:)Dear Eleanor thank you for your posting. At first glance here is what I would suggest to help with your research:
Civil Registration began in 1837 in the Uk (later for Ireland) however the first few years can be sketchy for registrations. but going by the 1851 census record I previously included, I would estimate William Phillips and Mary's marriage (if Eleanor was indeed their 1st born) around 1839-1840. Which is indeed within the Civil Registation. If you are indeed searching for Eleanor's marriage to Thomas Francis abt 1859 and not her parents, then
Keep this site handy for churches in the UK I have found it very useful myself http://www.findachurch.co.uk
also If you live overseas, this site may be useful to order Certificates in the UK : http://www.ukcertificates.com/birth_cert.php
Also if you find the microfiche entry (paid searches i am afraid) on this site, then you can order the certificates through this site, It is a very resourceful website even though it is a pay per view site, you will however have to download on your pc, the djuv viewer that is free before you can view any records, use this site if the Free Birth Marriage and Death website
( http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl ) have not transcribed the entries that are needed for you yet (1837 - 1901): http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/
This may be the address needed for the Certificate you wish to purchase, but be aware that I am not 100% here, and you should telephone or write first to check that this is indeed correct:

Dear Welsh Jen,
Diolch yn fawr! I hope I've got that right - my Welsh is almost non-existent, I'm ashamed to say (but I do have great plans to learn), even though I am Welsh born and bred.
Many, many thanks, the info is of great interest.

No Match to Jemima in 1841 (do you have a maiden name for her?)
There is another John Bird besides this one, but living in Swansea S.Wales c.1811 (not born in Glamorgan) no other matches:

I also found a marriage entry for a John Bird a few years after this death entry, could your John have re-married 9 yrs later?

BIRD John Cardiff 11a 371
There are 2 women in the same transcription (it could be the wife of this individual hasn't been transcribed on the Free BMD's as of yet):
Fowler Elizabeth Cardiff 11a 371
Williams Sarah Cardiff 11a 371
If you notice they have a Wesleyan Minister visiting them in 1861 at the time of the census, They were in all probability Wesleyan Methodists.
I hope this helps you

Hi Jen,
Many thanks for all the Census Info.
Very much appreciate your prompt reply and time.
-
Welsh Jen,
Could you please look up the following family on the 1861 Glamorgan census...
John EVANS (b 1822?), wife Hannah (b 1821)
son Allen John (b 1858), dau Margaret Mary (b1860)
I am led to believe they were living in the Llantrisant / Tonyrefail area.
John EVANS originated from Denbighshire, and I am trying to find out where Hannah came from. I think it is Gloucester(shire)
-
:D Hello nearly didnt find this one!, I searched for various ways with the keyword Denbeighshire and Evans in the end as there were no matches. So I searched for a Hannah Evans born in Gloucs and luck was in!, this must be yours as all the names and the dates are same or near to the one you state. However John is down as being from Montgomeryshire not Denbeighshire, the question marks as in the census data and have not been added by myself.

-
Welsh Jen, thanks for your reply with the 1861 census.
That is my family.
Hannah is listed as 'Hannah EDWARDS EVANS' - I don't know if she was previously marriage to a Mr EDWARDS, or if that was her maiden name...
I am also having difficulty finding a St Mary's in Gloucestershire... I'll have to post a query on the Gloucestershire section of this board...
John EVANS birthplace of Llansillin is on the Denbighshire/Montgomeryshire border - hence the confusion.
-
Thank you so much, It's really nice when something is found, I 'm over the moon. No I don't have her maiden name ,
I went to Kew yesterday and found James birth so I will sending for cert.
I wonder if Jen would be able to look them up on 1861,

Many thanks again I 'll go to bed happy.

