Information wanted on the case of William Graham, poacher, Cumberland, who killed a keeper in November 1857.

Hi
I know it might sound daft but have you put this on the Cumbria Family History Society website at cumbriafhs.com
Someone on there might know where to look or even know of the case.
I hope this helps in some small way.
Good Luck

He appears to have a sausage named after him

It looks a bit rich with being made of both venison and port
-
Thank you, Lil and Geoff.
Will try the Cumbria FHS.
No opportunity to try the sausage yet - I live in France - but had already contacted the makers just in case they knew something about WG. Unfortunately not...
Whatever, still hoping that someone can help.

There is a project to transcribe Cumberland newspapers

Perhaps if you can convince them that it may be a very interesting story, someone might be persuaded to look it up.

had an hour to spare yesterday so went to the library and tried to find this story. Unfortunately they didn't use headlines in 1857 and I checked November and December at the 2 main papers kept. Plenty on the Indian Mutiny but nothing on our poacher.

If you Google "William Graham,Poacher,Cumberland" there are a few articles about him

Thanks to Bob Graham and Briant.
Have tried all remedies suggested re. William Graham. As it happens, Briant, the article you refer to is by me: the result of enquiries and help... The Veteran reference I knew and it adds nothing.
Ultimately, I think that we've secured a longer life for WG's reputation.
Thanks again to everyone who helped.

I have 2 documents on William Graham which might be of interest. If I have your conventional email I could send them to you
I am meant to be related to him as a ancestor of the Hogarths of Longdales. My uncle knew of all the details by word of mouth through the family. He says that my g grandfather who was otherwise a godly man had seen nothing wrong with this. He commented that poaching was a way of life and an economic necessity.
What is your interest
