I am looking for Joseph Tucker Carpenter/Builder aged 50 in 1841 census. His son Benjamin was born St Luke according to later census in 1840 living with him could be wife Elizabeth, daughter Elizabeth 15, son Joseph 11, son John 10, son Richard 9. Joseph 50, Elizabeth (wife), Elizabeth 15, Joseph 11 all born out of County. Benjamin, John and Richard in County. I have them on 1851 census living in Newington Surrey minus both Elizabeth's

Hello Tony
Elizabeth must be a new addition for the 1861...........here is his original wife!........although it doesn't say that but you imagine it to be.
It therefore appears that whoever Elizabeth is? .......... the children that should be here and aren't....are hers and took his name for the 1861 census.
Look for the marriage of Joseph Tucker to an Elizabeth? between 1841 and 1861 and from the info in your post they probably married somewhere in Lambeth, Surrey?
Or
Look for the demise of Mary Ann in Camberwell within the same period and after just looking he may not have remarried at all 8)
MARY ANN ELIZABETH TUCKER died Lambeth 1847...........is this her? or do you have her in 1861?
1841
SURREY PLACE, ST GILES CAMBERWELL, LAMBETH, SURREY
JOSEPH TUCKER 50 CARPENTER NO (NOT BORN IN SURREY)
MARY ANN " 41 NO
JOSEPH " 13 NO
BENJAMIN " 1 NO

Hi Bryant
Sorry for delay in replying but have only just returned from holiday.
Joseph Tucker married Elizabeth Birt in Bristol in 1823. I do not have a death for her but in 1841 Joseph's wife is shown as Mary Ann. I have searched and found a marriage of Joseph Tucker to Mary Ann Cummons in 1838 at St Peter Walworth but it looks as though as you say she died in 1847 I have found a child born 1847 Mar (Jane) quarter which corresponds with Jane shown with Joseph in 1851, so perhaps Mary Ann died in Childbirth I shall have to check death index for quarter
Anyway thanks a lot for your help another bit of the jigsaw,
Regards
Tony

Hallo Tony,
I have come to this rather late. Joseph Tucker is my direct ancestor. His second wife was Mrs Mary Ann Cummons (nee Wright) who had 3 sons (and a daughter, Mary Ann?) by her first husband, John, who were called William, John and Richard. In one census, the 3 boys call themselves Tucker, but in fact they were Cummons, or Cummins.
Joseph had a son from his first marriage, also Joseph, born 1828 in Bristol, but I don't know what his first wife was called.
By his second wife Mary Ann Cummons, Joseph had Benjamin, born 1840 (my ancestor) and Jane Elizabeth born 1846, who was living with her half brother John Cummins in 1861.
Mary Ann died on 22 January 1857, aged 56, at 13 Thornton Street, Walworth
I have Joseph Tucker as born in 1789 in St Stephen-in-Brannel, Cornwall, and dying in St Saviour's Union Workhouse in Southwark in 1871, but I would dearly love to have some corroboration of this.
Joseph was a carpenter journeyman, like his son Benjamin, who died on 29 November 1925, at 46 Ouseley Road, Balham

Hi Tony,
I have followed up Joseph Tucker's daughter Elizabeth by his first wife, and find her full name was Elizabeth Mary French Tucker. This has been very helpful since it indicates that in fact Joseph came from St Mabyn in Cornwall (not St Stephen in Brannel) and is the Joseph whose parents were John Tucker and Mary French.
I would be really grateful for all the info you have on Joseph Tucker's pre-census years