Hi Thanks SS_Rhondda for helping me with the look up’s, much appreciated! ~ Sorry for my delay in my response, I have been away all weekend and have been inundated by emails upon my return ~ Sorry.
Here is the only 2 matches to Charles Davies. There are of them in the Census however only 2 could be matches. I feel the 2nd entry with Charles being a Boarder is the more likely one, due to the wife’s name in the 1st entry not the same as the details given:

Dear Welsh Jen.
Thank you for that,.
I have to birth of Charles and Sarahs Son James. so am waiting for cert to see maiden name of Sarah.
So he might have been in lodgings before getting married?
It's so difficult when you live so far away.
Is there a records office in Swansea that I could go and look at parish records?
Sorry but is CWMTWRCH a place, as on 1881 he was shown as born Swansea.
I really appreicate all you help.

Get back to me when you have the Cert, you may have more idea of their religious denomination in order to view parish records. A lot of parish records are held in the university (there is a link for the swansea archivist Elisabeth Bennett on this Glamorgan board), but not all.
Cwmtwrch is an area near Swansea, ( There is Upper an Upper and Lower Cwmtwrch) if you search for Cwmtwrch Isaf you will find the map with this link:

Hope this is of help to you. :D

Hello Jen
Could I ask you to do a Jones lookup for me? I realise the Joneses are hard to keep up with so I'll try to be detailed!
My GGG grandfather DAVID JONES was born around 1830 in Swansea St John. His father from his marriage certificate was THOMAS JONES and both were Mason's. David married SARAH CONDON and I have census matches for her ancestors and for the couple in 1851 (I think both of them died in the 1850's)
I'd like to be able to find David's parents and siblings in the 1841 census if possible. I found an IGI match for a DAVID JONES baptised in Swansea St John 14/1/1827 which gives the parents as THOMAS JONES and CATHERINE MARY (presumably Mary is a mddle name). In 1851 he gives his age as 21 so the date seems wrong, but David did name his eldest daughter Catherine so it could be a link!
Anyway if you have the time to help that would be great!
Thanks
Jason

Run out of space, so had to post here too! :)
I did a search for a David Jones c.1827 (as per your IGI details given) and there was only one match all others were born in Bridgend or Lots in Cardiff. The parent (widow) name is incorrect, so I doubt this one is yours.

The IGI could be yours, it is either the Census birth year given is incorrect, or they did have a son named David Jones c.1827 who died and they named a later son the same name, which would explain the parents names matching with the entry ~ this did happen quite a lot,
[I had 3 Catherine Elizabeth Millers, 2 George Millers and a Pritchard and a Richard Miller !]
Just a thought.
Also found this on the 1861 Census, this is probably a match to the other David Jones (with the widowed mother above):

Hope this helps!

Wow! thanks Jen for all the information and for replying so quickly.
The first 1841 match looks right, even if my IGI match is incorrect (though David does seem to be ageing at a lower rate than the rest of his family - born on 29th Feb perhaps? ::) )
Thanks again

Hi Jen
Can you look up on 1841, 1861 & 1871 census -
Surname Cowles, William (birthplace Mathern , Monmouthshire (1805 or 1806)
his wife Florence Cowles (not sure on maiden name) born around 1805/6 birthplace USK.
Also can you give me any advice as I'm relatively new to family research. The above named had a son- John Milner Jenkins Cowles born 1850 Cardiff Glamorgan - was it usual or was there any special reason for people then to give their child what appear to be surnames (Milner Jenkins) for the middle names? I think there was a brother to John, Wiliam Hercules Jenkins Cowles as well- unless it was meant to be a double barrelled name it seems very unusual?

