I have been researching my family tree on behalf of my father, who's not computer literate.
I can get back as far as 1844 for most generations, yet am having some difficulty going back further.
The names I am researching are:
Roscrow (Devon & Cornwall origins)
Hawking (Devon & Cornwall origins)
Henry Edgecombe (Devon & Cornwall origins?)
Alice Mary Wilson (Devon & Cornwall origins??)
I've been using www.onegreatfamily.com to help me, yet seem to be very stuck.
From the 1881 and 1901 census I have the following:
ROSCROW
Parents:
Thirza (ALLEN?) b1843 Hayle Cornwall
David Roscrow b1843 Hayle Cornwall
Children (varified from parish records and family bible):
*David Roscrow b1872 Hayle, Cornwall
Edgar J Roscrow b1875 Devonport
Joseph Badge Roscrow b1888 Devonport
Joseph Garfield Roscrow b1884 devonport
Eldred Roscrow b1881 devonport
From the 1881 census I can locate David (snr), Thirza, David (jnr) and Edgar as being in Stoke Damerel (later known as Devonport). I have an address for the census. By 1901 I can only locate Thirza, David (snr), Eldred and Joseph Garfield as still being in the Devonport Area.
*David Married a woman called Clara b1872 - surname unclear.
They had a Daughter called Lillian Clara b1908 (other children?), St Erth . I have data after this to present.
Hawking
Herbert Hawking b1877 Married Alice Mary Wilson b1889. Herbert appears to have been born in Callington(Sp?). After this the Hawking roots move to Devonport (Stoke Dameral) where they had my Grandfather Albert Edward and his Brother Alfred John.
Herbert had a sister called Mary. She married Henry Edgcombe. Dates are unknown for these, yet it is believed that there may be a connection to either Canada and/or Austrailia from this line of the Family.
I can't seem to trace earlier than this for any of these families.
Help appreciated.

Hi Simon,
just a general thought here, nothing specific:
have you tried the Online Parish Clerk (OPC) Sites for
Cornwall: 1) http://west-penwith.org.uk/opc.htm and 2) http://www.cornish-ancestors.co.uk/
and Devon: http://www.cs.ncl.ac.uk/genuki/DEV/OPCproject.html
I haven't been researching in Cornwall, but I have been using the Dorset site a lot, and that one is fantastic.
Cornwall 1) says that parish records for Hayle are "coming soon" and most OPCs do look-up services aswell.
Hope this helps,
Good Luck

Thanks for the links.
I now believe that Thirza was Thirza Badge.
Research on the 1891 census shows Eldred Roscrow being in a houshold in Penzance along with the family's Badge and Nicholas. Whilst nearly all the namesakes were born in Cornwall, One was born in Middlesex.
I am looking for people with links to these names that have links to Cornwall between 1815 and 1891.
In particular the names Margary, Harold & Thirza Badge, and James H (Hodge?), Joseph, Margary & Fred Nicholas. Fred appears to have been born ABT 1883 in Sheppards Bush, Middlesex.
Simon.

Looking at the image, it seems that the enumerator drew his dash for seperating houses one name after he should have ! He corrected it on th image.

The top one seems consistant.
There is a strong link with ROSCROW to St Erth and Hayle - David Roscrow and Thirza (now strongly believe to be thanks to 1891 census) Badge were both from Hayle.
How did the connection between 10 hood st and 33 garden st take place? Sorry, but I'm unable to think properly today *drinks more coffee*
Many Thanks,
Simon.

I did two seperate searches:
1) Thirza Badge, giving us a niece in Hood Street
and
2)
Roscrow, giving us Garden Street.
So enjoy your coffee, and then, for the next question:
If Thirza is a Niece, which of the Morleys was a blood relative ?
Catherine, who became a Morley, or Charles himself, who was born in St. Earth, same as Thirza ?
-
Which could mean Margary Badge being born Margary Morley.

Can anyone help with the Hawking name?
Census data hasn't proven much help for tracing Herbert Hawking backwards. >:(
Herbert was born in 1877, and later went onto marry Alice Mary (wilson?). They had 2 sons, one of whom was my Grandfather Albert Edward b1909. There is some connection to Stoke Climsland, but we think this is from Herberts Father.
Thanks,
Simon.
-
Hi Simon,
Could this be Herbert in 1901
Name Age in 1901 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island .
Herbert W Hawking 30 Stoke Climsland, Cornwall, England Head Gillingham Kent
Mary B Hawking 27 Kingsand, Cornwall, England Wife Gillingham Kent
"Herbert" is a match, "Stoke Climsland" sounds good, but Mary B. instead of Alice Mary ???
-
And they are in Kent. Herberts 2 sons were born in Devon port, and it's believed he always remained local (he had connections to the docks at Devonport - service of work?).
Sorry to ask, but are there any hits for HAWKING in Gunislake, Callington, Linkinhorne or Pillaton that would fit the 1877 birth date we have?
Simon.

Found these from Stoke Dameral, do they fit in anywhere ???

My computer is dead slow today, maybe it'll speed up after a weekend rest !
Let me know if you wnat any household lookups (probably on Monday)
-
Mary W is a possibility.
Could i ask a favour for a look up on the other area's I mentioned for the same period?
I know the Hawking's were in Devonport by 1901 census.
Many thanks,
Simon.

Hi Simon,
This is Mary W on the 1891 census
Hawking, Mary W 25 Devonport, Devon Head Stoke Damerel Devon
Hawking, Mabel W 5 Devonport, Devon Daur Stoke Damerel Devon
Hawking, George J 2 Devonport, Devon Son Stoke Damerel Devon
The family is living at 20 Gloucester Street and Mary is a dressmaker
I had a quick look at the other places but didn't find anything. Haven't got a lot of time now, so maybe someone else can find something.
Your best bet now is probably to sort out your tree and then make new requests about specific people and places.
Good Luck.
p.s. I have entered two new sites Cornwall census sites in "Sharing Useful Links: CORNWALL", on the Cornwall board, which may help . ie. St. Erth !!

Thanks again for all your help.

Hello Simon,
Did you know that there is an Edgecombe one-name study by an Alan Taylor? He has done a great deal of Edgecombe research into probably all branches of the family - from Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire and elsewhere. An Edgecombe magazine is published and distributed to 'members' each Quarter and the various branches of the family are kept up to date with new findings. I can give details if you are interested.
