Title: DUFFIELD family in 1841 Census in Taverham
Post by: Keith Sherwood on Tuesday 13 December 05 11:25 GMT (UK)
Hi, Everyone,
Could somebody tell me whether the DUFFIELD family had any of its members still living in Taverham in the 1841 Census.  I have discovered burials there up to 1836 when looking through the Parish records yesterday, but I'm not sure whether Susannah DUFFIELD, my 3-times-gt-grandmother might have still been alive then.  She would have been in her eighties, if she'd survived that long...
Very best wishes,
keith

There doesn't seem to be any Duffields listed as being in Taverham in 1841.

Sue,
Thanks very much for looking for me!  Never mind, they must have moved away to pastures green...

Hi  I just joined up and I read an inquiry about the Duffields in Taverham.  My great great grandmother was a Duffield from there.  In the 1841 census she shows up as a Susanna Miles shopkeeper in Norwich but born in Taverham.  She was born Susanna Duffield and in the 1841 census would have been about 41 or so.  According to her death certificate she was 80 years old when she died in 1878.  She couldnt write so you have to take that with a grain of salt.  Susanna Duffield married Samuel Miles a cordwainer or shoemaker on Nov 18th 1819 in Norwich at St. Saviours church.  I hope this is helpful and I would be very interested in knowing anything about the Duffields of Taverham.

Gchapple,
Welcome to Rootschat!  I always love it when a thread bursts back into life after a long period of dormancy - in this case nearly two and a half years...
Back in December 2005 I knew very little abut my DUFFIELD family from Taverham, but some time afterwards I went to the Norfolk Record Office and copied down details about them, so I'll go and hunt them out now.  My gt-gt-gt-grandmother's name was actually Mary Ann DUFFIELD, b.1796 in Taverham, but if you're descended from a Susanna DUFFIELD from that village, we must be related!
The place has grown enormously from when I did my first teaching practice there in the summer of 1970, and is now almost a dormitory town of Norwich.
Will post again here very shortly with all details I discovered on the DUFFIELD family of Taverham...
Very best wishes,
keith

Hi again Gchapple,
Have now got the details from the Taverham PR'sin front of me.
A Francis DUFFIELD married a Susanna BALES 02-05-1778 at Great Melton, Norfolk.
They then must have settled in Taverham where the following children were baptised:
Amy bapt: 20-08-1780 died 20-04-1783
James bapt: 12-03-1782 died 10-04-1783
James bapt: 01-02-1784
William bapt: 13-08-1786
Robert bapt: 01-10-1788
Mary bapt: 30-10-1796, but born c. 1794
Emma bapt: 11-05-1800

There doesn't seem to be a Susanna DUFFIELD in this generation, though of course this was their mother's name after marriage...
Regards,
keith
N.B. I wonder whether I could possibly have mistranscribed Susanna as Emma, as that baptismal date would nicely fit your ancestor...

Hi Keith thanks for the quick reply.  These names are very interesting that you sent me.  Susanna in the 1841 census have a couple of children.  Susan 14, Samuel12 which would be named after his father, William 10 which would be my great grandfather and Emma 8 years.  You can see the similarity of  the names.  In the 1851 census it shows samuel 22, william 21 and emma 18 years.  Now in the 1861 census it shows a daughter written down as Mary ann either 28 or 38.  A lot of familiar names.  But something I just noticed when I looked up the 1841 census is that a William Duffield was a millwright 31 years old married to an Elizabeth  with children william 10, Maria 4 and John 4 living just a couple places down and on the same census page!  This William Duffield would not be the right age but seems to be quite concidental.  Do you think that this Susanna belongs to Francis and Susannas family?
sincerely Geo

Geo,
What I really wanted to find yesterday when I searched through my (disorganised) files was the notebook I where wrote all the DUFFIELD entries down that I found when I visited the NRO.  I think there were one or two other details apart from the family I realised were my own, so perhaps your Susanna was mentioned there.
The search for that green hardback notebook goes on...

Do you really mean that a William DUFFIELD, 10 years old in 1841, was your great-grandfather?  I'm in my sixties now, and just about all my gt-grandparents were born in the 1860's...

Hi Keith my g g grandmother was susanna duffield miles born around 1798 or whatever.  My g grandfather william Jacob Miles was born in 1830 and my grandmother was emma miles born in 1881.  My father was born in 1910 and I am in my early 40s so it shows how old my father was when I was born.  I my self am a lot older than my wife and we have 4 children 6 years and younger.  Pretty crazy huh?  Everybody thinks I am younger but its not due to my hairline. Ha ha!  Are you on GenesReunited?  I am .   Great site and cheap only about 19 canadian dollars a year and I have found a phenomenal number of relatives and have broken down some pretty major walls that otherwise I would not have found no matter how many bmds I had went through.  Hope to hear from you soon.  P.s do you know the history of the Duffield name or any interesting stuff like that?
sincerely Geo

Geo,
Thanks for explaining all that for me!  It's strange how there sometimes is a long gap between generations, for whatever reason.  One of my ancestors in the 18thC didn't marry until he was fifty years old, and this created a similar effect.
Have not been able to get further back than 4-times gt-grandfather Francis DUFFIELD, and know nothing of the name's origin as yet.
Will continue to look for my vital green notebook to see whether I might have jotted down details about your Susanna...

N.B. Yes, I sometimes get family links on GenesReunited, but Rootschat has been in a different league!

Geo,
The MILES family that married into my SHERWOOD family were from the Bath area, though I've never got any further than about the 1830's with them...
