Title: John Bell Dawdon Inn Keeper

I am looking for any information please on John and Mary Bell who where both on the 1861 gateshead census and had a inn or pub in Dawdon Co Durham   ::)

I have lived in Seaham for years and the only pubs or clubs were Dawdon Club and Dawdon Hotel which was demolished about ten years ago. There are several Bell families still in Seaham

Hi Gums,

Have you tried the website www.historicaldirectories.org they have many searchable directories on line including the Post Office Directory of Northumberland & Durham 1858. If you do go onto the site I would suggest that you spend a few minutes exploring how to get the best out of the site first.

There are several Bell families who ran pubs in County Durham and the Durham Publicans start on page 652 of the directory mentioned above. Not sure that the images and pages have the same numbers - you would need to check. In the directory the list is alphabetical by pubs but these are a few of those I noticed ran by people called Bell. There could be others!

At the time of the 1861 census all Seaham Harbour addresses were listed as Dawdon.
From sometime before 1861 until after 1879 a John Bell was trading as a beer retailer at 23 North John St, Seaham Harbour, probably a beerhouse. By 1889 a John Bell was trading from the Canterbury Arms, North Railway St SH.