Hello Bel, hope you have had a nice Easter holiday. I do not have access to the 1871 Census however I have the 1841/51 & 61 and uk 1881.
I searched the 1841 disk but no luck, even looked under variants such as Coles etc. There was a N Cowles but the birth year was way out.
Same with the 1861 ~ no entries listed for the name at all.
With 1851 we have a hit! ;)
Here are all the entries:
2461 531 013 LLAMPHA COW JOHN VR U 27 SCT -

COWLES JOHN M.J. SO - 1 -
GLA CARDIFF (c1850)
REGAN CATHERINE SV U 16 HOUSE SERVANT
IRL - (c1835)
It could be they moved between 1851 & 1861, or they are enumerated under the wrong spelling that I have not searched for.
With regards to the unusual names, people I have found in my research named their children after a family member (Grandfather of either Maternal or Paternal family, or a brother etc) sometimes after a deceased family member e.g: child in the family.
The names do seem unusual, Milner Jenkins, could be after the Mothers family (maternal and Paternal names) keep all the names in mind when researching, sometimes things you find initally will fit in nicely much later on. I say this especially as you are unaware as to Florence Cowles maiden name at the moment.
Give me a few days (the children are home from school so I have been a little short of time for undisturbed access to the internet!!!!) I will see if I can help you...no promises but you never know I may turn up something for you.
If you have any other information which you think may help let me know.
I will post here to let you know either way.
Take care & happy researching
You have picked a very addictive hobby! ;D
Kindest Regards Jen :D

Thanks Jen- you are very helpful indeed and I do appreciate it!
I have opted for what I thought would be the easy route and so far it has been relatively smooth (until John Cowles)
I have been going back directly through the male paternal line father-grandfather-greatgrandfather etc. I won't divert from that course until I have gone as far as I can with paternal line.
I found John Cowles on 1901 census living with his wife Bessie, Children then in the London area. Not sure why they moved from Wales to London. Odd thing is we were always told that our grandmother's roots were in Wales, not grandfather's so it pays to not rely wholly on these sources for accuracy. Anyway- John Cowles & Bessie Cowles - & children (present on 1901 at least)Frederick John (my great grandfather) May, Maud, Blanche. Gertrude (one of their children)who appeared on an earlier census is not listed later. Found an index for death of child bearing same name & correct as to area of residence then.
As for going back with John Cowles as my next source - I know have the info you kindly provided which backs up with other info gathered 1881 census on latter day saints is where I first found John Milner Jenkins brother William Hercules. I have logged onto familyhistory online as well today and found 1851 info on there. William the brother no longer appears..
The trail leads on..

Dear Welsh Jen,
I am seeking information about my Grandfather's family. He was David Richard Daniel Lloyd, b. 30 Mar. 1905, Edmunton.
His parents were David Lloyd b. 1871, Aberdare and Louisa Currier. Daniel and Emma also had 2 dau. Emma Louise and Elizabeth.
I know that David had at least one sibling, a brother named Daniel. Both men worked for the railroad. Daniel was seriously injured on the train and retired to Compton Martin near Bristol.
I believe David's grandparents to be Daniel Lloyd, b. 1839 Bredon, Worcester and Emma (possibly Evans) b. 1838 Cardiff. Daniel worked for the railroad. They had 6 children, Richard (also worked for the railroad) b. Cardiff, Maria b. Pontypool, George b. Aberdare, David b. 1871 Aberdare, Rose Ann b. Aberdare, and Daniel. b. 1875 Aberdare.
Any information I can find that might connect my great grandfather David to these other Lloyds or prove no connection would be appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you Jen for your help. I am thinking the only way to prove that the Daniel and Emma listed on the 1881 Census are my great great grands would be to get a birth certificate for either my great grandfather David, or his brother Daniel, and find their parent's names listed there.
Can you give me any tips as to how to obtain a birth certificate? This would be a request made from the US, so there will have to be money changing involved. Thanks!
I am intrigued by the wedding of David Lloyd and Ann Gwyn in 1836. That would make them the right generation to be parents to Daniel, b. 1839. However I am quick;y learning that Lloyd is a most common Welsh name. Although David, Daniel and Richard are recurring names in my family they still aren't names exclusive to us. There seem to be rather a lot of them just in Aberdare.
I would like to follow up with the connection my family has to the railroad. I know my great grandfather and his brother both worked for the railroad. Can you advise me as to which railway I would need to contact in Aberdare? Because Daniel's work related accident was so severe, I am hoping there would be records of it, even if I can't find ordinary employment records.
Thank you again for your help. Hope your Easter hols went smoothly and things are quiet again on your homefront.

