Hi Kris, Thank you for the reply, that has given me a very good insight to the family. I may call on you later for more assistance about the Henwood's of Padstow.

Have still been unable to find a marriage for Mary Jane & William Dexter, though their firstborn was in Plymouth, Devon.

As to Mary Jane and William Dexter. Looks like he died aged 56 in Jun 1872 Portsea 2b 251. Now with the first Child Mary Henwood Dexter born in Plymouth Dec 1/4 1864 5b 260 that mean you do not have a lot of years to search for the marriage which is quite handy. I see it is not listed on FreeBMD. You can search the entire GRO BMD images free of charge at ancestry, be sure to check right up to Williams death as the marriage may have taken place late.
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx
Select Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983 and search for a marriage quarter by quarter
Another thought....Looks like they were not together long, perhaps they planned to wed one day but never actually got around to it. William and Mary Jane moved to Portsea so realistically noone would have known if a marriage never took place. There appears to be a bit of a history of children born out of marriage in the family. Looks Like Mary Janes father may be suspect as illegitimate also with his alias Greene.
Good Luck.......Kris :)
-
Thanks Kris,
I did have death of William DEXTER, I already searched through ancestry for the marriage but as you surmise, they probably didn't bother...
Thanks for the tentative Hariot COCK, will do some more searching & get back to you,
Regards,
Cedric.

Hi
I am currently researching my Henwood family and may have linked into this same family your talking about. if my research is correct William Henwood is my 4x great grandfather. I have hopefully correctly traced through the censuses to John G Henwood.
From what i have found William Henwood had a son William, with his wife Harriet around 1850. (census 1861 that has been quoted here) The reason i am doubting my research is because i think i may have found William (the son of William) at his brother in laws house in 1871, just don't know the link to the in-law, does the name Blythe make sense to you? William (junior) may have met his wife there as that is where she is born, Derby. Her name (if i'm correct) is Elizabeth. I know i am correct in my 1901, 1891 and 1881 censuses!
Hopefully this makes sense to you because then maybe my research hasn't gone in the wrong direction!
Thanks, Cat

William Benjamin HENWOOD
Birth Reg. Dec 1850 St Columb M 9 75
1881 census:
William J & Elizabeth (b. Derby) plus children and a brother Thomas, 3 yrs younger at Woolwich, Kent.
I don't think this is right William, no younger brother to Wm senior & Harriet & brothers both gave Parr, Cornwall as birthplace.
More likely to be:
William 30, Mariner, Son-in-law to John & Hellen Giles, with wife Gertrude & kids, all b. St Columb Minor.
Best Regards,
Cedric.
-
Hi Cedric,
I think i may have wondered a little in the wrong direction, yet i do have a William Henwood in my 1901 census as being born in Parr, Cornwall. His wife Elizabeth was born in Derby, they had a son named Sidney Walter Henwood, does he come up in your Henwood tree at all?
I might need to start from the beginning, I get lost at that 1871 census, thanks anyway
cat.

All the HENWOOD's in my tree originated from Padstow (St Columb), John Greene HENWOOD was born in St Wenn & his wife Jane BRENTON in Little Petherick, hope this helps,
Regards,
Cedric.

Hi Cat,
Your William's father was a Coast Guard and so all over the place. Dorset in 1841, Cornwall in 1851 and Norfolk in 1861. Does explain the Elizabeth and Thomas from 1871 census so certainly the right family. St Blazey is Ecclesiastical parish of Par.

Hi Kris
Thank you so much for all of that, fits in perfectly, didn't know about St Blazey being a parish of Parr so would never have found all of that!
Thanks
cat.
-
Hi all
Par parish (Biscovey) was formed out of St Blazey parish in 1847
See www.genuki/big/eng/Cornwall?StBlazey/index
St Blazey parish still exists as a separate parish which works with the parishes of Par. Tywardreath, Lanlivery and Luxulyan at the present time

Hi Cat,
I've just come across this old post by googling Paragon Place Portland to see if it still existed. Thomas Henwood was my g-g-grandfather, and his son William was my g-grandfather. Sidney Walter was my grandmother's favourite brother.
I don't know how much you know about them four years on but I have been to the place in Norfolk where they lived, (I have photos) and I also have a photo of William and his eldest son, also William. Thomas won a medal for a shipwreck in Polkerris Bay, Cornwall, in 1853, and I have photos of that too, and of the former coastguard station.
I'd be interested to hear how their descendants got to New Zealand!
-
Hi Chris
It sounds as if you have done a fair bit of research on Thomas, but I've put the following together from the ADM 175 records and from a research project of my own.
Thomas entered the CG Service in December 1840 having been nominated from HMS Mutine, a Packet Brig sailing out of Falmouth. His first posting was to Portland, he then made the following moves:
15 May 1843 to Polkerris
5 August 1845 promoted Commissioned Boatman, remaining at the same station.
22 May 1856 promoted to Acting Chief Boatman in Charge, transferred to Newtown.
5 Sept 1856 to Weybourne
11 Sept 1857 to Cromer - Chief Boatman in Charge
24 October 1859 to Weybourne.
It would be possible to continue to trace his career, but unfortunately I don't have these records stored on my computer.
Out of interest during the Crimean War he was one of the 2600 CG's who entered the navy, serving on HMS James Watt, being awarded the Baltic Medal.
On the National Archives catalogue there appear to be two pension applications for him ADM 29/50/396 and ADM 29/60/498.
I hope there is something new in this information for you.

Thank you! I had suspected he might have fought in the Crimea but I am delighted to have the information - he received his medal for the shipwreck in 1856 and I had wondered why he had to wait so long - he was in the Crimea. It's good to have the names of his ships too.
On the 1861 census he was Coast Guard Officer at Weybourne, but by the 1871 census he is a Greenwich Pensioner living in Fakenham, and by 1881 he has moved to Derby, still as a Greenwich Pensioner, dying in 1886 in Derby. Possibly he would have received a second pension for fighting in the Crimea? I'll investigate the pensions with the NA.
Thanks again for the information.

Hi Henwood descendants...
Wondering if your family are attached to mine. You mention locations which have come up for my Henwood family.... St Blazey and Portsea Island... which seem far from each other but I mapped my family.... they moved a lot so I need to dig deeper.
My ancestor is Eliza Henwood (may have been known as Mary), she married Peter Garland (My Garland family have strong ties to St Agnes.... Liskeard
Eliza Henwood is the daughter of
John Henwood (born 1791 in Gwennap and Elizabeth Sleeman born 1785 in South Hill (Callington?)
Eliza was born 1813 in Calstock.
Eliza married Peter Garland in St Blazey but another record (the actual record) says they were married on Portsea Island in 1837.... which is more likely the correct record.
Would love to compare family info... thanks :)

Hi,
My grandmother was a Henwood, and they go back to Cornwall. My 2nd great-grandfather was Thomas, who moved around a lot! He was in St Blazey, Par, Portland, and by 1861 he had been posted to Weybourne in Norfolk. I have no record of Garland though. I'm sending a link to his profile so you can work around to see if there is a link. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Henwood-102
