My GGF John William James according to the family Bible is said to be from Dorset and was a Master Mariner. However I can not find a John James from Dorset born around that time. But I have found a Master Mariner in the Swansea Mariners web page who was a Master Mariner and was born in 1830 from St Ives, Cornwall England.
He also was a widower in 1881 when he married his second wife Elizabeth Ann Neck in 1881 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales when he was aboard the Richard Fisher. I do not know who his previous wife was or if he had other children.
According to the marriage certificate On Jan 3 of 1881 John James was 50 when married making his birth abt 1830.
His father was also a John James and according to the marriage certificate his profession was Coast Guard.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Clockmaker,
I thought I'd try tracing Elizabeth Neck, since it is a more unusual name.
Ancestry has a pedigree for her there, but it doesn't contain much more information about John James than you already have. Maybe you posted it! If not, you can access this through worldconnect at rootsweb.
Says he died July 1892 in St John's, Newfoundland.
Cheers,
Ros

Sue, what year is your census info? The 1851 has a John James, 50, fisherman, Silver St. Wife Ann, 50 and daughter Mary, 28. Could these be the same ones?
