Title: Wellshill Cemetery
Post by: trish251 on Thursday 22 December 05 01:12 GMT (UK)
Is there an index anywhere for Wellshill Cemetery, Perth. Would a grave from 1855 still be in existence?

thanks

Trish

Hi Trish
The Wellshill Cemetery index and burial registers are in the record office at the A.K. Bell Library in Perth. The cemetery and all its graves are still in Perth it's quite a big cemetery and is still in use.
Also in the library is a book with all the grave memorial inscriptions compiled I think in 1987. Each Perth Cemetery has its own section and index so it's easy to search.

The library can do a search fro you for a small fee. You need to contact them to find out how much. I think they have a website.

Best of luck

The strangest thing (this family do cause me some grief). I had a very nice reply from an Archivist at the Library - my man isn't listed as being buried at the cemetery - his name is William - but a man called John is listed as being there. My William had (I think) a brother John. There does not appear to be a John that I can find with the correct name/details on SP.  mmmmmmm

Apparently the memorial inscriptions she checked only go to 1854 so he wasn't among them either. Guess I'll have to visit Perth as well as Fife and Renfrew and Dorset and Staffordshire and ......    I do dream alot   :)  :)

Is it possible he was buried in Greyfriars cemetery instead (centre of town)?  AK Bell have memorial inscriptions for that too - they are very nice!!

Hi PP

I should have added a note sooner. I had a few more discussions with the archivist at the library. The son who arranged the burial was called John. It seems the records had him recorded as being buried there - rather than his father William; but it is definitely the right place & person.  many thanks for your interest.

Do you have a picture of the grave?  It's virtually my back garden so if you give me a reference then I'm happy to get you a piccie - may be just an unmarked grave though, as there was mass vandalism there a few years ago - still, that tended to be of the newer ones so you may be lucky.

Thank you so much for such a lovely offer - I'll just check my emails. This was the final note I received, which contains the lair number

Yes, it seems that the recorder got things rather mixed up!. There is a subsidiary burial register/notebook that was used ‘on site’, as it were. We suspect that this notebook was used to help complete the main burial register for it also notes ‘John Popel, Kings Place’.

the notebook also contains the lair number, which you’ll need to locate the grave at Wellshill. It’s Compartment B. section 2, no.43, lair no 645

The man who died was William Pople - the records indicate John Popel. The date of burial was 26 Dec 1855.

many thanks

Trish

I will pop over tomorrow and see what there is to see - will take you a picture of the blank space, if nothing else!
