The occupation of shoemaker might indicate Peter had been invalided out of the army, though his record shows he served his full 21 years to obtain his pension. However soldiers who had been injured were often retrained as shoemakers since it was an occupation that could be done sitting down. perter's army record would show whether he had been injured.

Trevor,
I donīt know if this fits with your Gunns at all, but the connection is the Woolwich area of Kent.
My Great Grandmothes Elenoror(Ellen) Sophie Wills married for a second time after my Great Grandfathers death. She married a Thomas Howard Gunn at Holy Trinity Church New Charlton,on the 28th July 1901.
He was a widower aged 41 with 2 Children Florence Isabella and Walter. They had previously been living in Plumstead.
Any Help?

Thomas Howard Gunn according to the 1891 and 1901 censuses was born circa 1858 in Plumstead.
The 1891 census gives him three children including a daughter Ethel M. aged 6
Thomas appears on the 1881 census in Plumstead with his parents Charles Gunn born Edmonton circa 1822 and Maria born circa 1823 in Highgate and his two siblings.
The 1901 census gives 124 Gunns who were born in Kent (4,300 in all), so far from a rare surname.
