Can someone please do a lookup for Charlotte Wilce b. somewhere between 1832 and 1840. Apologies that the birth year is a bit vague but I have two Charlotte Wilce's on the 1861 census that could both fit the bill so I am hoping that finding her on the 1871 will solve that problem and help to decide which one is the right one!

On the 1851 cencus there is 2 Charlotte Wilce.
Thomas Wilce. head .born about1814.
Charlotte Wilce wife born about 1828
Fanny Wilce dau born about 1840
John wilce son born about 1842
Charlotte Wilce dau born about 1844
Thomas Wilce son born about 1844
Elizabeth Wilce born about 1850 .

Thankyou for all your reply's guys! Well, this is the story here. On the 1881 census I have my Charles Smith with his wife Charlotte, their daughters Ellen Jane Smith, Alice Smith and Stepsons James Wilce and Lewis Wilce. Now I assumed therefore that they were Charlotte's Sons and that her maiden name must have been Wilce or she had been married before. Subsequently I found a marriage for Charles Smith to Charlotte Wilce so it turned out to be the latter of those two options. From this I set about finding Charlotte Wilce on the 1861 census and came up with the two Charlotte's that I mentioned in my first post. All my indications point towards Jabez Wilce being the correct husband for her plus the second Charlotte I found on the 1861 was a widow and didn't have any children called James or Lewis. Does this all make sense?
Any more help you can give will be appreciated.

P.S Alli - Could George Wilce aged 3 on the 1871 census you gave me and Lewis Wilce aged 12 on the 1881 census be the same person or was Lewis somewhere else?

it is possible it is the same person sometimes people have been put down using middle names?

Ok first question - Can I assume that I incorrectly had Jabez Wilce as the first husband of my Charlotte? and that it should infact be James Wilce?

that is correct james is first husband of charlotte.and if my instincts are correct the charlotte down as housekeeper in 1851 may well be your charlotte before she married james

Hi Jabez Wilce is in my family tree his brother Elijah Wilce was my great great grandfather. Jabez and Elijah's father was called William Wilce born 1802. Elijahwas born abt 1830, left Gloucestershire to move up to Northumberland with his wife Caroline Wilce (nee Wilkes). Elijah and Caroline where married on the 4th December 1852 at St. Saints Church, Bishopswood, Glos. Elijah had a son called Charles Henry Wilce who was my great grandfather he was born in Westbury on Severn in 1865. he married in 1889 to Margaret Isabella Wilce(nee Francis). They where mostly coalminer.
William Wilce born abt 1802 occupation Quarryman married Mary?? born abt 1801/02.

Elizabeth Wilce born at 1826
Susannah Wilce born at 1850
Elijah Wilce born abt 1830 married Caroline Wilkes

"Widow" was often crossed through simply because it wasn't an occupation. Most likely the woman was a widow.
