I've found an entry on the IGI (an individual submission, so suspect) that has as the birth and marriage place "St Mary's Wiltshire". Any ideas as to what that might mean, please?
-
Hmm .... there are:
Cricklade St Mary
Chitterne St Mary
Devizes, St Mary the Virgin
Donhead St Mary
Marlborough, St Mary the Virgin
Orcheston St Mary
Westport St Mary
All are parishes, but only Devizes and Marlborough are part of a town - the others are all villages with St Mary in the name.
Do you know where they were post marriage?

I thought there'd be plenty of St Marys! Trouble is, all I know for certain is that Ann Godden, widow of Joseph, a mariner, died in Hastings in 1841 at the age of 80. Looking for the marriage on the IGI, the best bet was this Wiltshire one, since my Goddens (I am trying to connect Ann with them) came from Wiltshire. Not sure where, probably the Little Cheverill or Market Lavington area. Bit of a lost cause, I reckon, but thanks for trying.

Maybe Devizes then. But Market Lavington's church is dedicated to St. Mary.

Just putting my two-pennorth in here for what it's worth -
The last time I chased up a reference to St Mary's, Wiltshire from the IGI , it turned out to be Devizes. May or may not mean anything. Have you checked BVRI to see if the marriage is there as well? I can do that for you if you don't have access.

I don't have access to the BVRI. I'd be very grateful if you could check it for me. The IGI entry says 22/10/1786 - Ann Rodd to Joseph Godden.

Had a look at BVRI but no luck, sorry :(
How frustrating! I suppose it might be possible to get hold of the film referred to in the IGI using a local LDS Family History Centre? I've never tried that route myself so don't know how useful the films are for individually submitted records.
Good luck!

Thanks for trying. I don't think I'll pursue her any further, but it would have been nice to prove a connection.

My family the Hobbs, go back until the late 1500's in Easterton tithe of Market Lavington. And of course have lived in Market Lavington also. A branch of the Godden family have married in to the Hobbs. And I have been in the church of St Mary in Market Lavington so this is probably the right direction for you.

A Charles Hobbs and Jane Godden married in1844.
St Mary's Parish papers are kept at Trowbridge.
