Hello Lincs
I have an oil painting of an ancestor on my maternal side.
On the back is the name John Elsom three times mayor
of Boston Lincolnshire who died age 75 in 1865. The father
of Susan Straw Barwell.
I have found Susan Straw Barwell in 1861 age 31 indexed
Susan Stras Barwell born Baston Lincolnshire. RG9/931 folio 14 page 21
Can anyone help with John Elsom b. 1790

Hello Geoff E
Thankyou, no I had not seen it, a very interesting read.
I always thought the old painting said 1665 so had never
pursued it. I have always had a mind to go to Boston
Archives to start the search but have concentrated on my
paternal ancestors.
A closer look tonight, I decided it was 1865 and then finding
Susan Straw Barwell set me off.
Thank you again the lead looks promising.

I have two distressed books/directories, not sure of the date of the or the title as the first pages are missing >:( but I have found some information on John Elsam
In the one I think is dated about 1840
he was a Councilor till Nov 1843
also listed under
WHITESMITHS [AND NAIL MAKER] High St Boston.
The later book has the Town Council [1855-6] where he is an Alderman and also a Borough Magistrate.
Now Listed under Ironmongers, Bridge foot. High St
Hope this is of some interest to you.

Hello Helen
Your information is very good news, on the back of the painting I
mentioned it does state he was a JP. This is definitely my man
his daughter Susan married William Barwell Iron Foundry Owner
employing 160 men.
I am really pleased that you have answered my query I should be
able to pick him up myself on the 1851 and 61 census. And then
post a request for him on the 1841.
You have put substance to a faint bit of writing, which also says
the artist R. A. was a cousin but of who and her name is faded into
the wooden back of the frame.
Thank you very much for your interest.
Kind Regards Oly

Hello Geoff E
A sure winner, I appreciate that, you are quick off the mark on the Linc's
board, I have them all through now. My next port is the Leicester Uni Trade
Directories site.
I have info about his grandson who trained as an engineer and spent his
early working life in India bridge building, later to bring his family home and
become Engineer to the Rother Valley Coal Company.
Thanks for the cog in the wheel of my Elsom, Barwell line.
The old portrait is coming to life.
Regards Oly
