Title: Rachel Baldam
Post by: carolwalden on Tuesday 20 December 05 17:32 GMT (UK)
Desperately seeking any information to further my research on Rachel Baldam.
She was born 1848 Sculcoates, married Charles Poskitt 1865 and died 1922 Middlesbrough.
They had 9 children that i know of, one of which is my great grandmother Violet Poskitt.
I found her birth by accident but to obtain her parents names i need to order her birth or marriage certificate and i am way over budget on my research at the mo  :-[

Anyone related or can help?
Have tried numerous online census and search sites to no avail.

Hi Carol,

Could this be your Rachel?
The 1851 census for Sculcoates has an entry for
RACHEL BALDON  aged 2 born Hull

Other Baldons on the same page are
John aged 30 born Lincs
Maria aged 31 born East Rd Lincs
John aged 11 born East Rd Lincs
George aged 4 born Hull

Census  HO 107/2361 folio 421

happy hunting

Hello again,

If the family above is the correct one then Freebmd has a marriage for a John Baldam December 1/4 1838 reference Spilsby 14  923, the female on the page is called Maria Conyears.

Thanks Bee, will look into that.
My biggest problem is knowing which name variation to go with lol

I tried a search on the LDS site using numerous first names and the majority of Baldam`s did indeed come from Lincoln, which was my next line of inquiry.
Will see what i come up with from your information and if we get a match will let you know.

Thanks again.

Thought an update was in order.

Bee, John and Maria were my gt gt gt grandparents, once i had that info i was able to find out that Rachel was connected to George Baldam, who was being researched by another member of this site.

Managed to get in touch with a couple of family members and have now gotten the Baldam family back to Anthony b.abt 1727 Lincolnshire( Needs verifying got my info from the IGI)he married  Ann Cooke 1752.

And i think i have gone as far as i can using online sources, so i suppose we can close this one for now.

Thanks.

Thanks for the update, Carole, nice to know that you have made some headway.

Do you know that http://freereg.rootsweb.com is finally searchable, it's still in it's infancy but it might be worth keeping an eye on it now and again.

happy hunting
Bee :)

Hello Carol,  just started my search.  If I am correct on my father's side, I have traced back to Rachel Baldam and Charles Poskitt both born abt 1849.  Rachel and Charles had a son named Charles, born in 1868.  Charles lived in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough, married Fannie Lench and had five children, Florence, Rachel Ann, William H, Eva and Hilda.  Rachel Ann Poskitt was my father's mother and she lived and died in Middlesbrough.

Thanks for the replys everyone.

Due to computer problems i have been unable to post updates.

I have managed to trace Rachel and her family back quite a way. Once i get my family tree program up and running again i will let you know how far back.

Jean, thank you for the update, i had not managed to find a definate marriage for Charles. I will add this to my tree.
My Poskitt side seem to have made Middlesbrough its home for a number of years. I dont remember meeting any of the extended family though, so am not sure if there was a falling out at some point.
