Title: HARKER, CARDUS (Carrodus, Carradice, etc.)
Post by: baileyjohn on Friday 10 September 04 18:06 BST (UK)
Interested in hearing from anyone researching the above surnames - Anywhere.

My Harkers were from Grassington in Wharfedale but originally (pre-1765) from Swaledale.

Hi Tony

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you made any progress,  or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Hi Ticker

Thanks for your reply - mainly just interested in anyone researching HARKER in Yorkshire - or anywhere else for that matter.

My own tree is fairly settled from 1765 onwards - just occasionally adding an odd twig or fifth cousin twice removed
 ;)

Anything before that date is speculative anyway.

Best Wishes

My ancestor was Ruth Harker, she was born around 1803 at Booze which is a hamlet in Arkengarthdale. Her father was John but I don't know anything else about him or Ruth's mother.  :)

Hi Tony,
My 3rd great grandmother was a Mary Harker born abt 1801 in Manchester although she married 05 Oct 1820 at Helmsley to Thomas Hildrick (Hildrith).  Mary and Thomas lived and brought their family up at Nawton in the Parish of Kirkdale.
I believe that Mary had a brother Ephraim also born Manchester abt 1799.  Ephraim married Ann Peirson 28 Apr 1824 at Rosedale, Yorkshire.    The reason I believe that Mary and Ephraim are sister and brother is that the two youngest children of Mary are visitors in Epharim's household on the 1851 census, although their surname was incorrectly  enumerated as Hildrey.  There is also further visitations between the families on later census.
I have been unable to locate the batisms of either Mary or Epharim(Ephraim) so have not been able to take the family back further.
Although they were both born in Manchester, I believe that the family was originally from Yorkshire.
If you have come across these two, or have any further information on them, I would be very greatful.
Kind Regards
Lainey

Hi Tony,
I have just put 4 posts on the West Yorkshire Site showing a Grassington School Photograph from 1914 with most of the children named.

There are 3 Harkers named but I do not know if they are relations. Also your names Cardus & Carradice are ringing bells but I do not know why. I will look through my stuff & see. Very interested in the Harkers of Grassington so would love to know what you know.

I think Cardus was a name on the back of a dales postcard. Is there a dales connection?

Will get back if I find anything related.

Update: I had provided some photographs for the Save Kettlewell School Campaign & William Carradice was a teacher at the school. In the 1901 census it shows that he was born about 1862 in Hellifield, Yorkshire.

Also I have a trade card for the Temperance Hotel in Appletreewick, Yorkshire which is undated but states that F.H.Cardus is the proprietor.

Regards

Ben

I know you haven't been on here for ages, Lainey Lou but I would like to get in touch as Ephraim Harker is my great-great-great grandad. I am keen to find out more about him before he moved to Rosedale.

Yes. I am Christine Johnson. I will PM you! I would love to know why the Ephraim Harker of 1799 moved from Lancashire to Yorkshire. Also where exactly he was from as my family ended up living in North Manchester.
