Can anyone find Moses Shepherd and wife Sarah in Brighton in 1851?
They would possibly be in their 50's, born Earles Colne/Colchester area.
Thanks, Elaine

Hi Elaine,
This is the only Moses Shepherd born in Essex I could find...as you can see, he's not with a wife called Sarah, nor is he in Brighton!
Eld Lane, Colchester St Botolph, Essex
Moses Shepherd, Head, 56, Journeyman Bricklayer, Essex Earles Colne
Rebecca Shepherd, Wife, 49, Essex Colchester
HO107/1781 Pg 22
Regards, Emma ;)

Thanks Emma,
Yes, it is the only Moses that I could find. It just mystified me that he seems to be with a different woman. He was married to Sarah and they apparently had 8 children born between 1817 - 1833 all in Colchester. I wonder if second marriages or divorces were common in those days? Maybe Sarah died. I'll have to find out.
I was trying Brighton Lookups because there may possibly be some family links there.
Regards, Elaine.

Hi Elaine,
I had a similar thing happen in my tree - the youngest of my 2xGt Grandfather's siblings was 10 years younger than the rest, so I had doubts as to whether his known wife was the Mother to all children. As it happens, she was, but upon receiving their marriage certificate I discovered my 3xGt Grandfather had been a widow when he married her. Still have no idea who his first wife was!

I have the index for Brighton 1851 on fiche and there is no Moses Shepard, Shephard. Shepherd, Sheppard, Shepperd, Sheppherd on it. Does give you an idea of the variants to search though. I would never have thought of some of them!
