Title: Looking for a SEWEL(L)
Post by: Clincher on Monday 05 December 05 14:56 GMT (UK)
In 2004 I contributed to a thread which discussed some different ways of spelling or transcribing the above name (and others),
I came across this baptism from Great Dunmow
Essex RO ref: D/P 11/1/3 fiche 1 of 2
12 Feb 1716 SAYWELL (or SEWEL) Abraham s of Abraham and Elizabeth his wife of Chelmsford parish born 30th Jan

I have transcribed the entry exactly as it reads. I haven't seen that version before

Hi Clincher,
Glad you mentioned that variant, Sewell is one of my family names and had I come across the Saywell version I might well have ignored it.

Regards

Hi Louisa Maud,

I've got back to Edward Sewell who married Mary Pudney 1690 at Little Leighs.

They raised a family at Gt Leighs and my Sewells appear to have stayed there until around 1777.

In 1777 Joseph Sewell married Mary Stowell at Sandon, one of their daughters, Elizabeth married John Warner at Sandon in 1803.  The Warners eventually married into my Card line at Sandon, the Card line is my mother's side.

I take it that you have Sewells, where were your Sewells from?

Regards

Sorry I haven't replied earlier, something  that annoys me I must admit when I see no replies and here I am not replying myself, HUGE apologies,
anyhow I can't connect up with your Sewells I am afraid, thank you for taking the time to reply.

regards

No worries Louisa - I have no SEWELLs (as far as I know) but I know of some who do and if I see something about the name which seems as if it might be useful I post hereabouts

While looking in Coggeshall marriages for someone (D/P 36/1/8 fiche 2 of 3) I came across this SEWELL marriage which seemed worth making a note of:
James SEWELL of Yeovil in Somerset bachelor married Sophia TAYLOR of Coggeshall spinster by licence 4 Sep 1807
Both signed register
Witnesses were Charles NEWMAN and Frances EAGLE who both signed

The Sewells in the tree I am searching are from
Baddow circa 1837
Ramsden Bellhouse
West Hanningfield

I have a problem with one James born either 1835 or 1837 who I can't quite match up yet, I suspect he didn't know his correct D of B on the census

That is a shame.  Keep on looking though and don't give up.  My mum has been looking for a family member in Canada for 5 years now and all of a sudden she found her and now they are in constant contact.  So perserverance does pay off.  Wendy

Hi Kath,
Well since you ask  ;D

There might just be a clue in there to help me find the Edward Sewell who married Mary Pudney in 1690, Gt Waltham is close enough to Little Leighs to be of interest.

Make your mind up Kath it's either Clincher or me, I refuse to share stalkers  >:(
