I'm looking for a Robert Sturgeon born 1826 Thaxted. Am hoping he's still in his home village with some family. His father was Joseph Sturgeon no birth year for him I'm afraid
By 1847 Robert is with his wife Maria Claxton in Bengeo, over the border in Herts they were married in Cheshunt in 1847.
Any help with this would be great.

;D Hi cep, many thanks for the look up, certainly looks like my Robert.
I wonder if Lucretia is their widowed mother ? I have one or two widowed ladies who seem to have kept their husbands occupations. Robert and his future sons were mostly Blacksmiths.
One question though, were they enumerated as one complete family? I see the address is the same for both.

Mill End or Ends seems to be a part of the Village, rather than a specific address.
Several pages have Mill End at the top, under Place.
Description of Enumeration District 2:
"All that part of the Parish of Thaxted lying south west, beginning at the Great Malting, both sides of Mill End, Tarrants Corner, Bridge Foot Cottages, Grange Street, both sides of Park Street, Stanbrook Folly Mill to Thaxted Forum"
Closer look shows
Lucretia Sturgeon, 42, Blacksmith, Wid and MAY not be born Essex - not clear.
Samuel and Joseph are together, no others, about 8 houses from Lucretia.
Possible they have left home, but are doing the actual smithing?

Hi cep, thank you, that makes things much clearer, I tried to find Thaxted in the 1851 and keep coming up blank at least now I know roughly where Mill End is.
You would not beleive the mistranscriptions of the surname Sturgeon so looking for them is a nightmare, looks like I have some work to do.
Thanks again

Thaxted is Dunmow district. All is lost for 1851.

Hi,
Looking at the parish records for Thaxted. This would seem to be your family
Baptisms
22 Oct 1825, Robert son of Joseph and Luc Sturgson of Thaxted, Blacksmith
previous entry is for William with same date and same parents.
2 Nov 1823, Matilda daughter of Joseph and Louisa Sturgson of Thaxted, Smith
7 Oct 1827, James son of Joseph and Louisa Sturgeon of Thaxted, Blacksmith
Marriage
Joseph Sturgeon, Batchelor
Louisa Chart (or Choat), Spinster (this surname was hard to read)
6 April 1821
Hope this helps

I rechecked the image and the entry as I thought it was worth checking if the name was a badly written Lousia. However it has been correctly transcribed as Lucretia.
The occupation however is given as Blacksmith wid.

Hi Sue, many thanks for that information, I take it that Louisa Chart or Choat is Lucretia? I'm not looking for two wives am I?

Hi,
I think they are one and the same.
I looked at the Parish records and didn't see any Lucretia Hunt in the time period I was looking at.
I don't recall seeing any Lucretia with a diferent surname either although I wasn't really looking for one.
