  a Pioneer Photo at the Eaglehawk Town Hall. I don't know if it is still on show, but worth checking out during a visit.
