Title: Odell-Bedfordshire
Post by: Trisha on Thursday 01 December 05 11:38 GMT (UK)
Hi,
does anyone have any information about the ODELL family of Bedfordshire, particularly the Odells of the Marston Moretaine area?
I'm looking for a particular line and the P.R is very confusing. ??? ???
In particular I'm looking for an Ann ODELL,born circa 1747.She married a John THOMPSON .1 of their children was called Elizabeth and she married a Samuel VIRGIN of Marston Moretaine.
However I can't get straight Ann Odell's parentage.There's a lot of Odell's about. ;)
Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?
Best wishes,
Trisha :) :) :)

Hi:
I found some O'Dell's that turned up in my Champkin Family Tree, in and around the 1900 or later, don't seem to have dates, they are from the Luton & Dunstable area.
Do you think they are of interest.
Gail

Hi Gail,
thanks for the email.
Does your Odell line go back to the 18th century? If not I might have trouble connecting our 2 lines. One thing I've discovered is that in Bedfordshire ODELL is nearly as commonplace as the name SMITH.There seems to be loads of them.I might therefore need to keep in mind your kind offer for later. At the moment I'm really, really stuck at 1747.
Best wishes,
Trisha :)

Thanks for reply, no, I don't have anything other than these ones, as they are only a side line group.
But keep in mind and maybe down the road you will need them.  Happy Hunting.
Cheers,
Gail

Hello Trisha

How is the Marston Moretaine PR confusing - do you have the transcript?

The IGI has extracted baptism from ther PR of Anne Odell on 21 Apr 1747, daughter of Thomas & Mary. Is this who you think is your Ann ? If so - then I assume you may know that they also baptised an Anne later on 7 Nov 1752. Did you check the PR for a burial of the first Anne? Unless there were two Thomas & Marys.

But there is also a baptism of Anne Odell on 1 Feb 1751 daughter of John & Sarah.

So which is your Anne ? There is a MM marriage of Anne Odell to William Grey on 15 June 1777 which could be either of them. The marriage of Ann to John Thompson is not until 4 Sept 1798 when your Anne would be aged 51 - does the marriage entry on the PR transcript giive any more details, could she be a widow ? & would she want another child at that age ?

Regards John

Is your confusion based on the numerous member submitted entries of baptisms of children to John Thompson & Anne Odell that are appear on the IGI, which may be pure guesswork unless you confirm it with the actual parish register. Have you done that ? The MM baptisms are extracted to the IGI & there is an entry for Betty Thompson on 5 Feb 1808. However the member submitted Elizabeth Thomson baptised on 5 Feb 1808 at MM apparently married Thomas James Barker in 1825. So when did your Elizabeth marry Samuel Virgin ?

I do have a Daniel Odell b 1833, son of Joseph Odell and Jemima Sims in Bedfordshire. Does that ring any bells for anyone? Joseph and Jemima had at least 1 more child - Mary Ann Odell b 1827 in Maulden. Daniel Odell was a sweep and married Mary Holes in 1855. Mary already had 1 child out of wedlock and had another, probably with Daniel Odell before they were married.
Is there a link for anyone? Sorry if I reactivated this but there did seem the possibility of a link somewhere.

:)I am looking for a Sophia Odell who had a son born 4/12/1833 and baptised at St. Leonard's Shoreditch
on 7/1/1834.  His name was John Sharp Odell, at the time of his birth Sophia was a single woman.  Thanks

Is there any evidence that Sophia was from Beds? If not you'd have done better starting a new thread on the Middlesex board.

Have you found them in any census, or do you have a marriage/burial for either of them? Trying to pin her down from the information you have provided is an impossibility. She could have come from anywhere. She might even have been a widow. She could have been between the ages of 16 and 45. Presumably you must have more information on John Sharp Odell, whose baptism is the only time I can find him described thus.
