I noticed your posting re the Lockwood surname and connection to Rudyard Kipling. I am trying to trace the Lockwood side of the family without much luck in either Canadian or English records. Do you have any more information on this family?
My grandmother, Bertha Emma Lockwood, was born in Barrow-in-Furness in 1886, almost certainly lived in Manchester, emigrating to Canada with her parents sometime before her marriage in about 1909. What is a bit unclear is the identity of her father. In one place he is listed as John Lockwood, birth date unknown, died ca. 1900 in Canada, married to Rebecca Halstead, also English, deceased in Canada in about 1958. (I'm sure of Rebecca's existence, but not of death date which seems rather late). Elsewhere Bertha Lockwood's father is listed as Thomas Crabtree Lockwood, but I am wondering if that wasn't her grandfather. My father's very sketchy hand-written family tree lists her grandfather as ? Lockwood, brother of Frances Lockwood and son of William of Lockwood of Cleveland. So my grandmother would appear to be either the daughter or granddaughter of a sibling of Joseph Kipling's spouse Frances.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Bertha Emma Lockwood was born on 12th February 1886 at 300 Rawlinson Street , Barrow in Furness. Her mother was Rebecca Lockwood, formerly Halstead and her father was Thomas Lockwood whose occupation was "Temperance Hotel Keeper". Details obtained from her Birth Certificate.
I have not found this familiy in the 1891 or 1901 census, so the family may have emigrated before the 1891 census. I do not have any further details of this family currently but I do not believe they are related to the Lockwood-Kipling family. If you have any more details of Thomas Lockwood i.e. age I may be able to find him in the 1881 census if he was in the UK.
Frances Lockwood had three brothers Ellis (b. abt.1799), John (b. abt. 1800) and William (b. abt. 1802). I have no more details of Ellis, William died in 1829 and John had 11 children, one of whom was Thomas Johnson Lockwood (b. abt. 1851) but I have details of this family and there is no Bertha.

A bit more information I dug up today out of the tree regarding FRANCES LOCKWOOD.1804-1886.
Described as the daughter of a builder and architect from Skelton in Cleveland *She married the Rev. Joseph Kipling from Lythe in Skelton Parish Church in Sept 1836. He was a member of what was then known as the Methodist Society, a growing movement much influenced by the travels and preaching in the locality, of John Wesley. In the marriage register he is described as Minister of Great Edstone, a village near Pickering Yorks.
Frances and Joseph Kipling had eight children, six of whom lived to be adults, two boys and four girls. After two years at Great Edstone the family moved to Horncastle, Lincs where they remained for three years; then on to Howden and Bridlington in the East Riding. There were other moves within the Northern Circuit including Pateley Bridge in the West Riding, as was customary for Methodist ministers.
Rev Joseph Kipling died at Skipton on Jan 19. 1862. His will was proved at under £600, he was described as formerly of Ulverston, Lancs.Frances continued to live in Skipton with her daughters who ran a small school. Frances died at Skipton in 1886.
As the large majority of William and Ruth Lockwood's children were daughters the Lockwood name was lost when they married , but in the next generation it was used extensively as a middle name. The most notable example being John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) the eldest son of Frances and Joseph Kipling, and the father of Rudyard Kipling.
