In the 1851 census of Deskford, Banff, my Barbara ANDERSON (m.s. RUSSELL) was listed as:
Barbara; Age: 26; Farmer's Wife; Born: Fochabers, Moray.
However, I cannot find any record of a Barbara RUSSELL being born abt. 1825 in Fochabers or anywhere in Moray! (I have checked Scotland's People...)
Barbara married James ANDERSON on 29 June 1844 in Deskford, Banff.
If anyone can help, I would be very grateful. Without this information I cannot continue to research my husband's great great great grandmother.
Best Wishes,

You will have to search the Old Parish Records for Barbara's birth or christening - Scotland's People includes 1855 and later events only.
Also try the IGI - one possible (though 25 years out!) would be:
BARBARA RUSSELL
Birth: 02 MAY 1850
Christening: 18 MAY 1850 Elgin, Moray, Scotland
Parents:
Father: ALEXANDER RUSSELL Family
Mother: MARGARET CLARK
Hope this of some help

Hi Sarah,
You can search the earlier records at Scotland's People, they just have a separate index. Look under "Old Parish Registers" on the home page. :)
I've got family from Fochabers too - the McKays, but they did move around a bit and were not there for more than a generation or two.

Oops - yes you can look up the OPR's on Scotland's People, but there are no images available - only the index. I had a quick scan, but no sign of your Barbera in Parish of Bellie, to which Fochabers belongs. Try various spellings of Russell !
Fochabers, a small county town, lies some 13 km south east of Elgin, close to the river Spey.
You'll find a location map at www.mbgrg.org, and might find the rest of the site interesting too.
Cheers

Hi Sarah
I cannot find a Barbara Russell but I found a Jane Russell there were a couple of other children born to this family the parents beingAlexander Russell and Barbara Innes. They were the only Russells for that area from 1820-1854. Do these names help you at all?

Thank you Heather,
These names may make some more sense to me in the future.
I will look into it further in the New Year.
Merry Christmas!

Hi Sarah
My wife is also a Great Great Great Grandchild of Barbara Russel.
Barbara's parents were James Russel and Margaret Anderson. (Shown on Barbara Russel's Death Certificate) I can not find a marriage for this pair. The 1841 Census for Deskford shows a Barbara Russel (Unmarried) at the same location, Ardrow, as Margaret Anderson.
The two Murray children shown on the same entry are Margaret Andersons whom I believe was the widow of William Murray.
Margaret's parents, John Anderson and Ann Wilson, are shown in the census in the next door property - Leatchistown.
