in the St Madoes area.
Also another farm called Tofthill or Softhill in the same area.
-
Tofthill is easily found on both old and new maps:
Use http://www.streetmap.co.uk and search for Tofthill - choose the one in Perth & Kinross. CLick the link and it will have an arrow pointing to it on the OS map that then loads.
Then use http://www.old-maps.co.uk to see the area in the 19th century.
Use the gazeteer function - Perth & Kinross, St. Madoes and pan around until you find Tofthill.
Pepperknows is proving harder - the only one that has come to light so far is in Lanarkshire!

Success - found it on the old maps.
Use the gazeteer, go to Perth & Kinross, then choose Glencarse. Click the north arrow once and Pepperknowes appears near the north edge of the map. Pan and zoom in to see it better.
On the modern OS map it is not named, but I think it must be the buildings marked to the north west of Brigton just south of Glencarse Hill.

Excellent, thank you.

can I ask what your connection with pepperknowes is?
I am looking for connections to the Patullo family that lived there at one time. I have information that my GGGG Grand uncle James Patullo was born there ABT 1787. He married Agnes Craigie.
Does this fit into your own research.
By 1791 they had moved to Nethermains where Anne Patullo, my direct line descendant was born
I am looking to get further back than this. Their parents were George Patullo and Mary Hall who lived in the St Madoes area, but I can't find any links past them.
Does this ring any bells with you?