Hello Maureen I agree this may be the only way of finding out the link for sure.
If you have PDF on your PC you may Guide 3.pdf of interest to you to find this click:

You can also purchase the certificates that you wish from
http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/ however you have to find the entry you want via the site and that is also at a cost.
I hope this helps you.
Things settling down now after the Easter break. The children are back in school but my 3 yr old still refuses to sleep even one night!
Take care

DEAR JEN
I am looking for a Barbara Morgan in 1871. I have found her in 1881 living at Llandough Village. She was then a widow aged 67 so she was born about 1814...birthplace Cowbridge. I have found her in 1891 and 1901 when she was the grand old age of 86!! If you could locate her in 71 61 etc I would be really grateful.
I am also looking for James Morgan, her son, in 1871. He would have been about 18 and I think still living with his mother.
What i really need to know is the children she had apart from James and the name of her husband.
Sorry about the length of reply.
many thanks

Dear Jen
Many thanks for the info. which was really helpful and filled in a lot of gaps. What I cant understand is where they were in 1871...I cant find them anywhere. Do you have any suggestions?
Judith
-
Dear Judith,
Going by all the Census information and the 1881 (as below) the family do not seem to have moved around much. I would assume (wrongly or rightly!) that they are present in the Llandough region in 1871. It is just a matter of finding them in the census. Which is not easy as it is not indexed like the others. You would need to know the street they were living in. Perhaps some nice person on here would do a look up for you in the area? The census addresses for your Morgan's are pretty ambiguous!

Dear Jen,
Now that you've found a marriage for David Lloyd and Ann Gwyn, 4th April 1836, Aberdare, in the Glamorgan Marriage Index 1569-1837, could I impose further and ask if you would try to locate them in the 1841/51/61 Census' for me?
They were married just 3 years before the birth of the man I believe to be my great great grandfather, Daniel Lloyd (b. Bredon 1839) and I would love to find out if they show up on a census with children, specifically with Daniel as their son.
Thank you for your efforts on my behalf.
Regards,
Maureen

hello again,
i have searched for the family in the 1841 Census, but there is no match to the names. The only match to the name (and Bredon) is the Lloyd's that I listed previously, so there is no match to your family in 1861 either.
I will have a better look in the morning
If I find any more out I will post my findings here.
Take care Jen :)

If you find any Moseley, Mosely , Mosley in the GLA 1841 census I would be pleased to hear about them. There is no urgency about this, it is only if you find any in the course of your lookups for others.

Hello Jen,
Many thanks for all your hard work. I will study these names and check them against my other information. I may have a querry but I will check first.
With kind regards,
Ian.
-
Would appreciate your checking to see if you can locate this elusive family of mine pls. Sorry for the paucity of information and I realise there are billions of David THOMAS' working as miners!
1861
David THOMAS (?) miner
Elizabeth THOMAS (?)
Hannah THOMAS (10) (b July 1851) Hirwaun, Aberdare*
Margaret THOMAS (8) (b 1853) Hirwaun, Aberdare
*Hannah's birth certificate says her mother (Elizabeth) was the informant and her address was Hirwaun, Aberdare in the registration district of Merthyr Tydfil, counties of Glam and Brecon.
1851
I suppose its possible that David and Elizabeth THOMAS might be married and living in Hirwaun/Aberdare but without children?
Many thanks

Jen
Thanks for responding so quickly re my THOMAS lot. Is it likely that they might be in the Brecon census rather than the Glamorgan one as Hannah's b/c mentions both counties?
Kind regards
EJ

You should post in the Breconshire look up section also.
I have a good link for you here with relation to where to look for your Thomas' I hope this answers your question as to where to search for records.
