Title: McKernans of Tullyballydonnell
Post by: niall on Thursday 29 December 05 23:28 GMT (UK)
I am new to family history research in Northern Ireland. I hope to visit the province soon and visit PRONI etc, but I'd appreciate some advice first on investigating my family history in Antrim. My grandfather, Joseph Henry McKernan, was born in 1909 - according to the birth certificate at Tullyballydonnell, Aghalee, in the parish of Magheralin, Lurgan. The address is puzzling, because the townland of Tullyballydonnell and Aghalee were in Antrim, but Magheralin and Lurgan are in Armagh. His father was Charles McKernan, his mother Susanna nee Totton (or Totten), of whom I know nothing more. I know that there are McKernons listed in the 1851 census in Tullyballydonnell. Can anyone shed light on the McKernans in this area (or the Tottens) or advise me on where I might best look next?

Hi Niall
Came across a few Belfast McKernans (including a Joseph) in some newsaper stories.

June 1894 Joseph McKernan of 10 Combermere Street, Joseph Totterton of 38 Eureka Street and J Ellison of 20 Outram Street were al  injured in an explosion at the City Gasworks.

Aug 1896 Dominick McKernan of 99 Hardinge Street was fined 5 shillings ro keeping pigs contrary to City Regulations.

Dec 1896 David McKernan of 99 Hardinge Street was fined 11 shillings for cruelty to a horse.

I have a townland map of the area, which shows Tullyballydonnell townland lies in the middle of a triangle between Aghalee, Lower Ballinderry and Upper Ballinderry.

I would not take any geographical notice of the "parish" you have mentioned.

Hi.      Magheralin was actually in County Down.

A very distant relative of mine has done extensive research on her TOTTEN / TOTTON family which are centred around the AGHALEE area.

Many totten's are buried locally.

I recall that there is a TOTTEN'S HILL very close to AGHALEE village.

A few TOTTEN's that I do have on my file:-

EDDIE TOTTEN (from Ballymacash, Lisburn), married circa 1802.

EDDIE TOTTEN had a son called JOSEPH TOTTEN (Born 26th Oct. 1915, & who died Nov. 1999)

JOSEPH TOTTEN had a total of 10 brothers & sisters.   He lived at Sandy Bay (at Lough Neagh) then AGHALEE village.

JOSEPH TOTTEN had a total of 6 children (1 of which has done much research on the TOTTEN family).

Many thanks. I've picked up a huge amount of information on the McKernans/McKernons and Tottens/Tottons since my first post, as I've now had the chance to visit Northern Ireland. I'm very probably related to the Tottens of Aghalee, though neither of the Joseph Tottens I have on file had 10 siblings.  Do you have more information?

Hello Niall,

Have you seen  Looking for Totten/Totton relations  (http://www.belfastforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,1741.msg20341.html#msg20341) on Belfast Forum? It's thought that family came from the Ballinderry-Glenavy area.
