Grundy Chadwick is possibly my ancestor. Unfortunately he died in 1847 aged 52 (a shoemaker.) Can someone please do a look up for him in 1841. His death certificate shows him to have been living at 1 Court Scholes Street registered at London Road Manchester. In 1812 he was married to Hannah. The informant of death was Mary Chadwick who could have been his daughter, his daughter in law or his second wife so I am no closer in linking his probable son James to him. Grundy probably came from Ringley, Farnworth or possibly even Bury.
I would be very grateful for help with Grundy. It is such an unusual forename I thought it would be easier.

Hi Val
afraid no Grundy Chadwick or variants are listed on the 1841 name index for Lancashire. I also tried a wildcard search for all forenames beginning with Gra* Gre* Gri* etc.
Is it possible that Grundy was a nickname or a mistranscription?
May be worth posting a lookup for Mary in the area on the 1851. This would tell you age, marriage status etc (if you can find her!) and may give you some clues.

Thanks for looking, Sue. He is named Grundy on the IGI for his birth and marriage and also I have his death certificate so I am pretty sure it's the right name. I know from the IGI that he had a daughter, named Mary Chadwick. I have found his daughter in law Mary Chadwick with Grundy's son (hopefully) James living at 251 Bengall Street Manchester in 1851. I wonder if you can see if they were on the Index for 1841. James Chadwick was born c1817 in Bolton, Mary also c1817 in Bolton children would be John (1837) and James (1839) both born in Bolton. subsequent children were born in Manchester after 1841 James was an Engineer
I really am grateful for your interest

Hi Val
here you go from the 1841 name index - afraid this is as much info as it gives!
Manchester, Manchester - HO107/0571/6/~F5
Chadwick James 25
Chadwick Mary 25
Chadwick Jonathan 6
Chadwick James 2
may be worth posting for a lookup saying the reference is known?

Thanks again Sue. John is never Jonathan again on any of the subsequent censuses so that is a surprise. Also the age is more likely to be correct when he is only 6 (maybe) so the information you give me certainly gives me food for thought. I will do a new posting to see if I can get an address using the reference you kindly provided - and perhaps find Grundy nearby.
